  1. 2006 Husky TE510 Overheating Remedy NEW HOT TECH TIP...Remove TE510 Husky’s Head and Cylinder in the Frame GO TO: www.TreadstoneCycles.com for full story and pictures! I recently had a 2006 Husky TE510 in the shop for an overheating problem. Previously, the owner had discovered that the water pump mount nut was missing and that the water pump impeller was spinning freely – obviously not doing what a water pump does best – pump water! After installing a new water pump mount nut and adding an accessory radiator fan, which would help keep the engine cool in stop-and-go traffic, he thought the overheating problem was resolved. It was time for a shakedown ride. Shortly after leaving the city limits, the bike began to overheat again. Even with the accessory fan operating at full-speed, the engine still overheated. As he tried to ride it home, the motor began to slow down and loose power – it was seizing up! The overheating also caused the radiator coolant to spew from the overflow bottle cap vent hole. It took a couple of hours but he was able to limp the Husky home, stopping at regular intervals to refill the radiator from his Camelback. Once in the shop, I disassembled the engine and found that the head gasket was leaking between the combustion chamber and a cooling system passageway (water jacket). The piston had transferred a very small amount of aluminum, from above the top compression ring, to the cylinder. Guess where I found the lost water pump impeller nut? Inside the top of the right radiator! Also, the water pump bearings were noisy so they were replaced. Using muriatic acid I was able to remove the aluminum piston fragment from the cylinder. I broke the glaze from the cylinder walls with a Scotch-bright pad and soapy water. That way the new rings would break in easier. So, how did I take the head and cylinder off in the frame? Here is the HOT TECH TIP I promised you… According to the Husky service manual, you have to take the engine completely out of the frame to remove the head and cylinder. But you really don’t have to! Insert a plastic-handled screwdriver or plastic spacer to separate the head from the cylinder. Then, remove all four of the head-mounting studs from the case. You can now easily remove the head and cylinder. To reinstall, put the cylinder on first and lightly seat the lower cylinder mount bolt. Install the head gasket and the head. Insert the spacer again and install all four of the case studs. CAUTION: The head gasket is made out of a tough metal material, but during reassembly, you still need to be careful not to damage it. Check out the images for a better idea of what I mean. This procedure saved me a ton of time, which translated to a huge savings in labor costs to the customer. After replacing the head gasket, piston, rings, water pump bearings, engine oil and filter, cleaning and re-oiling the air filter, then filling the radiator with a Treadstone Cylces cocktail mix of 50% Red Line Water Wetter, 25% Peak antifreeze and 25% water, the over heating problem was resolved.     what tires do you recommend?

    I've had excellent all around performance and handling from the Dunlop 952's front and rear. I ride Nevada dessert and trails. The tires seem to hold up well and work in a variety of conditions.

    Transmission Oil Level

    I run a qt. as well. The transmission oil is separate from the engine oil...if the trans level is going down, you either have a leak or a case sealing problem.

    Honda Needle Clarification

    Hey ALL, Just wondering if a NCVS needle is slightly richer than the NCYS...maybe through the mid-range? I've been running the NCYS (#3 clip position) from 0 to 5,000 feet and it seems a little rich in the mid-range. I'm also running a 45 slow jet, 170 main and a 55 leak jet, Twin Air filter, opened air box and a FMF Powercore Exhaust w/ a spark arrestor screen. Thanks for your input.

    Making a CRF 450 X lighter for VET racing

    I have a 06 X that I removed the electric start and E-button, non-necessary wiring, battery, exhaust system (went to FMF titanium slip on Power Core w/spark arrestor screen). Also removed the headlight and wires. I weighed everything I took off on our shipping scales and actually removed very close to 25 lbs. The bike definately handled better with the battery and heavy muffler removed (high weight). Also opened the airbox and rejetted. I didn't have a E-start on my R so I don't really miss it! = >) The X is much better than the R for offroad.

    Installing a Weisco 13:1 Piston - Need Race Gas?

    Thanks for the reply everyone. I'm happy to report the bike's a rocket. Running half race gas - half premium unleaded. The thing's got so much more torque, I'm riding a full gear higher in all situations and I'm having a hard time keeping the front end down. Great mod...would highly recommend! Note: A side benefit - the motor is quieter with the Weisco piston.

    Brand New 450X seriously low on tranny oil

    The easiest way to add oil to your trans is to remove the round inspection plug on the right engine/trans. case. It's the hole where you can see your timing marks. Stand the bike upright and slowly fill with oil through the filler hole until the oil level is at the bottom of the inspection plug opening. You can't go wrong with this method. Note: In the summer, because of the increased temps., one quart won't quite fit and the excess will flow out of the large inspection hole.

    '07 CRF450X waterpump weep hole leaking

    My 03 CRF450R had that problem afer two years of riding. I replaced the water pump internal seals - problem solved. If the lead doesn't stop entirely after about 4 hrs. of riding, replace it. My 06 X has never leaked...it's a year old.
  10. I'm installing a Weisco 13:1 high compression piston in a 05 CRF450X. The bike's air box has been opened, carb rejetted and exhaust modified. The head has been treated to Kibblewhite valves, springs and retainers. Has anyone tried a similar modification? Will I need to run race gas? Thanks in advance for your advice!

    water wetter

    I've used Water Wetter in my CRF450R for two years with no engine problems and no overheating. I ride everything from the Virginia City Grand Prix to Mammoth Mountain MX. The stuff works as good as Engine Ice!
  12. Hi All, I own a 2003 Honda CRF450R. When I bought it new in April of 2003, I got a green sticker. Two years later, I registered it again and got a green sticker. Then, six months later, the DMV sent me a red sticker with a letter saying sorry for the inconvenience, but your bike should have a red sticker, thank you very much. My question is this, does anyone know of a group that is fighting this issue legally or has heard any news about the possibility of the green sticker cut-off including 2003 models in the near future?     Blown tranny??

    Unfortuneately you've joined the club of CRF450R owners who have blown a tranny (not like Hugh Grant). I have a 2003 CRF450R that had 4 hours on it when it locked up in the desert in fifth gear WFO. Honda did step up and fix it at no charge because of the low hours. It just so happened that one of the local pros also experience the same thing a week earlier.
