Great motorcycle that will take you around town and up just about any mountain.  Reliable and easy to work on, great all around dual sport.  It’s just plain good in every category.

It will get the job done. but for michigan trails with tight single track or endless large woops the suspension will leave you beaten up and left for dead.

I have a 1999 DR350SE and have had one 6 month season on it.. but no off-road stuff so I can only attest to my season of bombing around each night. I have only owned a KLR650 before for a few years.

If youre interested in a simple air-cooled work horse of a machine this would be it. It's not too heavy but its no light weight for a 350. I think gnarly rocky rooted trails would give you a good workout but the bike would be perfectly capable. I find it very comfortable on the pavement but I wouldnt ever take it for a trip that is more than a couple hours one way especially at hwy speeds...  this bike is very low powered (it's a 350 4-poke after all) and out of concern for the bike I dont like to bring it past 110km/hr. After that it feels like I am shortening it's life expectancy greatly. 100 km/hr is about right. DO NOT buy this bike if you have a lot of hwy travel. Many guys go up a tooth in the front to calm it down a little.. that is my plan as well. It's pretty good on gas.. I was averaging 320km a tank when reserve was hit.

My one complaint is the clutch... I bought an OEM clutch kit and the when this bike gets hot the clutch swells and the lever gets sloppy. Shifting becomes notchy as well and I give up trying for neutral.. it really annoys the hell out of me. Once the bike cools it goes back to normal. Many people have told me to do a mod the the clutch basket but it is a mod to fix something else entirely different... careful who you listen to on the net. People pass of advice like they know what they're talking about all the time.

Over all I like the way the bike looks considering its age. I also like the way air cooled engines look. I have no plans to take this thing trail riding so this coming season it's getting street rubber and going up a tooth in the front to calm it down at faster speeds. Keep the oil fresh as this bike can run hot around town and the proper oil has no friction modifiers in it because oils with additives causes the clutch to slip. This season I will change it in spring then in mid summer. At the temps I am seeing in summer in stop and go traffic it cant hurt.

It's a decent bike for urban assault and should operate trouble free if you are up on maintenance and dont drive the piss out of it. 3 of 5 stars because the bike is decent but not spectacular.
