    So i bought a 1980 kdx400...

I have recently bought a kdx400. Its not the prettiest thing but it runs(with rough edges) recently its been running odd. When you kick it over it'll start with a slightly high sounding idle but its not screaming but then after riding for a bit it starts reving high enough to putt around in 3rd gear without touching the throttle. The cable and throttle tube are pretty sketchy but its not getting hung to my knowledge ive adjusted the idle down to barely nothing on both the throttle tube and the cable end of the carb. I backed the throttle stop all the way out while it was idling high and it did nothing. A few days prior to this it would start up and scream but i chuck that up to one of the idle nuts backing out and bringing the idle up. I do notice its leaking oil from a corner of the head gasket but I don't think that it would cause it to idle high like this. I can add pictures if they would help. Any help is appreciated!!!!
  2. I'll try and give the timeline as best I can. Got a good deal months back on a bike that had cold start issues, well starting issue in general but it got better while warm. Had some issue idling but it ran really strong when you got it up to speed. Tried cleaning the stock carb multiple times (ultrasonic cleaned twice, once by me, once by a shop) and it didn't really solve much. Checked valves and they're in spec, which it should have been for having 9k miles. Don't get me wrong, bike ran well but wasn't reliable enough while starting that I didn't trust riding outside of my local area. Bit the bullet and bought an FCR MX39 which was my plan anyways, and that solved quite a bit of the issues, but brought up more. Start is better but it still takes a while, especially when cold. Idle is steady but will drop and die if too low. I occasionally get this loud pop while trying to start, like gun shot pop. I also now have this hanging idle issue when decelerating or coming to a stop. I can fix it by blipping the throttle which then makes the idles drop. If my idle is set too low, it will drop too low and stall. From my research I think it's a vacuum issue, which is weird cause the tubes are all there and the petcock vacuum is plugged. Took the throttle cables off to see if they were sticking and causing the issue but the video proves that's not true. I also checked for any air leaks near the boots, not it. Pulled the carb last night and only checked the slide but noticed this wearing on the top right corner and this super odd bubbling on the pressure plate. For the start issues I've heard bad CDI, but I'm not sure. Anyone have any suggestions or help they could provide? I promise a beer on me if I'm ever in your area! DR-Z 400S Led Headlight

First off Just want to say I am new to the forum and this is my first write up, so we will see how this goes. After owning my DRZ for a short while I found that the stock headlight was lacking, and decided to do something about it. There are plenty of companies out there that sell led lights like baja designs, or trail tech, but they are quite expensive. Another alternative was to buy just a hid, or led bulb to replace the stock one, but I wanted to try do something different so I decided to make my own set up. Started out by removing the stock headlight and mounts, then taking piece of 2" schedule 40 pipe cutting it in half and building off of that. Once I had the pieces of pipe secured to the forks with hose clamps, I used 1/2 steel rod and bent it around an old bearing race to create the hoop that would houses the lights. After that used some more 1/2 rod to fix it in relation to the forks. Once I had everything tacked where i wanted it, removed from the bike and fully welded it. After finishing that up, put it back on the bike the next day, to add a spot for the lights to mount, made it out of cardboard first to check the fit then cut the metal out. Then tacked it, removed it, and welded it up. Test fitted the lights and drilled the holes for them. Got the lights off of amazon, the two cube lights are 20 watts each in a spot beam configuration, and the bar on the bottom is a 30 watt flood beam. The cubes were $50 for both and they seem like good quality, and the bar was $30. They will definitely be an improvement the over stock light. Had to make a harness to connect all of them, and I wanted to have it so that when the high beam was turned on the low beam remained on as well. Ended up using a diode to prevent backfeeding of the high beam circuit while the low beam was on. After making sure the lights all worked like I wanted them to, took the mount to work sandblasted it and put some paint and primer on it. And began to work on the front cover. Decided to make it out of fiberglass, then cut out holes for the lights. Cut out a piece of cardboard first to see what id need before I cut out the fiberglass. After cutting out the circular part, mounted it up with the lights in and traced them to get an outline of where I would need to cut (I forgot to get pictures of this but feel its pretty straight through). Threw some paint on the fiberglass cover, and mounted it all up on the bike. Been raining like crazy lately and haven't had the chance to get some decent pictures of how bright it is, to go with the before pictures with the stock headlights. Im sure it will have some improvements yet to come like making a cover over the back of the lights but for now pretty satisfied with how bright it is, and how it looks.

