  2. I haven't been studying any of the newer 2 stroke bikes for years now. I was just wondering if there are any that could be made into a dual sport without a lot of work? Adequate electric's for a headlight, a wide ratio transmission, and durability are a few desirability's that come to mind. What else am I missing?
  3. Thanks, but just curious, why would I need to jet for high altitude? Would it not work, to an extent, in reverse? In your words, "go leaner as I go up". I've been told the airbox snorkel is somewhat restrictive even on stock DR's and opening it up with out rejetting, will make the slightly lean running, stock bike even leaner. Seeing's how, at high altitude, I'd need the bike to run even leaner than the stock jetting, wouldn't temporarily de-resrticting the airbox help somewhat?
  4. I know this may be kinda crude but was just wondering and here's my situation; Stock DR 650 with only my ajustable idle mixture screw opened up an extra 1/2 turn. Runs fine here from 500'-5,000'. But I'm going to take it on a trip to where the altitude will vary and go up to 10,000' or so. I can ajust the idle screw which helps the idle. But as you know much over 6,000' and the DR gets kinda weezy for air. Would modifying the airbox to allow an additional "gated" opening that could be slid open for the days I'm say over 5,000 feet help at all? I know rejetting would be best but I really don't want to go through that on the road and in the past have just left it running rich for the days or week at higher altitude. Thanks for any advice!

    2008 KLR650 apparent new features

    I had posted this on another forum and thought it may be of interest here. I talked with a Kawasaki representative recently regarding the new 2008 KLR. He said they are ready now but are holding off for another month or so to allow 2007 inventory to deplete, and at the same time build '08 inventory. He has personaly owned KLR's. But after having ridden it, said the 2008 one is *really* nice! It has 20% more power which is quite noticable. The motor from the cylinder up is all new. Brakes are much improved. (That wouldn't be difficult!) The suspension feels a lot nicer and the lost travel was just sag anyway. The fairing and windscreen manage the air better and is a huge improvement on the highway. The steering has been kept light feeling yet now he didn't get any of the wobble-weave at 85+ speeds that he sometimes got on his older KLR. He said the seat is a big improvement also. When I asked about the "doohicky" he said he didn't know and also has never met anyone that has had one fail. I said "well, now you have!". I feel Kawasaki has improved what really needed upgraded. And, more importantly, kept the fuel capacity, comfort, rear rack, etc. which makes the KLR a great adventure motorcycle. Yeah, an all new wide ratio 6 speed would have been nice but that would have been a big undertaking and cost. As it stands, according to him, the 2008 msrp will be raised $200. That makes it what...$5,499? I think they're going to sell!
  6. 20% More Power On New KLR 650. That's what a Kaw rep at the Cleveland MC Show said. He has owned two of the current KLR650's and just recently ridden the new one. "Substantially improved in every way" was his quote. They will be available "very soon" and were held back from the Shows because of an inventory of the current KLR's which they want to move with out discounts. The new KLR will be $200 more.

    DR650 vs 2008 KLR650

    Your above statement says a lot about what features you value. With that in mind the new KLR may be a better choice for you. I had a 1999 KLR and for my type of riding the 6 gallon tank, rear rack, and decent seat were important. Why I sold it and got a new DR 650 was the KLR's horrible brakes and wimpy suspension, cheap electrical wiring, and a few other things. Overall I like the DR 650 better but I had to buy a IMS tank, rear rack, and Corbin to make it how I wanted it. The new KLR has addressed, to a degree, brakes, stiffer suspension, dohicky (hopefully), electrics and more. I'd have to consider it if I were in the market now. There's always those that say "I wouldn't get a KLR 650, might as well get a VStrom" and those that say "I wouldn't get a DR650, might as well get a DR400".

    Corbin seat?

    These pictures are of a "IMS tank version" Corbin on my bike. I ordered it to be made 1/2" taller (thicker). This is because Corbin typically makes their seats an inch or so lower than stock ,and I didn't want to lose too much room for my bad knees. The width at where I sit is 11 1/2". I really like this seat. Rick

    That's good. Certainly the parts will be as good. The Thai workmanship seems to be pretty good now and the locally sourced pieces have likely been de-bugged by now. The KLR is pretty simple as far as motorcycles go. OK, but if I had *choice* I'd prefer one made in Japan. This being said it weren't Japanese engineers the ones that designed the doohicky ? I'm looking forward to the reviews on the new KLR. I'm impressed as much with what they left alone as with what they've improved.

