  1. Has anyone tried 2.5 fork oil on their 250R?
  2. I have a 98 xr250r, my airbox has been beat to all hell an back. While searching for a new one the only ones i can find for that yr are on ebay, used and in worse condition than mine. Is there another yr where the air box will match up with my bike so i can get a new oem one? my current one is so bad i cant even put my new plastics on because my airbox is missing the spots the plastics connect to. thank you in advance.
  3. Pro X connecting rod 1985 Honda XR 250 . Needle bearings need to be installed individually . What is the best way to install them & less likely not to fall out ?
  4. OK guys, I thought I scored really big when I got a neglected garage queen 1982 XR 250 R for a steal,...... (or so I thought). However I just talk to the guys at XR‘s only and they are saying that parts are very difficult to impossible to find for one of those. My plan for the bike was to do you some good mods for it and have it as my trail bike to ride with my family. I am also 200 pounds and was looking to increase the performance a bit but from the sounds of it performance parts are just about Unobtainium. What are you guys running into on this matter?
  5. Does anyone have a way to free up the bolts that hold the petcock to the tank? I've tried the T-handle and an 18v Milwaukee impact to try and "break" them free. You can see the plastic stressing as the insert it starting to turn in the plastic tank.

  7. Hi, Looking for some advice from the carb/jetting experts here. I'm the new owner of a 2004 XR250 (bone stock other than snorkel removed as far as I know). Not sure what jets are in the carb currently - haven't pulled the carb yet - but I purchased it locally in Denver. I took it up the mountains (~10,000 ft) this past weekend for the first time and noticed some weird performance. I imagine it's a carb issue, but not sure how these symptoms translate to changes I need to make. Do these symptoms sound familiar to anyone and any suggested fixes (e.g., fuel screw adjustments, new jets, etc...)? Bike runs fine in Denver. +Bike started fine when cold (using choke) +After riding for 10-15 minutes and gaining a bit of elevation, bike stopped wanting to at idle. I could keep it going by blipping the throttle , but if I stopped, it would stall. +I was able to make it somewhat better by screwing in the throttle stop screw 1/4-1/2 turn or so to raise the idle higher, but it still wasn't perfect +Also noticed some occasional popping on letting off the throttle +Bike seemed to run decently above idle (could be ridden fine, just wouldn't idle) Any suggestions on what the issue might be? Any jetting recommendations or next steps to troubleshoot? Thanks!
  8. Hey everyone. I have a 1991 xr250 and want a long range tank. No one stocks them in NZ and shipping from the states is crazy at the moment. I see the IMS ones on XRs only are listed as 85-95 for xr250 and also for 85-00 XR600. I have been offered this tank local for a reasonable price ($150usd). apparently it’s 15.5l in capacity. Are any of you able to identify it or confirm it will fit my 1991 xr250r? cheers blake
  9. Bought my Dads old 1996 Honda XR250L and brought it home today. He was the second owner, bought it in 2003 with 1700 miles on it. It now has 4300 miles on it. I used to ride it years ago up north with him. Bought it to bring back home so I can ride it around by my house. Lots of dirt roads and stuff around us. It ran great for years and was last started a couple years ago, but wouldn’t fire today. Probably needs some fresh fuel, plug, air filter, oil change, etc. Going to work on getting it running again and fix the few other things that are wrong with it (broken clutch lever, broken decompression cable, dead battery, possibly new tires). Looking forward to riding I again soon!

