DR 250 how do i set float height? no caliper

so i didnt have anything but a tape measure.. and it would fit safely in the bowl so i went back to some basic math and measured the float. then measured the top that was above the carb body... and then subtracted the above part from the total float... this gave me a total near and a bit above 1/2 inch thats what they said it should be in the clymers service manual i guess you can use a tape measure too;)

Language i dont really understand enough to try it: Clymer manual---- Hold the carburetor so the float arm is just touching the float needle measure the distance from the carburetor body to the float. i dont understand what they mean by float arm is that the moving arm or the stationary one? when they say measure from the carb body to the float what part of th carb body and what part of the float do i measure between? thanks Aaron aka chaos72

  6. but im a newbie to Thumper Talk and motorcyle repair. i just replaced the float valve and O rings and the float assembly and O rings.. (float bowl gasket too) i didnt set the height because i dotn have a vernicular caliper or a metric ruler.. but i can measure .53 - .61 inches. the problem is that i dont understand the Clymer language so i was hoping someone could explain: here i the text from my 1990-94 Dr250-350 suzuki repair manual "Hold the carburetor so the float arm is just touching the float needle---- not pushing it down. Use a float level gauge, vernicular caliper or a small ruler and measure the distance from the carburetor body to the float. The correct height is listed in table 1. Table 1 (DR250S) Float height: 13.6-15.6 mm 0.53-0.61 inches if anyone can explain how to do it without a ruler, i could put my carb back on the bike and ride soon the old float was set with the tab bent closer to the float than the new one is the manufacturer producing the parts preset for my bike? Or do i set it?? thx for your help, AAron aka Chaos72

    carb prob- overflow -Dr250 s

thx for the advice Yater, Mudshark and BCRider.. i see now the needle valve is float and throttle valve is the other one... im goin straight to my bro's shop to clean the needle valve of any debris... i think we sprayed enough carb clean but i didnt try to clean it again.. what are my risks to the bike if i ride it with this problem... i wont ride much (no license) but its very rural.. so 5 miles to the store on untravelled roads.. very tempting ( i have a learner permit) but without my friends i cant resist sometimes:D thx again -- chaos

    carb prob- overflow -Dr250 s

hey thx Mudshark, i just ordered the float valve assy... is that the same valve or are you talkin bout the the one with the long needle? im a newbie to the mechanical side of motorcycles and im just learning to ride since being off bikes for 20 years i mostly hungout with friends and goofed off on their bikes.. i had 2 friends help me remove the carb and clean it the float assy is plastic and cant be adjusted.. we had a similar problem on a 1987 yam TT 350 but it had a float you could adjust. it sounds like im on the right track with the float valve assy. im replacing all the plastic parts in the float bowl and the rubber o-rings too. but we havent inspected the other needle , i forget what you call it... ok i found my schem... its a jet valve.. but we never looked in the carb that far (only removed it and checked the bowl out) thanks alot for your help Aaron aka chaos hey have you heard of a court game called washers? i got my nick from the washers court and also my philosophy about music, (theory exsists in your mind.. any repetition of notes can make a scale or chord or progression... even some crickets and frogs or the sounds of traffic) in washers i play with the knowladge that the washer gods rule the court and skill is only part of the formula used to win:D blah blah blah --chaos
