I was not in the market for a helmet before July 4th, 2018. It was on this day I rendered my current helmet unusable and was in need of a replacement. With my next race 2 weeks later I had to act quick. Alex over at MotoSport.com was instrumental in getting me squared away once I decided on the 6D ATR-2 Sector, thanks for finding my colors & size, Alex.

The short of it is I was riding a steep uphill that had an even steeper downhill on the other side. Because this riding area is notorious for head-ons, I was on the trail’s right ‘shoulder’ as I crested the hill. Waiting just out of sight on the other side, was a tree root. This root was almost the exact dimensions of a stair on a staircase. I pulled up the front end but didn't get enough lift and my rear tire grabbed the root and threw me front flipping forward. Wouldn't have been that bad had it not been for the hill’s sheer-like grade on the back side prompting me to fall from a greater height. Landed on my head and shoulder touching first, sliding for what felt like a second or two and then coming to a stop somewhere at the bottom of the hill. Helmet is severely compromised and I sustained only severe soft tissue lacerations. Very fortunate. My riding buddy whom is a Spinal Surgeon already recommended this helmet so it was on my radar but had not investigated it yet. He said 6D is all he will wear after his research, street or dirt.

This is the second helmet I’ve broken in less than a year and a half. This caused me to pause for a second and reevaluate the degree of protection I needed for my head. The terrain and speed of my riding has changed drastically over the last six months. I understand the risk associated with riding, and especially racing dirtbikes. So I wanted the best protection money could buy, but I needed to understand what injuries are sustained and how a helmet mitigates them.

Two heads; one helmeted, one without a helmet sustain the exact same impact. Lab testing at Wayne State University has proven that the degree of rotational acceleration was exactly the same between the two, with or without a helmet. That was sobering. Next Logical thoughts; 1) what is rotational acceleration? 2) which helmet manufacturers attempt to mitigate Rotational Acceleration the best?

What is Rotational Acceleration?

Well, without getting too technical, it’s the change of angular velocity with respect to time. (I.e. behavior of an impact, see image. (how hard & at what angle and what happens to your brain’s delicate tissue when this happens). Rotational Acceleration, also known as Angular Acceleration, is the primary cause of concussions & Traumatic Brain Injuries(TBI), as determined by the medical community.

Come to find out, before 2013, no one was making a helmet to address this. 6D pioneered the theory of buying your brain time between outer helmet shell impact and your brain colliding with the inside of your skull. They did this with their first helmet, the ATR-1. The importance of this technology is evident in the replication with systems like MIPS from other manufacturers.

What is different about 6D?  

6D: named for the engineering term six degrees of freedom. Which is what they’ve built into their helmets and advanced it with the ATR-2. Here’s how: the 6D solution to Rotational Acceleration (mitigated by buying time between impacts) was to decouple the inner and outer helmet shells and install their patented and now advanced Omni-Directional System.

The ODS system is a network of low-friction disks and elastomeric isolation dampers that allow the inner shell to move and thereby buying you time between impacts.This system incorporates an Expanded Polypropylene(EPP) outer liner (just inside outer shell) and an Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) inner liner, both sandwiching the advanced ODS system.

It is this system that gives the ATR-2 the unique ability to be rebuilt. As long as outer shell is not compromised, send 6D the helmet back and, for a fee, they will replace the inner lining and send the helmet back. 6D did not respond to my request for comment but I heard that service is somewhere around $250. Retail on the ATR-2 is $695.

More time gives the helmet a longer Time-to-Peak (TTP) Value:

The next issue to contend with is called Low-Threshold Energy.

This is, by far, the most common of all the impacts. These are the very common smaller impacts that we experience far more frequently than the more potentially catastrophic ones, thankfully. Before 6D introduced the ATR-1 in 2013, no helmet company cared about low-threshold energy. This is the most concerning injury athletes should have. I’m sure most have seen the growing awareness and massive effort to both learn and improve helmet and brain safety in all action sports. 6D teamed up with the NFL during their “Head Health Challenge” and learned about how to minimize these factors in their helmet-making and gained insight as to what materials work best to accomplish this.

We, as riders, are fortunate to have companies like 6D committed to rider safety and constantly pushing the boundaries on what we know and that we can improve that. 6D did not release this helmet just to release a product. They released the ATR-2 so the market had a safer alternative when helmet shopping. This helmet was a great decision. In my opinion it’s one of the best looking ones on the market. There is quality in the details all over this helmet.

I had to have that color scheme in medium and it was sold out everywhere locally. Alex from MotoSport.com tracked one down for me and got it expedited to me in time to race. The snap clasp on the end of the chinstrap is not as easy to fasten as some. If it were a half inch lower on the strap it would not be inside the cheek pad. Absolutely no discomfort just can be hard to clasp quickly with gloves on. Those new magnetic ones are slick.

The Details: I'm a huge details person. I think you find a lot of quality in the details. 6D hit this department out of the park. The lid comes with a nice padded helmet bag. One that you can tell has never been in a stack of 100 and has its shape.

The helmet comes with an extra set of visor screws, as they are designed to shear off in an impact, and a little branded brass key to articulate them. That key is now on my KeyBar advertising for 6D. The helmet included ~20 stickers. Very inexpensive for companies to do but makes a huge difference for the consumer. The helmet has a padded chin bar in case in contacts your sternum.

All in all, I would purchase this helmet again. I would imagine most could make a case for the price tag going in the “Cons” column. Honestly it didn't turn me off that much once I had done the research. I thought of it this way: how much would a head injury cost me? Would I recover? Fully? Would I have any cognitive issues? Even if you make a 100% recovery from an injury, I would wager a single hospital visit for anything more serious than a cast or stitches would be far more expensive than $695.

I am very aware this can happen wearing this helmet, even death, and I hope to never test the injury mitigation technology that this helmet possesses. But if/when that day comes, I will want the best protection money can buy on my head. It is hard to articulate the tangible value of feeling like your head is ‘safe’. My head has never felt safer than in the 6D ATR-2.

Well, My narrative will neither be as long or as eloquent as Freemotion's but I will voice an opinion anyway. Been riding with 6D since they came on the scene. I thought that this was certainly an innovative approach and vastly different than anything that was on the market at the time. I am on my second one, first one needed to be replaced due to crash. 6D customer service is the shiznit!

On to the review. What I really dig about this helmet is the innovation, fit and eye ports. Everyone knows about the tech side of this, so I will skip. Helmet is infinitely adjustable as far as sizing. You can buy different head liners and cheek pads to custom fit the helmet. Removable cheek pads also assist in the case of catastrophic operator error. 

Many people ask the question is this helmet worth the price of admission. HELL YEAH! From the protection it offers to the sizing choices it checks the boxes in all areas. Other top of the line helmets (which I rode with for many years) are effectively the same price point with less options. I am in the market right now for a new lid and will be choosing 6D again. G
