DRZ 2018 DRZ400sm Carb boot damage?

I bought a 2018 DRZ 400SM last month off the floor. I have always wanted this bike and saw it as I walked by to the parts counter. I left the store then turned around and walked back in and bought it! A little about myself, I have ridden dirtbikes and ATV's my entire life. I also worked at a bigger shop as a "C Tech" for 2 years and I work on all my own stuff. I instantly took the new DRZ home and started to order parts, Fender eliminator kit with smoke tail light and integrated turn signals, front flush signals, the "angel eyes" head lights off amazon and took off the warning stickers/ reflectors. The bike didn't have enough power for me and I could tell it was running fairly lean at the top end. With 200 miles and its first oil change I decided to buy a full Yoshimura RS-2 carbon fiber, JD jets and do the 3x3 (ended up doing 3"x 3.5" to make it centered). After installing the carb I noticed the filter side boot has what appears to be chunks missing where it attaches to carb. At first I was thinking from moving the carb back and forth working it out maybe it caught the edges and sliced pieces off. But those boots in my experience are pretty tuff and made with good material. I have rejetted dirt bikes and such a lot and never seen a boot have what looks like damage like that from taking carb on and off. I started to worry about pieces inside the intake and possibly being forced into the top end. So thought I would search around and see if the boot is just like that. I am probably going to take the carb back off and make sure but would like some input. Another aspect is that I didn't see any of the pieces outside the carb or in the area where I was working. So could all pieces have went into the intake and none fallen on ground? doesn't seem like that's possible. I will attach some photos, the one of bike is before exhaust, still waiting for it to arrive. Thanks fellas!

    2007 ktm 400 xc-w

I am soon going to be buying a 2007 ktm 400 xc-w. It has a headlight on it, but its old, cracked, and ugly. Im having trouble finding a headlight that is an exact fit for that bike. I am really interested in the baja designs led replacement inserts. Does anybody have any experience or reccomendations for headlights for this bike?

    2002 400 Exc height

Hello and new to dirt riding. I just bought a used 2002 400 exc-r and as a newb I find the bike extremely high for me. Had the sag adjusted and that helped but damn I can barely put my feet flat and on the trails it makes it feel so off balance because my feet don't touch and then I loose my balance and of course fall over. 4 times I dropped her yesterday in the woods... ha.. the suspension is plush but i feel too high any tips on maybe lowering it or better balancing tips? I am 200lbs, 5'11". Thanks, Crazycarl012865

    Handbrake / Clutch lever setup

Hello all! I have everything setup and ready to go. I did the S to SM swingarm conversion, and I was lucky enough to have a friend that gave me 2 of the 50 stunt dual piston calipers for free off his bike after he sold it. All I need now is the bracket, a master, and a line, but this is where I want to be sure I make a good choice. I was thinking about going with the Dominator clutch cap on top of the brembo master cylinder.. But I am not sure how much adjustment there is on that. What would you guys recommend for the a stunt clutch/master setup? I do have the short impaktech clutch lever on currently, is there a good master that will fit with my clutch? All input is appreciated! Even trolling for a good laugh. lmao Thanks everyone!

    XR 400 Trans ratio

I have read the old threads on changing the gear ratios on a XR 400, They claim it is possible to use the gears out of a EX 400, at least 1st gear. However I could not find where anyone had actually done this. Has anyone ever made the switch with the EX 400 1st gear into a XR 400.

    Low Compression

Alright TT Gentlemen.. I appreciate any and all who have commented on my posts, without TT and the knowledgeable people in it, things would have taken me much longer. Anyway, I was shimming my valves the other day, before I did it when I checked the clearance.. There was none. I couldnt fit my smallest feeler gauge between any of the valves and the bucket. both on intake and both on exhaust would not fit. I checked my compression before I did this, and it was only at 60/70 PSI which I know is far too low. Before I tear into the engine, I want to get everything I need.. so if A new piston is in store then so be it.. But would valves that have far too little clearance at TDC cause low compression when cranked? Thanks again guys! - Brad

    Electrical Headache

Greetings Thumper Talk community, I've been using a 2002 DRZ 400 S as my daily driver all winter long without any kind of problems. Starting last week I have found the battery being depleting enough to not turn the starter motor. Using a jumper box I was able to get it running. After having the battery tested and replaced I assumed the problem was solved. Unfortunately this does not seem to be the case as the problem persisted. Checking with a multimeter and with the key in the OFF position there was no significant amp draw. So I'm not thinking there is a parasitic ground. Checked the stater and rectifier both seem to be in working order and with the bike running I could measure the voltage of the battery slowly increasing. Starting with a full charge by tender and 2 days of sporadic riding the battery is now down to 11.6 volts.. when I attempt to start it at 11.6 volts the neutral light heavily dims, and the starter motor sluggishly engages then stops. Assuming the new battery isn't faulty I am thinking there might be some short that is opened when the starter motor is engaged. But honestly I've no idea. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Side question: what voltage is required for the starter to start the bike? It was at 11.6V with the key in the off position and could barely turn over.

