I got back into motorcycling about 8 years ago. During that time I have everything from a 883 Sportster to a new Goldwing. I recently moved to area that has a lot of dirt roads and trials close by and I am going back to a Dual Sport. I am 54 years old, 5' 10", about a 28" inseam and 240 pounds. But I am going to lose at least 40 pounds this year and my ultimate goal is to be at least 180.
I am looking for a nice bike that I can ride to work and hit the trials on the weekends. I am not looking for a motocross bike, but I may hit some small jumps from time to time. Power is not my main concern, but just plain fun is. I have ruled out the DRZ400S and all the 650s (too heavy and/or too tall). The Honda 230L doesn't do it for me and the WR250R is a nice bike, but too tall. I have narrowed it down to the 2008 XT250 or the 2009 KLX250S. I have $500.00 down on the next green KLX250S to come in the next 2 weeks. But this dealer also sells Yamaha. I went in to buy the XT250, but went with the Kawasaki because of the suspension. Maybe I am wrong, but the suspension seems to be better on the KLX250S.
But the XT250 just seems to be calling me. At this dealer it is about $800 less, bigger fuel tank and being air-cooled...simplier. Price is number 2 on my list, but the BIG thing is that it is so comfortable and it fits me. I would have to probably lower the KLX250S and change the seat. Everybody loves the XT225 and it seems like what I have read is that everybody loves the XT250.
I have 2 questions: 1. Has anybody ridden both the XT and the KLX and was there a difference in power? 2. Can the rear suspension on the XT be modified for someone bigger than 180#s?
Sorry about my first post being so long.
