  1. I am running the FMF pipe and really like how it made the power hit lower in the rpm range. I know a lot of guys are running the FMF setup.

    RF4 intake cam failure !!

    caused by a lack of oil. either the oil pressure is low or you got a piece of dirt in the small hole in the head just behind the intake cam.

    Advice needed please

    You should be able to remove the shock with out removing the subframe. I move the mud flap back over the tire and have plenty of room, even with the FMF Megabomb pipe setup. As to the front wheel, make sure your pinch bolts are loose and the forks/alex should align while push down on the forks. Sometimes the right end of the axle is a bit thick. Take a screw drive and tap it in at the pinch bolt area gap to give it more free space. Congrats and welcome to the KTM family.

    Should I trade??

    You'll love the 450SXF. Took me a little bit to get use to it coming off a 250SXF, but now it's my favorite bike. You'll love the magic button!
  5. I have put an '04 250sx motor into in both an '06 and '07 frame. I believe the LC4 motors have different mount locations than the newer RFS motors.

    Avoiding hand cramps

    May seem simple, but maybe your glove is too small. I grabbed the wrong pair of gloves (too small) and it made my right hand cramp up. Was baffled all day riding till I discovered I had the wrong gloves on. Changed gloves and the hand cramping went away.

    First race of the season.. not impressed

    If they drift out (and I am right on them), I just stick to the inside. As soon as I clear their front wheel, then I drift out just a bit to make them have to back of the throttle. If I am back a bit, I'll take the outside and square it off. Then the drag race is on. One of my riding buddies is good for starting inside and drifting out. He makes for good practice. He gets me on some of the jumps, but I have fun with him in the corners. We have a blast at open practices playing this cat & mouse game.

    How Can I Fix This?

    For me at nearly 6'3, moving the bars forward appeared to do more than raising the. I am running an under bar stablizer on my 450SXF and it raised the bars just enough that it doesn't mess with the cornering.

    Hold your line

    The biggest problem I have at an open practice is with the faster A & B riders thinking they are at a race. Even holding my line into a corner, they think they can either come inside further than the inside line or will take an outside in move and damn near take you out. They also try to force a pass when I come on on a slower rider and try to give the slower rider some room as I go around. No matter what your speed or skill level is, some common courtesy has to apply at open practices. The majority of riders out there are there just to ride and enjoy their time on the bike. Not everyone this there practicing for races. Yes everyone should try to hold their line, especially on jumps. But the faster rider should also be looking far enough down the track and notice when they are coming up on a slower rider and be causious. Especially on jumps. Again guys, we are talking about open practices and not races.

    How Can I Fix This?

    If you have the $$$, change out the upper triple clamp for one that has two or 3 positions for the handle bars. Move the bars forward and also use taller bar risers. The Fasstway low boy pegs and the change in the triple clamp will help out a lot. A tall seat foam would also help you out in transitioning from sitting to standing.
  11. I have a KTM 300XC for the woods. Thought it was the primo offroad bike. Till I got a chance to race a KTM 450XC. I was really amazed at how easy it was to ride more aggressively than the 300. I really think a 250F, especially a KTM 250XCF with the e-start, with a big bore kit (300 or 280) would make the ultimate offroad weapon. Light weight, plenty of low end and if geared correctly good top end. It really come down to personal choice.

    You don't want to just dump the clutch out. You want to feather it out to control traction. If your not on a concrete starting pad, get you weight forward and your feet in front of the pegs. That's both feet if your legs are long enough. A Holeshot device helps if you have short legs or use blocks if allowed. On concrete pads, a more neutral position works better. You don't want to light up the rear wheel on the concrete. And unless you have a good tire sponsorship deal, don't worry about burn outs to warm up the tire. As you bring your left foot back to the pegs, catch the shifter with the heel of your boot to grab another gear. Depending on the size of your bike, start in either 1st gear or 2nd. After a lot of practice, you can look at either 2nd or 3rd.

    How to attack corners?

    I had the same problem. I took the old proverb, "you have to go slower to go faster" technique. I started to really concentrate on my body position on the entry into the corner. I use as much front brake as the track conditions allow. If I am locking up my rear brake and hear a lot of rear wheel chatter, I'll apply more front brake the next time. Keeping the ball of my outside foot weighted on the footpeg really makes a big difference on how the bike sticks in the corner. Especially on off cambers. On bermed/rutter corners, (deep ones are my downfall) I noticed that dragging the front brake lightly and not focusing on the rut keeps me from climbing out of the berm/rut. Steady acceleration once the front wheel makes contact with the berm really helps. Proper suspension setup and body position is really key. At my age, I am not going to turn into a big jumper, so I have to really make up time in the corners. And yes, proper seat time is the key. When you go to practice, instead of doing laps, just find a few corners to work on. Once you get them down, then start doing laps.

    Climbing sitting down

    Key is to grip the bike with your legs, while at the sametime staying loose with your upper body. The comment about using your core muscles is a really good one. It's easier to practice this on a mx track as the uphills are not usually as rocky or rutted as you find out on the trails.
  15. if the choice is a 450SXF or 450 XCF, I'd choose the XCF. the xtra gear makes it more managable for woods. I have a 450SXF and I don't think it would work for me in the woods, especially in the tighter stuff. Personally, I still prefer my 300XC for woods. Just like the snap of the 2 stk. If I did have the 300XC, I would have gotten the 450XCF instead of the 450SXF. With the way guys part out bikes over at KTMTalk, I could have picked up an extra setup of forks and a shock so I could have a set of suspension for MX and woods.