    front brake locked

So. Just bought a 2000 drz 400. First trip out after a long downhill dirt road with lots of front brake the front wheel locked tipping me off. Picked bike up and the front brake leaver was floppy. After a while (yes I rode very carefully) the front brake came back. any ideas? The bike was transported in a van almost on its side and I've dropped it a few times getting up and down our very rough track. Any ideas?
  6. So I finally got around to replacing the horrendous Suzuki footpegs. Went with some Moose Racing "Onyx" 1/2" back offset pegs. What should have been a 2-3 minute video turned about 5.5 minutes due to an issue with the right side that required some creative grinding to remedy. It was a strange thing for me. I love the feel, I love the toe-room, but having to grind on a brand new $90 part kinda pissed me off. I spent my own money on these (video not sponsored by Moose in any way) so I think I gave them a fair shake in the video.

    01 400 EXC wont start

I have a 2001 KTM 400 EXC that I bought leaking fuel from the float bowl gasket. The bike has been sitting for a bit over a month. I replaced the float bowl gasket and while I had the carb apart cleaned out the entire thing with carb cleaner, sprayed compressed air through every jet and pushed a thin piece of wire through so Im 100% sure there are no blockages. After reassembling the bike it would turn over but bog down and die if I snapped and held the throttle. Went back in and adjusted the float bowl tang to factory settings because I forgot to, and now the bike wont turn over. The only things I can think of are: bad gas, or I need a new spark plug. Pulled the spark plug and it was completely dry. And thats where Im stuck. This is the first bike Ive ever worked on so I dont know what else to try, any insight is appreciated. Thanks
  8. Hello all! My name is Miles and I need some help gauging what to expect for condition/"reliability" you could say, of my DRZ400E for cross country travel! I am looking into traveling the Trans America Trail. I'm from Rhode Island and found an alternate rout where I can start on the West border of Connecticut. Ending in Colorado, to Nevada, then California; and cruising something along the lines of RT66 back. [just for reference, don't mean to ramble] The Machine: 2003 DRZ400-E ~6k miles total - 5k lightly ridden, never seen dirt - 0.8k %100 hard off road [past year] Frequent Oil changes, Air Filter changes {I ride with the guy I purchased it from nearly daily. He was good about maintenance on the regular, but also pushe the bike in the woods just as much!} Front and Rear Suspension rebuilt, carburetor rebuilt all last year Stock everything except FMF power bomb header and exhaust muffler, and Vapor Trail Tech, lights + fork socks Expected Maintenance: Top End Rebuild, Timing, Valves adjusted [Have not done compression test, but i would expect new top to be necessary] obvious things such as Brake Pads, Fluids, Chain/Sprockets, Tries, Heavy Tubes From this information, And Any You Can Think Of To Ask, does this DRZ have potential for the Trans America Trail; a ~6'000 dirt, then ~4,000 road return trip?! Or would I be better off selling it for a newer model? Thanks! -Miles
  9. I currently have a 2015 DRZ400S with 5k miles on it. I have the 39mm FCR carb installed, the airbox mod, and the MRD exhaust. I am looking to do the big bore kit with a set of hot cams to probably finish off the mods that I plan to do on the bike. My question is, with this bike at this mileage, is it necessary to replace or change anything else when doing a BB kit and cams? or is the bike still new enough and low mileage to get away with just bolting the kit and cams on? I just want to do it safely without risking anything, but also do not want to waste money on things I dont need. Thanks in advance for the input!