    Stall At Hard Stop

This is a battle I have fought ever since I got my bike. I have had the carburetor rebuilt, also re-jetted with a JD Jet kit. I have the 160 main jet, 25 pilot jet, and blue needle on the 3rd clip. 3X3 mod, yoshi exhaust, and this is on the BSR36 carb. When the bike gets warm, when I come to a very hard stop the bike slowly drops in revs and dies out. I am trying to get better at stoppies, and every time I put the back wheel down the engine is already dead. I cant progress any further unless I get this issue fixed. I have gone through all the vacuum lines, made sure there is no fueling issues up until the carburetor. I have pulled the bowl off many times thinking that the float is stuck and I have never found it stuck. If anyone has any ideas of what it could be, any ideas would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks everyone!
  12. Hi guys! I own a DRZ400s and have a question about taking a different approach to the standard leaky petcock Fix. So, I just ordered the fix a lot of people recommended on here for the leaky stock petcock: The Petcock off of a Yamaha Raptor. I did this after looking for other vacuum petcocks and not finding good alternatives. However, I found a part made by Pingel, and was wondering if it would work in conjunction with the Yamaha Raptor petcock, in order to give me the perks of the Suzuki Vacuum Petcock, without it's shoddy craftsmanship and limited life. Could one of you guys help me out, and tell me if this would work? Do I just place the Pingel Inline Vacuum Valve on the fuel line between the Raptor Petcock and the Carb? Or does the Pingel Valve work as a petcock all on it's own? Thanks guys. Besides hitting the dirt often, I am trying to use my DRZ to zip around Los Angeles and make deliveries with postmates/grubhub/etc, so I would not like have to shut off the manual petcock every time I hop on/off the bike. Thanks again guys!

    01 400 EXC wont start

I have a 2001 KTM 400 EXC that I bought leaking fuel from the float bowl gasket. The bike has been sitting for a bit over a month. I replaced the float bowl gasket and while I had the carb apart cleaned out the entire thing with carb cleaner, sprayed compressed air through every jet and pushed a thin piece of wire through so Im 100% sure there are no blockages. After reassembling the bike it would turn over but bog down and die if I snapped and held the throttle. Went back in and adjusted the float bowl tang to factory settings because I forgot to, and now the bike wont turn over. The only things I can think of are: bad gas, or I need a new spark plug. Pulled the spark plug and it was completely dry. And thats where Im stuck. This is the first bike Ive ever worked on so I dont know what else to try, any insight is appreciated. Thanks
  14. Hi, I have a 2002 Honda XR250R and I love the bike but the gas tank but, let's be honest, it is quite bland. The seat also dips quite low in comparison to the top of the gas tanks so cornering is more difficult compared to other bikes. I was wondering if there is any street bikes (such as the newer xr250 or the cr230) who's gas tank and seat is interchangeable with my older XR. I have looked at aloop kits and such but they are just too expensive. Not the older XR has a single beam to the handle bars while the newer Hondas have a "double wishbown" frame style. Thanks so much
  15. My DRZ has been very slowly becoming harder and harder to shift into neutral. Sometimes it just won't. I shift all the way down to first, and try to half upshift into neutral, and it's like i'm pulling my foot up on a solid object. I just cannot get it to upshift no matter what. When i'm rolling it seems to shift easy, but stopped is a NO GO. I just did a fresh oil change today. (Somebody said an oil change fixed his no-go neutral bike). Can somebody please help me out here? Give me some ideas maybe from 'Probable the issue' to 'could possibly be'. And i'll go down the list and try to get this solved. Thanks in advance peeps.

    Oil Leak from Shifter Shaft?

Hello, just looking for some advice on where this oil leak can be coming from. It is around the shift shaft area, maybe a little to the left. After reading around on here a bit, I ordered a CS seal kit after I found the sprocket nut loose. I pulled the sprocket, noticed the area behind it was dry, and replaced the seal anyways. After riding a bit, I noticed I still had the leak. I could obviously tell it was not coming from the CS seal, as I cleaned that area good and it was still dry. Now my best guess is the shifter or the white piece to the left of the shifter(someone help me on what that is lol). Also there was a drop of oil on the washer around the shift shaft I wiped off earlier.

    What big bore is this??

