    Is it possible to get bowl off without removing carb?

    You bet you can. Pull it once to replace the stock phillips head screws with allen head screws. Then, all you have to do to pull the bowl on the bike is losen the carb mounts and rotate it a bit. I also unbolt the rectifier too just for a little more "hand" room. I use a 1/4" allen socket with a flexiable extension to get to the four screws. Once you figure out the right combination of tools to use, it easy. Takes me about 5 minutes to swap out main jets. WGW

    Sssshhhh! Reasons for quiet exhaust?

    Saw a shirt one time that said "If loud pipes save lives, imagine what some training would do." I personally chose the stock pipe. I don't like the noise. I put a Yosh on my previous DRZ, but I'm happy with the stock pipe on this one. So I lose a little performance and add a few pounds, big whoop. I just think it is pretty disrespectful to others around you when you are blasting away. Loud pipes also contribute to road rage at times. I certainly don't want to be stuck behind some loud vehicle belching out noise pollution and I'm sure I'm not alone. I would never take action againts a fellow motorist that chooses to be an attention whore, not my style. But I'm sure that it happens. That goes for cars, trucks, or bikes. It's really unfortunate that folks just don't think about others any more. Self centered-ness and self serving has become the norm. Really sad when you think about it. Well, right or wrong, those are my reasons for running a quite exhaust. I guess to sum it up, mainly out of respect for those that are around me in traffic or happen to live or have businesses on the roads I ride. WGW

    Oversized Grips

    Grip puppies. Google it. They are foam and fit over your existing grips. Makes em nice and fat with a good bit of cushion. I think they are around $20. WGW

    My SM Mods so far

    Not yet. I wasn't planning on doing anything really amazing. Probably just buy a chunk of delrin and sand down a block in the shape of the kick stand base. Drill a couple of small holes in the stand and all the way though the block. Then run a machine screw through and counter sink a locking nut or epoxy a counter sunk t-nut in the bottom. WGW

    How do you change/repair a tire on the road?

  8. Sorry for the late reply. The alarm worked great for awhile, but it's not real reliable. It would just start sounding for no reason. I wound up taking the batteries out and use it just as a disc lock now. It's the XN-14. MInes about 5 years old now so I can comment on the new models. Maybe the alarm is more reliable now. WGW

    My SM Mods so far

    The heated gear work great. I used variable controllers on both the grips and jacket. As long as I don't crank them both full blast, the DRZ has enough left over juice at highway speeds to keep things comfortable. I haven't had a chance to try the roll chart holder yet. Hopfully this spring/summer I'll load up the Oklahoma section of the TAT and give it a whirl. Only thing that I think I'll change is I may figure out some way to bolt on a block to the bottom of the SM kick stand. That will eliminate the need to swap the stand out with each wheel set change. Just bolt/unbolt the block and go. I've added a pretty extensive tool and tire repair kit to my collection. The only SM sprockets I've ran were the stock 41 tooth and the 38 tooth. In fact, the 38 tooth was leaving my chain pretty loose, so I went ahead and cut two more links out of the stock chain, leaving me with 108 links vs 110 stock. I just can't see going back to 41 tooth in SM mode. As far as your seat goes, I'd be tempted to buy another DRZ seat, disassemble it and use the foam and seat pan to extend your existing seat. Of course you would have to fab up some bump stops and get some fabric to recover, but I would think it would be fairly easy to do. I recovered one of my seats once and it was very easy to do. The key is using an air stapler that can staple into the plastic. Your bike looks great. Lots of creature comforts. I'll bet the kids have a blast riding with you. What does the antenna go to? WGW

    Music on the go..

    You didn't say what your budget is, but if you don't mind spending some money, J & M Motorcycle Audio has some great quality systems. I have thier Nolan N102 helmet with integrated headset and bluetooth. The bluetooth streams full stereo audio from my iPod and works like a champ. With volume controls on the helmet, it's easy to lower the volume when situations warrant. You don't have to deal with putting in earbuds nor the painfull hot spots you get when they are pressing on your ears. The speakers are mounted in the helmet. Nothing is touching or in your ears. I don't think they sell the N102 anymore but they have the N103. It lists for $730 on thier site. That includes the helmet, headset (mounted in helmet) and bluetooth unit (mounted on helmet). I'm a music junkie and if I'm awake, I typically have tunes going. The rumble of exhaust just doesn't do it for me. The nice thing about this setup is that it is totally mobile. It all goes with the helmet. So if you ride multiple bikes, just strap on your helmet and you have your audio system ready to go. WGW

    Using clutch while standing

    If you are tall, you might consider some bar risers if you don't already have any. They made a huge difference for me. Here's a before and after picture (look at how much higher the bars stick from the front plate): The risers installed: My drz bars are now at the same heigth as my RM250 bars.     What are the leading causes of stator failure?

    So does this mean it would actually be better on the stator if we consumed this extra power elsewhere? For example: would running heated gear while at highway speeds actually better on the stator since the extra power isn't getting dumped into the stator windings? Thanks, WGW

    Thanks Noble. I for sure want to be able to break down the SM tires on the road. I will certainly give it a try again. I think I just gave up to quickly last time. Steve - it's a Cruz Tools axle hex adapter. Part number AH1922. It appears to have been discontinued and replaced with AH1922B. I got it at Dennis Kirk for $9.99. 19mm on one side and 22mm on the other.

    Yeah, I tend to go to the extreme. I will probably take one or two tire spoons out. The slime I bought is made for tubed tires. Not sure what the difference in formula is. I'll have to practice some more on breaking the beads by hand when I do my next SM tire change. I just couldn't do it last time without the leverage of my tire changing machine. So the slime will have to be my emergency repair until I can get the technique down for braking the SM beads. I forgot to mention tubes. I'll carry them in my front fender bag. The hammer is useful for straightening bent parts, removing the master link clip, etc. I have the stock sparkplug wrench. Keep in mind, this is my kit for big rides. I'll use this for multiple bikes so alot of the tools will see use elsewhere. It's a grab and go kit so I don't have to think about which tools I need to bring. Also, sometimes I ride alone and sometimes I have a buddy. His bike may take tools that mine doesn't so having a good selection can prove very useful.     Well, here's what I came up with... Everything fits in the OEM Suzuki rack bag. With all the tools it weighs just under 16 pounds. Two bags, two tool rolls, and two bottles of Slime: Tool roll 1 contains my tire levers and the long part of the enduro star: I won't need to carry this roll when in SM mode because I won't be able to break down the tires anyway. So, I'll just need the slime and compressor bag. Tool roll 2 is the meat and potatos of the kit. Wrenches, 1/4" sockets, ratchets and extensions. The wrenchs on top fit in the zippered pouch on the right hand side. Green bag contains pliers, screwdrivers, baby hammer, and plastic boxes with misc small tools and parts: Plastic box 1 contains, allen sockets, small screw driver, right angle screw driver (for jet change), small cut off allen wrench (for float bowl), axle holder, 3/8 to 1/4" adapter, and rest of enduro star parts. Plastic box 2 contains spare parts. Master links, fuses, tube nut, and fork air release plugs (only carrying these because I put on some new release valves and want to make sure they work). The blue bag contains my air up supplies. Compressor, skabs (tire patches), and core removal tool. I still have some room and plan on adding a spare spark plug, JB weld, wire, electrical tape, flashlight, silicone tape, some fuel line, my spare jets, spare valve core, shop towels and a lighter. WGW