  11. First off I would like to apologize for the long post but I don't know what else to ask before stating everything prior to. About a month ago a buddy was riding his bike (95 XR250) and came to an intersection, bike was running great when he went to take off bike stalled and would NOT start, after pushing it a block and kicking like hell for about 15min it finally got started and was noticeably running really bad, louder, rougher sound, accompanied with burning blue smoke which it had never done. At this point I did some basic checks and nothing was found and kept burning oil (blue smoke) and sounded like crap. Did a compression test came in at about 30-50psi, so I thought probably a ring. Long story short rebuilt top end, cylinder was slightly bored, new piston, rings, new cam chain (it was discovered bad), same shop that did the cylinder did a complete valve job and rebuilt the head, which looked really good. Got the bike 100% back together today, triple checked timing (cam gear on TDC) before and after it crappily started, valve clearances were set to .002in and .003in (maybe adjust them at the beginning of spec range as opposed to the middle of range?), and when it started.... still the same damn thing, wont idle unless giving it gas, sounds like complete crap and burns oil (although a lot less smoke) did another compression test and it came in at about 95psi so better but far from spec. Could the decompression setup be to blame at all? He never had the decompression hand lever when he bought the bike nor the cable from lever to valve cover and ran great but he does have the kickstarter cable, can't remember if that one was hooked up at all. I thought I could just not connect it at all and it would run fine, since he never had half of it anyways but does it have to be set up? I appreciate the help anyone can offer, I followed the service manual almost to a T throughout this process at least I feel like I have and because of my OCD it also made me look over things many times before rebuilding for example I studied the piston rings for almost an hour assuring they were in the right place before placing it in. If its burning oil in my mind it can only be through rings and valves? Please help! I will post some decompressor pictures to possibly jog someones memory. (I know part of it where the cable runs through it broken)
  12. Folks I have a 93 XR250 with a 280cc Big Bore. She keeps blowing oil out of the left exhaust port. Also overheating and blowing gaskets (after some months) always in the same spot..opposite the right exh port. I pulled the head off, got a very weird mix of valve results....so the gasket blowing/overheating comes adjacent to the very hot right exh port, but the oiling is the opposite side, and I had recently fitted new seals. Needless to say head was torqued correct, new gaskets fitted but this is the second time the issue has repeated. Thoughts welcome
  13. Can anyone suggest where I can buy quality gaskets? OEM preferred if available, but info for aftermarket MFG's that make quality gaskets would also be appreciated. I am only needing top end gaskets, but if necessary I would also be willing to buy a complete engine set. There are just so many suppliers out there, and I have no idea who produces quality stuff. I figure there's probably a lot of junk out there, and for sure don't want to end up buying that!
  14. I am looking at this old 1996 xr250l as a first bike. My plan is to have it be a project bike for the winter. I am a pretty decent shadetree mechanic, but "know a guy" who can help if need be. I found this one in my local area. From the photos and video it seems like it's mechanically "fair". Cosmetically, it's a disaster, but that's not a big deal. Seller want's $1k, which seems way too high to me, I am planning on offering $800 and no more. Thoughts? Idle video, didn't see the startup. I have an 01 XR250r with the automatic compression release in the cam, all my other XR's have had the cable compression release which I both understand and like, this bike, sometimes starts first kick, other time it won't start for all the Tea in China, Kick Kick, nothing, so Today I put a new CDI on it, still the same, so I decided to do a compression test, I rebuilt the motor a month ago and had trouble understanding that Compression release, still suspicious, on the compression gauge, some times I get 50 psi and some kicks I get 150 psi, I think at normal kick speed, I should get a little less, that is after all the idea, does anybody know the correct specs for this? And the procedure to test the compression?

  17. I have a 1 inch gap that then stops splitting on the lower end of my 86. I think I have everything removed that needed to be taken off. What is the component stopping me from splitting it open?
  18. I am looking for a much hotter cam then my stock cam . Looking to find a mid - top end cam . Is There any available for my 1985 Honda Xr 250 , that would just bolt right in without any modifications ? If So Please supply any links to such listings .

  20. My 1988 250R came with a Supertrap Dated Fart Can. it sounds like its trying to be a 2 stroke...whats a good alternative?
  21. So, while I was trying to adjust valves, I put the eraser end of a pencil through the plug hole to help me find TDC (I couldnt get the T to appear in the inspection hole). When I cycled the piston with my ratchet the pencil got pinched inside somehow and the eraser (along with the $#^^&& metal eraser shroud) was missing when I pulled the pencil out. Since then I got an inspection scope and looked around inside cylinder, saw a few pencil shavings and vaccumed them out. I cant find the missing eraser section. Where would it likely have gone, the pencil was inserted and pinched during the compression stroke (piston was on its way up), could it have been blown into a valve? Intake valve I guess? I took off the header to get the camera inside the valves but I cant see much, lots of carbon and doesnt look like they open very far. Where the heck did this piece go??? Lol and yes I know I am a retard.
  22. I recently got into a little trouble on my 81 XR250R resulting in a bent pair of bars. I have never bought a pair of new bars and I am not sure what measurements I should go with. Does anybody have any aftermarket bar experience/recommendations for my bike? Thanks!
  23. Hello, Honda riders. I recently bought a good used 1994 XR250L. While checking & doing maintenance, I discover some slack in the top and bottom Pro-Link pivot joints. My parts sources tell me that the upper pivot bushing is no longer available - Honda dealer and on-line parts vendor. There are available these parts for XR250R. Could I swap the center Pro-link part (where shock clevis is bolted) over to the 250R part? It looks like the 250L part uses bushings, and the 250R part uses needle bearings? I think the bearings would last longer than the bushings - if kept lubed. Has anyone done this R to L linkage swap? Thanks
  24. Does anyone know where to pick up new wheels for a 2000 xr possibly already built/ put together? Or are we stuck searching the used market for replacements?