    Stock dr-650?

    Unless you ride at high elevations I'd back out the idle mixture screw about 1/2 turn. That's what I did to mine and it runs great, doesn't backfire or pop, gets 50 mpg minimum, and it is quiet. Of course I through money at it in other areas to make it my "GS on a bugit" adventure bike. These include 4.9 gal tank, Corbin seat, rear rack and skid plate, Moose chain rollers, stiffer springs F&R, small DRZ 400 tail light, and Dirt Bagz luggage. I love this motorcycle! Rick

    In 1999 I bought a new KLR 650. I liked the 6 gallon tank, rear rack, and small fairing. It rode like a tall street bike and was more powerful than my previous bike, a Honda XR650L on the road. Did pretty well off road but the suspension was a little wimpy and the engine characteristic didn't lend itself to lugging like the XR650L. The "doohicky" upgrade is a must. When I replaced mine at 12K it was already broken off inside the engine. The KLR seat is OK, the best of the three. I ended up with a Corbin though. The brakes are simply horrible. and the frame is pretty flexy. Plus the new KLR's are made in Thailand and some are convinced the quality has suffered. I now have a 2006 DR650. It seems to be (for me) the ideal compromise between the KLR and XRL. It's 10 year old design is the newest of the three. The handling, brakes, and engine are my favorite of the three. The wiring is higher quality than the KLR and the maintenance is easier. To outfit it the way I wanted, I spent an additional $1,100 adding heavier springs F&R, IMS tank with Pingel petcock, Corbin, rear rack, and skid plate. Added to the $4,500 purchase price makes it $5,600. Of course you may not want or need these modifications. For an even comparison the KLR needs a real skidplate to replace the plastic stocker, heavier springs, a Corbin, and the Doohicky replaced. That puts you about $5,200. Then your left with the flexy frame and the small single piston front brake that is pretty sad. One last observation, the DR just feels and sounds to be of higher quality than the KLR.     DR 650 Loud engine--is this normal noise????

    I guess it's hard to tell but I feel my stock DR650 is similar to my previous bike, a stock, 1999 KLR 650. The KLR engine emitted more rattling noises whick I attributed to the chain driven counterbalancer. Then there was the "tweety bird" exhaust chirp which sounded like an old VW Beetle. The DR to me sounds more like quality. Both make a little valve noise. The skid plate was mentioned as a "noise reflector" and I've noticed that too. My friends DR has a larger aftermarket plate and I can notice his being a little louder than mine with it's smaller, stock plate.

    Loud and proud!

    Loud pipes are irritating to many riders, including me, and almost all non-riders. HD's are the worst offenders and there are more of them but dirt bikes contribute their fair share too. Some of the nicest places to ride a dual sport are also places where others *really* don't want to hear us. Parks, campgrounds, National Forests, logging trails through private land to name just a few. Their is already a serious movement to close and keep closed areas to MCs and quads. Noise is always one of the top reasons. A friend and I were riding this spring. One evening I pulled up to our motel room. A lady was sitting out reading in front of her room beside ours. She made a point to approach me and thank us for our quiet motorcycles. She asked my why so many motorcycles are so disturbingly loud? I said I know of two reasons. #1 is making them loud, by opening them up and doing a number of other minor mods, can free up a few horsepower, maybe 5-10%. She said "so we have to listen all the noise just so they can have more power, what's the other reason?" #2 is many simply want their bike to sound loud even if it runs worse. And many just want others to notice them. The loud HD "look at bad ass me" type. She said it sounded immature to her. I couldn't argue with her. It doesn't matter what the reason... noise annoys. Maybe a *slightly* louder than stock muffler will go unnoticed but anything louder is hurting our sport in a big way. Is that what you want? What sucks is the pendulum will swing and the upcoming noise regulations will be overly restrictive. They will make the stock mufflers even more restrictive and enforce that they not be changed or altered. The point of my post? Please guys, keep them stock or as quiet as possible. rick
