Acerbis Fuel Tank Reviews

If you own an XR650L, this tank is a requirement. Stock tank gets typically 80 miles without reserve. With this 5.9gl my typical mileage is 220 before I need to fill up, also without reserve. It feels great between the knees both sitting and standing. The only time it gets in the way is if your really going to lean the bike into the turn, the tank is wide further forward, so the natural leg out and forward to setup for the turn is not quite as comfortable. I find my leg out to far, kinda stretching my inseam. However, that is not at all a reason to not use this tank. Every time I get on the bike, I remember how important that tank has been saving me on longer than expected trips, along with being used as the "tanker" bike if a riding buddy needs a splash of fuel to get back home.

The following is a review of the Natural 3.2 Gallon Acerbis gas tank which was used on a 2014 KTM 150sx for the 2015 season. 

Who should use this product?

This product is aimed towards long distances cross country riders. It increases the gas capacity about 1.2 gallons over stock (which is nearly doubled), which allows for longer rides without fuelling up. This helps trail riders and enduro riders alike.

Fit and Finish

The fit and finish on this product was outstanding, the natural colour is a nice off white, which I prefer over white tanks as they do not yellow nearly as bad down the road. The tank is well made, with no plastic flakes to be found inside the tank which is a common issue with some aftermarket tanks. The tank bolted up on the bike 99% dead on. It bolted in with ease and required ZERO modification, which is always comforting. The tank is larger than the stocker in terms of capacity and physical size. It's a big tank, it should be expected to make your cockpit a little bigger. That being said, I hard time noticing the difference after a few rides. It was balanced well with a full fuel level, medium level and near empty. I even left the tank on for a few motocross races and still felt comfortable with it between my legs. 

The stock petcock can be used, and one is not included. I used the stock 150 petcock. The gas cap is a nice threaded full turn cap. It stays tight and is easy to take off after a long day of riding. It is built to take a dry receiver as well, which can be purchased separately. 

The only issue I ran into with the Acerbis 3.2 Gallon tank was that when my steering stoppers were backed off completely the fork legs would actually hit the tank before hitting the stopper. I rode with it like this for a few hours until I noticed it was rubbing. Had I gone further a few hours I could have seen an issue with the fork legs actually rubbing a hole through it. This was solved by simply turning the steering stoppers out about a quarter inch. 


Performance

The tank does as intended. I was able to get almost 40 miles more riding time with extra capacity (on a 150, which is a gas EATER). This is extremely valuable in long distance races where every second counts, and filling up every lap takes up precious time. 

Verdict

This is a great product for many different riders, and if you are in the market for a larger capacity tank, you should look no further.
