Every few years, if I haven't destroyed one in a crash, I replace my helmet. Since my last purchase there's been a lot of safety innovations, including the MIPS system (Multi-directional Impact Protection System). Initially MIPS equipped helmets were in the $500+ price range, so I patiently waited for something I could afford. Recently when scrolling through Instagram, a pretty rad looking helmet from Moose Racing caught my eye. It looked pretty mean and its iridescent graphics were pretty sexy. More importantly, it had the MIPS system at just $149.95! "Sweet!" I thought. "But is it any good?" I had to find out...

I'm happy to report that the Moose Racing F.I. Agroid Helmet looks as good in person as it  did on my 5" phone screen. Visually the helmet looks killer! The graphics are tasteful and the iridescent finish changes in the right light from purple to gold like a Fast & Furious car. The funny part is, I hate this on cars, but love it on the Agroid. Weird, right?

I slid it on my head for a quick test fit and it was nice and snug, just like you want it. I wear a size large in most helmet brands and the Moose lid was no exception. I'd say true to size. The Moose Racing F.I. Agroid is oval-shaped and manufactured in different combinations of two injection molded polycarbonate shell sizes and two multi-density EPS liner sizes. This is important because you don't want the EPS to just get thinner and thinner to accomodate large heads for example. The Agroid is offered in seven sizes ranging from XS to 3XL and four color combos.

What else?

  • 9 intake and 3 exhaust vents.
  • Stainless steel D-ring buckles.
  • Adjustable "Friction Hinge" visor.
  • Removable nose guard, inner liner & cheek pads.
  • DOT & ECE safety certifications w/ MIPS.

What's she weigh? Per my wife's kitchen scale, 57oz. (3.5lbs.). For kicks I weight three other helmets (non-carbon fiber) and the Agroid was about average for mix.

Features/specs aside, what's the Agroid like to ride in? I did 3 different 50+ mile, 90+ degree daytime super loops in the Idaho City and Lowman, ID area. It was almost entirely high mountain single track with some of last years Idaho City 100 course mixed in. Three noteworthy things stood out:

1. The field of vision is outstanding and above average. I tested with three brands of goggles and all played nicely with the helmet.

2. The visor is super easy to move up and down and it stays where you put it.  I never had to touch the allen head screws.

3. The ventilation is great. I have a couple helmets that boast some of the best ventilation on the market and the Agroid is on par here.

I spent a lot of time in the dust and riding through face-smacking vegetation. I was a little worried that the beautiful iridescent finish would get ruined, but for the most part, all the nicks polished right out.  I know, it's a dirt bike helmet, but this thing is purdy!

Wow does the Agroid with MIPS perform in a crash? Unfortunately, I know firsthand! As you can see, I'm wearing the helmet paired with an EVS neck brace and noted no interference.

While I may have been momentarily knocked out, I had no alarming concussion symptoms. The helmet did not breakdown in any way. The visor stayed on, there are no shell cracks, and it worked well against the neck brace. I was able to ride my busted up Gas Gas back to the truck. While I "walked away", I ended up with an AC Separation and a teeny tiny concussion. I'm just assuming that the MIPS system did its job. The helmet clearly flexed as the paint is cracked on the left side where I hit.

Pros ?

  • Super affordable.
  • Ventilates very well.
  • Great looking.
  • DOT, ECE, and MIPS.
  • Field of vision.
  • No gimmicks.
  • Crash tested with positive results!

Cons ?

  • Finding a flat surface to mount GoPro a little challenging.

Bottom-line

I didn't know what to expect from this $149 helmet, but I can honestly say that I was happily surprised. It feels well made, has features that riders have come to expect from a dirt bike helmet, and it offers advanced safety systems. While it's now just a wall trophy for my shop,  I lived to ride another day and that's more than enough for me. Two thumbs up for the Moose Racing F.I. Agroid Helmet. ??
