  1. I have a 1987 Honda XR600R with very few miles. One owner and have heard that there may be a conversion kit and or, implanting the motor from a Honda XR600L with electric start into the frame of my 87 XR600R. I'm looking for opinions of value with accuracy.

I didn't see my post so I'm making another one sorry if I created a duplicate basically I'm wondering which quick-release/quick fastening Bolt the xr600 uses for the side panel it's like a recessed washer with a bolt that you twist a quarter-turn and it locks it. Does anybody have any idea where to get more I'd like to have spares
  3. So long story short this XR600 has been a long term project ever since i acquired it for free and busted my ass to get it running. This is about month 8 of me riding it and month 9 of it running... I recently put new clutch plates and springs in as well as new oil (20/50 motul 7100). I went to ride it a little today around the block and now when it is idling at a stop it wont go into neutral or even 2nd. If i apply enough force it will go into 2nd. I tried adjusting the clutch to no avail. Is it possible my shift drum is dead?
  4. Ooooook, this is a real shot in the dark because nobody would have a reason to do this other than me but who knows... So as I'm sure some of you know I have XR600R shoehorned in Yamaha warrior350 frame. One of my engineering problems I haven't worked out is my kickstarter. My main plan was to build my own arm that will clear the plastic and peg somehow. But then I saw a video of someone kicking over an TRX450R and I noticed it kicked foward! That would be perfect for my situation. So my question is what are the chances of using a trx450 kickstarter gear in a xr600r? And this may be a stupid question but would kicking it over clockwise vs counterclockwise effect anything? Thanks for any input.
  5. So I'm wiring up a tusk harness on my xr500 right now and it looks like a nice harness for what it is as well as Rocky mountain having options to buy pieces of their harness kit. I also have a xr600 that someone did a wack job making a duel sport kit for, my question is could I use the tusk harness and the lead where you usually plug their battery into could I plug into 1 lead from my Ricky stator thats on the 600?
  6. After a lot of searching on the internet I've finally breaking down and I'm just gonna ask. I live at sea level, average summer temps are about 68-75. 1993 XR600 with the Honda big bore kit (according to previous owner), FMF slip on stock header, stock air box. A couple months back I installed a 2008 FCR41 MX from a CRF450. My current jetting is 175 main, 45 pilot, 72 starter jet (I believe that is the common reference). The fuel screw was 1.5 turns out. Great success. Started immediately and seemingly ran great. More power across the board. Fast forward to today and I'm having a hard time gettin it started at times and now I'm wondering if my jetting is appropriate. Now that I have it apart while I look for the culprit of my "no start" situation I wanted to make sure the jetting is appropriate. Anyone familiar with this carb swap and jetting for this bike please chime in. If you have carb experience and my jetting seems fine for my conditions and elevation then please chime in as well. If there's a happier place I could be please make a suggestion. I don't want to leave anything on the table when I put everything back together. Thanks in advance.
  7. Ive been looking for a head for my 92, a guy just contacted me with a 90. I know the 90 is drum rear brakes but are there any other differences? I mostly just need top end parts (head, valve cover) thanks for any info
  8. I have my 1986 XR600R stripped down and I'm ready to begin the rebuild. I am doing the 2nd and 5th gear trans mod. Will most likely bore the cylinder and put a new piston in and then work on the head. I have a few questions regarding each of these. #1- On the 2/5 transmission mod as I read through the posts and as I understand it, I will need the 2/5 gears (2nd PN# 23421-MN9-010 & 5th PN# 23491-MW2-780) but I will also need to purchase the adjacent gears to 5 because being newer they have more dogs? So in the pic attached (I hope CongoXR650L doesn't mind me using the pic cause it works great) I would also need C2? And for someone else possibly looking for the same answer it would apply to any XR/XL pre 88. I read one post where someone stated the 86 XR600 only had issues with 3rd gear but that is the only one I have read about 3rd being an issue. I will change the shift springs while I am in there. #2- I know this question comes with some opinions and is subjective but I would like to know if the 629 kit works well. I haven't found much of a write up on it, it seems that most jump to the 654 kit instead. I'm not really interested in the 654 kit and I will still have to kick start the thing. I will be using dual carbs. My cylinder is currently .50mm over so I will either resleeve to 100mm or I can hopefully bore to 98mm with my current cylinder. Cost if probably close to the same but what about performance? I will be adding a cam as well. I know I have the 650 cylinder option but I'm not sure I want to redrill for pins and the 9mm tap. I will get the Wiseco or JE piston for it. #3- Is the XL600 head worth it? Hotcam or other brand? Considering I follow the two above statements and have a 629 with the 2/5 trans mod, Is the XL head going to get me that much more over my XR head. If I have to send my head off for work on the center cam channel then I may buy an XL head anyway. I would rather not run hardened anything on the cam or rockers. I have read opinions on both ends on the Hot Cams. Is rewelding the stock cam as good? As soon as I can decide on what direction to go I'll get some parts ordered and update my other post with progress as I go. I have been reading about the oil pump issues and will be using some of those ideas and a few of some others and my own as well. Thanks in advance for the input.