    Handbrake / Clutch lever setup

Hello all! I have everything setup and ready to go. I did the S to SM swingarm conversion, and I was lucky enough to have a friend that gave me 2 of the 50 stunt dual piston calipers for free off his bike after he sold it. All I need now is the bracket, a master, and a line, but this is where I want to be sure I make a good choice. I was thinking about going with the Dominator clutch cap on top of the brembo master cylinder.. But I am not sure how much adjustment there is on that. What would you guys recommend for the a stunt clutch/master setup? I do have the short impaktech clutch lever on currently, is there a good master that will fit with my clutch? All input is appreciated! Even trolling for a good laugh. lmao Thanks everyone!
  12. Hi, I have a 2002 Honda XR250R and I love the bike but the gas tank but, let's be honest, it is quite bland. The seat also dips quite low in comparison to the top of the gas tanks so cornering is more difficult compared to other bikes. I was wondering if there is any street bikes (such as the newer xr250 or the cr230) who's gas tank and seat is interchangeable with my older XR. I have looked at aloop kits and such but they are just too expensive. Not the older XR has a single beam to the handle bars while the newer Hondas have a "double wishbown" frame style. Thanks so much

    Whats my bike worth?

Hey guys, my wife really wants to ride with me. In order to do that, I need to get a different bike ( or a different wife). I've been sadly been debating trading my bike for a cruiser. I need to know what you guys think would be a fair price for this bike for trade value. The bike is a 2000 Drz400. Kickstart model. The bike has been converted to supermoto using behr rims wrapped in brand new Avon trail riders. Front has big brake conversion. All new plastics including tank. New seat, Tusk street legal kit ( the bike is registered street legal) answer bars, geared 15/38. 470cc striker kit, k&n filter. This bike came with the fcr39 carb and an open air box ( 3x3 mod is more like 4x4 ). Full yoshimura exhaust. Carb has obviously been jetted and also had an extended fuel screw installed. Bike has roughly 300 miles on it after complete rebuild( all new parts were put on at the same time). Im sure I'm forgetting a few things but you get the gist. All the expensive stuff is done. Bike runs like a million bucks and is probably faster than 99% of the drz400sm models out there. Mainly due to the lighter weight of this bike and the stroker kit. What should I ask for this? Trade value? also, if you guys were in my situation, what bike would you guys look for? My wife is 5'4" 110 lbs, so I don't want a goldwing lol.
  15. I replaced my throttle tube and started up the bike, it idles fine but as soon as I give it even the least amount of throttle it stalls out immediately. How do I make the adjustments to fix this, starting from the top and then if needed going to the carb. Thanks.
  16. Hey all, I've been having problems with my throttle position sensor on my Yamaha WR450F 2005. When the sensor is plugged in the bike runs very lumpy on constant throttle and is nearly un-ride-able. In the manual, and all over the internet, there are values of which the TPS must be set at and what resistance it should have. These are : 4-6 ohms resistance 0.58 - 0.78 volts My TPS is set perfectly within these values, being 4.9ohms and 0.72 volts. This indicates to me that my TPS is fine and there is no point buying another? But as soon as i unplug the sensor it does run NEARLY perfect, still very very slightly lumpy but hardly noticeable. Has anyone else had correct readings on their TPS but still isn't working? any help? I don't want to spend £300 on a sensor then it not actually be the problem? Thanks

    XR 400 Trans ratio

I have read the old threads on changing the gear ratios on a XR 400, They claim it is possible to use the gears out of a EX 400, at least 1st gear. However I could not find where anyone had actually done this. Has anyone ever made the switch with the EX 400 1st gear into a XR 400.

    Con Rod play

Just doing my first piston change on my 2004 EXC 400. Head and cylinder off, I can move the con rod from side to side a centimetre or two, affectively moving side to side on the big end. Is this normal/ok or should there be no lateral moment?Video here Thanks, Dan.

    Oil Leak from Shifter Shaft?