Just picked up a used 2005 DRZ400sm last week. Previous owner said it was a big bore. Anybody know what make it is? Also, the bike has a full FMF exhaust that backfires a lot when rolling off, just wondering if there is an easy way to tell if the carb was re-jetted before I buy a jet kit.

    Buying a DRZ 400sm

Hello there, In about a week, I'm gonna buy myself a DRZ 400 SM 2005 model with about 10 000 miles (16 000 km ) on it, and i was woundering if any one could help me with pointers i could have when i check the bike, like common faults or similar stuff to look out for when test riding etc etc. It's gonna be my first bike, so all tips are appriciated!
  22. Most of my videos are on my Honda, but I made this one on the DRZ. A pleasant rural ride in southwest Missouri. I also have a video on my mods and on some off road roading. My youtube channel name is Oklahoma Hank.

    Whats my bike worth?

Hey guys, my wife really wants to ride with me. In order to do that, I need to get a different bike ( or a different wife). I've been sadly been debating trading my bike for a cruiser. I need to know what you guys think would be a fair price for this bike for trade value. The bike is a 2000 Drz400. Kickstart model. The bike has been converted to supermoto using behr rims wrapped in brand new Avon trail riders. Front has big brake conversion. All new plastics including tank. New seat, Tusk street legal kit ( the bike is registered street legal) answer bars, geared 15/38. 470cc striker kit, k&n filter. This bike came with the fcr39 carb and an open air box ( 3x3 mod is more like 4x4 ). Full yoshimura exhaust. Carb has obviously been jetted and also had an extended fuel screw installed. Bike has roughly 300 miles on it after complete rebuild( all new parts were put on at the same time). Im sure I'm forgetting a few things but you get the gist. All the expensive stuff is done. Bike runs like a million bucks and is probably faster than 99% of the drz400sm models out there. Mainly due to the lighter weight of this bike and the stroker kit. What should I ask for this? Trade value? also, if you guys were in my situation, what bike would you guys look for? My wife is 5'4" 110 lbs, so I don't want a goldwing lol.
  24. Thanks for taking a look. I hope someone can point me in the right direction to get this headache solved. I'll try and be as detailed as I can without bombarding you all with a wall text.. My bike is a 2005 DRZ400S with over 20,000 miles on it (mostly highway but lately more dirt). I just recently brought the bike in (after a good 3 hour ride in the mountains) to a local motorcycle service shop (Cycletune in Portland, OR). They did a list of maintenance work as well as replaced the tires, relocated my ignition switch, removed side stand switch, etc. I took the bike back home and it died after about 15 minutes on the highway. Now, my bike is experiencing intermittent loss of power, backfiring, stalling, etc. The mechanics working on my bike threw up their hands and told me they tried and couldn't figure it out. They said they did not believe that they caused the problem and did not know what was causing it. They said that they could "start throwing parts at it" and charge me hourly to try and figure it out... Before my bike died on the highway and was towed back to the shop, I got their "level 3 service" (highest service package available). This service included: Oil and filter change, Battery check, Wheel & tire inspection, Cooling system check,Inspect/clean air filter,Lube/adjust all cables and pivot points,Clean and adjust chain/belt,Inspect brake system,Check electrical system,Inspect clutch components (external),Fastener check,Set tire pressure,Safety check,Spark plug replacement,Carburetor/throttle body synchronization,Inspect/change transmission fluid/driveshaft fluid,Inspect steering head & wheel bearings,Cooling system check & flush if needed,Brake and Clutch, fluid flush. After they took my bike back in and couldn't fix the intermittent problem, they gave me a handwritten letter saying the following: "Level 3 service was perfored. All fluids changed. Valves checked (within specs) side stand switch eliminated. Bike had intermittent stalling problem and was towed back to shop. Problem was eventually replicated on test ride. Intermittent cutting out, loss of power. Eventual stalling was experienced. Fuel petcock was checked at the time of stalling - appeared okay. Correct level of fuel was found in float bowl at time of stalling. Pick up coil was replaced. New pick up coil did not solve problem. Intermittent problem still exists." Here's a sound clip of the problem (it starts around 0:14). Bike was warmed up for about 10 minutes before the audio was recorded. The bike idles just fine. Any ideas on what is causing this? I'm somewhat mechanically capable so I'm going to try and fix it myself (partly because I lost faith in the shop I went to for a variety of reasons and don't trust that they will fix it and partly because other local shops have a wait time of 4+ weeks to get my bike in). Thank you!
  25. This is the cylinder to my 1980 KDX 400 A2. I can't decide if its plated or sleeved, a magnet sticks to the inside of the bore but i saw someone say its eletrofusioned with molybdenum so it could be the coating that's magnetic.... it still runs with compression but i hope to sleeve it this winter with a steel or iron sleeve so i can bore it as needed.
