    1992 WR200R project

    I bought this bike for my youngest daughter a couple of months ago for $600. KTM makes some great bikes that fit the criteria but price was a concern and nobody sells a 200EXC cheap so I stumbled on this in our local Craigslist. It was a bit of a beater, needed all the typical love of a barn find, but was pretty much complete, stock and unmolested. She was disappointed in the weight of the DRZ-250 she had been using for the last couple of years so I was trying to find a bike that included a full size chassis, light weight, good low-end power, easy maintenance, common tire sizes with the rest of the bikes in the fleet, and it had to be a two stroke. This was the bike just after getting it cleaned up and running. This was her on the first day trip to try it out. After that first ride she really liked it, and I have to admit that it was a lot of fun to ride. It had a few flaws but nothing serious so it was torn down to the frame, re-powder coated, cleaned with a toothbrush, a couple of new plastic pieces (still available new from Yamaha) were included and a buddy at Dirt Digits made a replica graphics kit. Another friend at Simi Valley Cycles donated a complete front end from a 2004 WR450F with an Applied top clamp and oversized bars. I think it looks great! Can't wait to go play on it this weekend... I mean get the daughter on it!!! A couple of other upgrades include an FMF pipe and Power Core Silencer, Boysen reeds, and YZ footpegs (wider). Just love bringing good old bikes back to life. Next I want to upgrade the odometer to a Trailtech or similar, install a CR style front brake line, and find a decent shock to match the front end.

    TM 125 Levers.

    I have an 01 125E. Great bike and way fast even compared to the brand new bikes. I also have a set of Moose hand Gaurds and they really saved the whole bars, Master Cylinders and levers when I exchanged bikes for the ride back to the truck with a buddy. He went down hard on an old asphalt access road in a local off-road riding area. The bike cartwheeled, flipped, slid on both sides, and then finally came back and landed on him. Still rode it back to the truck. Total damage: scratched front fender, minor bent bars, left side number plate cracked by the lower mounting screw, and heavily abraded hand guards. ALL LEVERS IN FULL WORKING ORDER... like prior post said, best $60-80 bucks spent. On my bike, the clutch cylinder is a Grimeca and the brake is a Brembo.

    Save your money and buy a good, used, NAME BRAND bike. After you have spent your time learning to ride and are ready to step up to a newer and better bike, you will definately be happy that you did when you go to resell it. Good luck and happy riding!

    One last question... Does anyone know if the AMA has totally banned the bike from competition or just Pro Supercross and Motocross? I would love to get my hands on one for the GP's out here in So Cal... would be so cool tapped out passed the radar trailer at Ridgecrest!!!

    Yes, the US versions are not going to be street legal... at least initially. I did hear unsubstantiated rumor that in 2007 they will be street legal, boy won't that be fun then!

    Crankshaft mass equals the crank (same), rod (same), and piston (much larger on 525 and at the end of the lever [rod]). This means it weighs even more than the simple difference between their static weights as it is repeatedly accelerated at the end of the same travel. Hence the reason that a big bore (for the same stroke) feels slower to respond because the gyroscopic force is stronger.

    2001 TM 125 Enduro

    Good Morning, I just bought a 125 enduro Friday night... and I must admit that after two solid nights of staring at the bike, I am super impressed with the way the bike is put together. It really does look like a Ferrari of motorcycles. I have a few questions about the bike though. - Are any of the repair or parts manuals available in english? - Is the plastic unique only to TM or is cheap, disposable plastic available from someone else while my 12yo daughter learns to ride a full-size dirtbike? - Are there any companies that specialize (or even play with) making the 125 an overbore (160 to 200) for the lightwieght GP class? and since I have yet to pull the head is it an iron or chromed cylinder? - How similar is the 125 engine in the enduro to the Kart engine? Will pistons, clutch kits, gasket sets, etc... interchange? - Besides TM itself, is there a good aftermarket sourse for pistons, gaskets, clutches, graphics/seat covers, etc? - Any reliability or common wear items on the 125 that I should monitor? Thank you all in advance. I look forward to riding and racing the wheels off this thing and getting to know more about this truely beautiful bike! Thanks, Chris

    First let me say that for the record, I am a serious KTM fan.. great bikes and with that understand my obvious bias. IMHO, I think the KTM is the better choice with certain provisions... -First I would recommend the 450EXC over the 525 for trails as it is less affected by the crankshaft mass and does steer quicker as a result while losing only a little bit of power. In back to back comparisons while riding anyone of my three buddies WR450s, the two KTMs in the group just walk away when it comes to power. -Both the Yammie and Katoom are great in terms of reliability but with both I would highly recommend using a cush drive for the rear sprocket once you use the bike regularly on the highway. I found my already noisy tranny getting worse on my older 520 once I started using it on the roadway (also found out later that the primary drive nut was backing out / and I attribute that to the added stress of the high levels of traction from rubber on asphalt). -Lastly, the KTM just looks cooler...