Hello, just looking for some advice on where this oil leak can be coming from. It is around the shift shaft area, maybe a little to the left. After reading around on here a bit, I ordered a CS seal kit after I found the sprocket nut loose. I pulled the sprocket, noticed the area behind it was dry, and replaced the seal anyways. After riding a bit, I noticed I still had the leak. I could obviously tell it was not coming from the CS seal, as I cleaned that area good and it was still dry. Now my best guess is the shifter or the white piece to the left of the shifter(someone help me on what that is lol). Also there was a drop of oil on the washer around the shift shaft I wiped off earlier.

DRZ 2018 DRZ400sm Carb boot damage?

I bought a 2018 DRZ 400SM last month off the floor. I have always wanted this bike and saw it as I walked by to the parts counter. I left the store then turned around and walked back in and bought it! A little about myself, I have ridden dirtbikes and ATV's my entire life. I also worked at a bigger shop as a "C Tech" for 2 years and I work on all my own stuff. I instantly took the new DRZ home and started to order parts, Fender eliminator kit with smoke tail light and integrated turn signals, front flush signals, the "angel eyes" head lights off amazon and took off the warning stickers/ reflectors. The bike didn't have enough power for me and I could tell it was running fairly lean at the top end. With 200 miles and its first oil change I decided to buy a full Yoshimura RS-2 carbon fiber, JD jets and do the 3x3 (ended up doing 3"x 3.5" to make it centered). After installing the carb I noticed the filter side boot has what appears to be chunks missing where it attaches to carb. At first I was thinking from moving the carb back and forth working it out maybe it caught the edges and sliced pieces off. But those boots in my experience are pretty tuff and made with good material. I have rejetted dirt bikes and such a lot and never seen a boot have what looks like damage like that from taking carb on and off. I started to worry about pieces inside the intake and possibly being forced into the top end. So thought I would search around and see if the boot is just like that. I am probably going to take the carb back off and make sure but would like some input. Another aspect is that I didn't see any of the pieces outside the carb or in the area where I was working. So could all pieces have went into the intake and none fallen on ground? doesn't seem like that's possible. I will attach some photos, the one of bike is before exhaust, still waiting for it to arrive. Thanks fellas!

    Electrical Headache

Greetings Thumper Talk community, I've been using a 2002 DRZ 400 S as my daily driver all winter long without any kind of problems. Starting last week I have found the battery being depleting enough to not turn the starter motor. Using a jumper box I was able to get it running. After having the battery tested and replaced I assumed the problem was solved. Unfortunately this does not seem to be the case as the problem persisted. Checking with a multimeter and with the key in the OFF position there was no significant amp draw. So I'm not thinking there is a parasitic ground. Checked the stater and rectifier both seem to be in working order and with the bike running I could measure the voltage of the battery slowly increasing. Starting with a full charge by tender and 2 days of sporadic riding the battery is now down to 11.6 volts.. when I attempt to start it at 11.6 volts the neutral light heavily dims, and the starter motor sluggishly engages then stops. Assuming the new battery isn't faulty I am thinking there might be some short that is opened when the starter motor is engaged. But honestly I've no idea. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Side question: what voltage is required for the starter to start the bike? It was at 11.6V with the key in the off position and could barely turn over.

    Stall At Hard Stop

This is a battle I have fought ever since I got my bike. I have had the carburetor rebuilt, also re-jetted with a JD Jet kit. I have the 160 main jet, 25 pilot jet, and blue needle on the 3rd clip. 3X3 mod, yoshi exhaust, and this is on the BSR36 carb. When the bike gets warm, when I come to a very hard stop the bike slowly drops in revs and dies out. I am trying to get better at stoppies, and every time I put the back wheel down the engine is already dead. I cant progress any further unless I get this issue fixed. I have gone through all the vacuum lines, made sure there is no fueling issues up until the carburetor. I have pulled the bowl off many times thinking that the float is stuck and I have never found it stuck. If anyone has any ideas of what it could be, any ideas would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks everyone!

    2007 ktm 400 xc-w

I am soon going to be buying a 2007 ktm 400 xc-w. It has a headlight on it, but its old, cracked, and ugly. Im having trouble finding a headlight that is an exact fit for that bike. I am really interested in the baja designs led replacement inserts. Does anybody have any experience or reccomendations for headlights for this bike?
