We go to the Leota trails all the time. The lower portion of the trail is pretty sandy, but doable. If you take the furthest north loop, it's pretty fun. My family has been riding there for years. There is a motel across the street from the Loeta mall. There is plenty of camping spots along the Muskegon river. However, the only shower you are going to get is grabbing a bucket of water from the river and dousing your self with it. And, it is COLD!. But, a highly recommended area for camping and riding. There aren't any camp grounds around there, that I know of.
