    expensive lesson

I must admit I'm not a mechanic by far. I know a little about alot of things but mechanics isn't one of them. I took the bike to the KTM shop here in Reno because I know them kind of. They said it would cost $1800+ and take 2 weeks cause of ordering parts. The Honda shop said $1600 and a few days. Heres the major things they did: Replaced main bearings and seals, piston and rings and tranny parts: partial parts list- 2 gasket kits, ring set, piston, countershaft, gear 19t, gear 21t, 4 bearings, 2 clutch( one way), clutch bearing, clutch outer, gear 35t, +more misc bearings and seals etc. $909 in parts and 648 labor.

I've rode for 30+ years and never had or worried about this issue. i went riding with a new rider i met. he had a sick running KTM and I mean sick in a bad way. To boot his skills were not great either. He couldn't make it up a hill so I rode his bike up the hill and told him to ride my 06 crf450x up the hill. he dropped it cracking the clutch cover so slightly i didn't notice it. Thirty miles into the ride he runs out of gas. Now hes riding bitch and we are in 5th gear on a dirt road doing about 50 mph when the back tire fully locks up. Thats what happens when you have no tranny oil. Totally fried my tranny and top end. to add insult to injury, 2 months earlier I had done the top end. I've learned to inspect for leaks and cracks after a drop/ crash and to keep JB weld in your pack. http://www.meetup.com/renodirtriders/

    06 450x valve job

Hey all! I have about 175hrs on my 06 450x. Always kept up with the oil changes and air filters. Up till now have not done anything inside the engine. Recently and suddenly she became very hard to start. The shop adjusted the valves and said it would only last a few rides. Sure enough about 10hrs later shes back to being a bitch to start. I've tried kicking it instead of electric, gas on/ gas off, choke on/ choke off, no throttle/ some throttle. It seems to come down to luck. She still runs great after started but even after warmed up for an hour its questionable if she'll start up again. Does this sound like a valve job is needed? What does this entail and how much should it cost at a dealer? I'm far from a mechanic so input is appreciated. Thanks
