    xt550 rebuild

Assuming the shocks are OK adding a spacer is going to stiffen up them up for sure. They wont work so well because the travel will be reduced to. The added pressure required to get them to move in the first place (sticktion) means small bumps will not be smoothed out. But its fun to try this stuff. Good Luck

    xt600 Oil Change...

Yep the motor drain is on the gear lever side, take the bash plate off to prevent any oil running onto it. This should be done with the bike at normal operating temp, ten minuets riding should do this. Drain the oil out of the motor for at least 10 min. There is another drain at the bottom of the oil tank which is on the gear lever side of the bike below the pillion seat. Remove the dip stick before draining the tank (watch out for hot oil!) On the break side of the bike, drain the oil from the filter housing by removing the bottom screw. Remove the other two screws and change the filter, check all the seals are in good nik before reassembly. There is a strainer in the lower oil line from the oil tank that should also be cleaned by removing the line from the tank pulling out the strainer and cleaning it. I had the alterator cover off my bike the other day and took the time to wipe the magnets on the flywheel. There was a lot of metal stuck to it, not too surprising for a bike that has been 93000 kilometers. Good luck & tell me how you get on Ian
  3. I have a stator (alternator) coil from a XT600 that I would like to install on to my TT for more lighting power. The reading of the wires that run the cdi (brown and red) are 113 ohms on the tt stator and 230 ohms on the xt stator. Will this cause an over voltage that will fry my cdi? Has anybody done this convertion and got it going? Thanks in anticipation Ian

    TTR225 Stator

The stator is the correct name for the bit that stays still while the magnet(fly wheel) spins around it. Get it? stator=stationary.........moving right along. The magnets in the flywheel and the stator windings together make the alternator, the out put from this will be alternating current hence the name "alterator" If your one is dieing something else in the electrical system is killing it, go find it before trashing another stator. rewinds are a good idea as they are often cheaper and more robust than the factory ones. Thumper Talk runs and after market .....market(eshop thingy) go hunt on there. Some oil around the windings will do no harm as oil is an insulator. unless that whole your talking about is the neutral gear indicator switch that has been mashed off and is causing a short circuit that is overloadind your stator and killing it. Good luck So end basic electrics 101

    xt600 Oil Change...

Have the same model myself, Got it a few weeks ago, If you remove the bash plate (sump plate) there is an external oil line on the gear lever side held in by two allen bolts. Remove them and I'm picking oil will pour out. That would be my first advice. But be warned, I'm guessing. I will go and raid the local library tomorrow as I have to find out myself. If your in a hurry try the Allen bolts, If not Ill try to post stuff from the service manual tomorrow. Cheers Ian
