  1. Flat Track Racing Returns to Fallon Photo: http://bbs.off-road.com/ubbthreads/download.php?Number=1524152 2006 Northern Nevada Flat Track TT Championship Series Round 3: Rattlesnake Raceway FALLON, NV, MAY 20 On May 20th the Lahontan Auto Racing Association (LARA) welcomed motorcycle and quad ATV racers back to the Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon, NV for round three of the 2006 Northern Nevada Flat Track TT Championship Series. And boy was it a happy reunion! Since the rainout of the April 22 flat track opener at Rattlesnake, riders young and old from all over N. NV had been very antsy to try out the newly renovated race track. In process since the end of the ’05 stock car season, the LARA, with track builder Harold Lease, has expanded the stock car oval to 1/3 of a mile and raised the banking to 15 degrees. Riders walking the track before practice seemed dwarfed by corners rising to almost 40 feet above the infield. “There’s enough room here at Rattlesnake to have it all,” said Harold, as he pointed out the main features of a newly cut TT course. “Since I race myself, I wanted a course layout that would be fun for skilled riders not just fast bikes. Watch, with all those corners and chicanes down in the infield I think you’ll see a lot more opportunities for the best kind of racing – back and forth passing!” The LARA also used their experience with local dirt to build a great flat track which held up very well for being created from brand new materials. It was probably the first time most riders got a good taste of what it means to race on a truly tacky surface. And you could see the differences in results from the heat races to the main events. Between the huge banked corners, the technical infield and the blue-grooving, the pits were constantly buzzing with bench racing recommendations. From novices to Pros, everybody was having fun doing something to adjust their advantages. Look for updates to the race schedule, and complete series standings at www.nevadaracing.com/thunderbowl. 2. A perfect night for TT racin’ The track design is the same as last year; how should it be made better? Options: 1. Can't. Don't change a thing! Great job! 2. Change the layout a couple times just to keep it fresh. 3. More WATER! This is the desert! 4. Add a 1/3 mile oval event to the series. The pit gates at the Thunder Bowl Speedway in Moundhouse, NV were open early for Round 2 of the 2006 Northern Nevada Flat Track TT Championship Series on May 6, 2006. And though the promoters are now blaming cabin fever for starting the season a bit too early – a blizzard blew out the March 25 opening at Thunder Bowl and Spring showers washed out the April 22 event at Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon NV – over 110 entries were raring to go. As seen in previous seasons the number of kid and quad ATV racers continues to increase – kids are almost 50% of all entries and quad ATVs above 60%. The most competitive kids are the 80-90cc quad ATVs which were split into Novice and Junior classes this year with Trysten Schlepp trading places with Mitchell Menzer for first and second just as they did April 8th in Round 1 at the Centennial Speedway in Hawthorne NV. And as the market trends towards 450cc+ quad ATVs, the 266cc+ 2-Stroke & 450cc+ 4-Stroke Quad classes were double last years size with twice as many entries as the previous years outstanding entries – 400-440cc quads ATVs of the 250cc 2-Stroke & 400cc 4-Stroke Quad classes. In the first lap of the 25+yrs Quad Novice main event Brandy Carmichael of Reno had a hard tumble and on the paramedics advice took a helicopter ride to the hospital ending the event. Track owners Charlie and Carol Brandenberg want everyone to know that after a through check-up and CAT scan her husband, Pro Quad rider Shawn Carmichael, took her home Sunday afternoon with only bumps and bruises. As a consequence of having a helicopter land in the middle of the track to end the Round 2 events, the remaining cancelled main events were awarded series points based on heat race finishes.
