  1. Just wanted to know some experienced opinions on improving my tired suspension. I have an '85 xr600r. My questions are: 1. Should I have my rear shock rebuilt or buy a Progressive Suspension 420 series shock? 2. Cartridge emulators vs. Progressive Suspension's dampening rods and progressive springs or "straight rate springs"? I ride everything, but mostly ride desert trails at speeds avg. between 25-55mph, not a lot of tight stuff.

  3. Now that I have my bike running great, I wanted to spruce it up with some new Maier plastic, mine look like they are over 20yrs old. Maier lists the side covers for the years 86-87 but Not 85. Does anyone know the difference? Will it still work? I thought 85-87 were pretty interchangeable, but I don't want to blow $86 on an assumption.
  4. Thanks guys. I accidentally scuffed one of my seats when I was polishing the ports, that is why I wanted a valve job. Everything else looks good, so I am just going to have the seats re-done and re-use the valves. In a year or less I want to cam it. Right now I am too school poor to afford hardened rockers/and valve train parts to do the job right. When I do I will buy a fresh set of valves and maybe seats. Or maybe I will get a good job and buy an xr650r :-).
  5. I need some advice. I am putting together my '85 xr6 engine and need to re-seat my valves. i am told that some years you don't want to grind on your valves because you will destroy the hardened coating. Can I get away with grinding my stock valves? If not, what are my options. My machinist has no knowledge on Honda valves, says I should be fine unless they are ti, but his "should be fine" answer was not as reassuring as I would have liked. Any one have a definite answer?
  6. I have an 85 xr6 with dual carbs and have been told that an 88 manifold will do this. I imagine that there might be a similiar coincidence with the 350. The duals were not a bad set up and some argue better than a single. They at least made better top-end with a little less bottom end punch.
  7. I have the first 85xr6 that had dual carbs. It's a neat idea, and they work great. The theory is the same as having secondaries on your four barrel that delay opening up. In this case they would be mechanical secondaries vs. vacuum secondaries like we are used to on (for example) a quadrajet. If they are adjust right, the second carb delays opening so that you have greater velocity through the single carb at partial throttle, but when both open up you have the flow of two carbs vs. one. In my case, two 28mm carbs have more topend potential than one 40mm. The down side is that if you goose it off the line, they do not seem to have as instant punch since both are wide open. You learn to roll the throttle on so you don't "over goose" it. The dual carbs could produce more topend than the singles did. Well, until the next generation of pumpers changed everything.
  8. Gosh, I doubt it and I have looked around a bit. I have a 85 xr6 with 2 dual carbs and have heard that you can use an '88 intake manifold to convert it to a single carb set-up. Seems if you were highly modding your engine it might be worth it so you could use a mikuni pumper. I like the novelty of the Duals, so i haven't confirmed if it's true. Theoretically the dual carbs should be pretty versatile, from low-end grunt to top end flow if you learn not to goose it. Remember that these carbs were not meant to open simultaneously and you can adjust when the second one opens to offer better low end response, so long as they both open up fully.
  9. I have an 85 xr600 that i split the cases on to replace a few gears (go figure) and I thought once I had it apart i would go through the top end. I got all excited about a 628 kit, but it needs to last me a couple more years and I hear mixed thoughts on reliability. So I have decided upon a 98mm wisco w/11:1 comp and a stage 1 hotcam to compliment the increased compression. I l have an unplugged stock exhaust and am wondering if any of you have experience on how much I will need to change the stock jetting or mess with the carb slide-opening-timing. Ideally I would have liked a 10:1 compression, but wiseco seems to be the best for the $$$. So my next question is.... Does anyone have any thoughts on using two cylinder base gaskets to drop the compression ratio? I omitted the base gasket on my old xl500r to increase the compression, so the reverse should also hold true, but I worry about two gaskets squishing to much over time. My gut tells me it's a bad idea, but maybe.....? I know that by using a cam with a longer exhaust duration helps keep cylinder pressure down as opposed to the stock cam, but I still wonder if 11:1 is too high. I ride a lot in 90deg weather with only 91ron available. Trying to retard the cam timing makes me feel queasey and would require buying all the necessary tools. Am I just overthinking all of this as usual. My eyes hurt form trying to find related posts. Thanks.
  10. I am sold on exhaust tape. I have read many great reviews on it, one claiming it dropped his oil temp by 30deg on his xr250. I imagine that it would be more noticable on larger displacements. The heat against your leg is considerably less, so it can't be radiating much back to the motor. As far as performance, you just have to tell yourself it works, otherwise you won't notice the difference. Good theory, though. The only downside is that it will rust out your header a lot faster. I always run my bike after it's washed to hopefully dry it out. But if you have the $$$, I would also ceramic coat your system. They should compliment each other well.