  10. I went out for another MX ride today and something is definitely wrong. I noticed my bike "skipping" like it would if the front sprocket was worn. Grab, let go, grab, let go. It did it in at least 1st 2nd 3rd gear. I never tried 4. I assumed my countershaft stripped but once I got home I realized that was definitely not the problem. Obviously we got some transmission problems. Off to the mechanic it goes!
  11. Hey guys I’m looking to buy an xr600r to ride trails with or to swap into my XR650L. There’s nothing near me but I found this add about 5h away. He says it’s a 1998 xr600r and the frame + body looks the part. When I look that the engine though it looks like an xl600r engine. It’s very noticeable if you look at the left side. Can you guys help me properly identify the engine so I don’t waste my time and money going to see it. Il link the add and photos. I've been running the SRC fork brace on my bike for a long time now, but I'm getting increasingly concerned that if a part of the assembly gets damaged I may not be able to repair or replace it. I'm wishing I'd bought spares back in the day when SRC still existed. Has anyone spent time drawing the brace assembly, rubber mounts, fork protector sliders/guides? If not I might take it apart, CAD it up and look into how realistic it will be to have spares made. As an additional note, does anyone know what year Scott Summers first started using the brace? My XR600 is eligible for rolling 25year old Vinduro's and I imagine modifications may also need to be period correct.
  13. Im not in a position to buy more. I have a 08 fcr from a CRF250 with the cables and fun twister. It has the 42 pilot and I have the ncvt needle and 158 main. How dow I rig this on my xr6? I know its beatin a dead horse... What you used,pipe size and what not.
  14. I’ve got a 1992 Honda xr600 and the rear tyre size is 110/100 18 do I need a inner tube at that exact size or do I need it bigger or smaller ? Thanks.
  15. Can anyone tell me if these are the same parts? Air fuel adjustment screw? In rebuilding carbs. The head on the old one was stripped and it was also impossible to remove work left hand drill and extractor. I end up having to drill all the way through the threaded section and then pick out remaining brass threads. The old piece is not tapered, line the new piece. Just I suspect it was over tightened by previous owner, and the taper was pushed through the carb body orifice. My jet kit instructions say to screw all the way in and screw out 3 turns. The new adjustment screw seems very loose that far out, like it'll just fall out from engine vibration if left at the setting. Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

  17. Hi guys, I have a 1992 XR600R that doesn't want to start. I just got the bike and I don't know anything about it. Never seen running. That said, the bike is very clean, looks very loked after from the outside.... The first time I tried to start it, after few kicks I used the decompressor press on inch and kick but nothing. SINCE then, I can continuously kick and it never requires the decompressor; it's like there is no compression anymore. Still haven't managed to start the bike. THERE is SPARK, I have replaced the spark plug. With the help of a borescope I looked inside the cylinder and the piston seems ok, at least it's not crushed. I have opened the valve covers and I can see the rockers moving. So, I am guessing (I am not a mechanic) either a valve stuck open or piston rings stuck. I have removed the exhaust headers and I could see/feel the valves going up and down. I will have to do the same test on the intake side later on... I really don't want to open the engine. I have tried to squirt a bit of petrol through the spark plug hole and try to start (with the spark plug back in obviously) and I could hear a bang; some smoke came out of the air filter. Maybe it was a silly move; it usually works with 2T. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
  18. Auto-Decompressor Question - 1995 XR600R (Single Carb model) I'm perplexed how the auto decompressor system works - is the fact that the first several kicks are compression-free, indicative that my system is working as it should? The previous owner removed the manual decompressor cable - so that is not operational, but apparently the auto decompressor is operational. For the first 4 or 5 kicks my bike has no compression. Then apparently the decompressor disengages and on that 6th kick, there is full compression for a couple strokes, then back to no compression. The bike starts very well - in just a few kicks, runs super well, and has amazing power. The lack of any compression for four or five initial kicks though confounds me. I experimented and found that if I loosen the right side exhaust valve so that it is apparently appropriately gapped to the top of the decompressor mechanism instead of the top of the cam lobe, I get full compression on every kick, but the apparent valve lash makes an awful racket - so obviously I know I need to keep the valve adjusted in relation to the camshaft lobe. Other possibly related conditions: 1) When riding, I notice a minor occasional misfire - which makes me wonder if the auto decompress is intermittently engaging during riding. I don't think its a bad seating exhaust valve, due to the aforementioned valve adjustment test. 2) I've taken the head cover and cam off and noticed the cam lobe contact surface for the exhaust valve rocker arm next to the auto decompression assembly has had scoring.
  19. Hi, I am rebuilding my old 83 Xl600R finally thanks to being locked down at home! I am in the process of ordering some bits i need. Can anyone tell me what jets i should be looking at for an altitude of around 900M. Or do i just go with ordering the same jets that are in the bike now? Also does anyone have a recommendation for an aftermarket small air filter i can use on this?. I am stripping out the old air cleaner and changing the look a bit.
  20. So I recently acquired this 1986 xr600r in non-running condition on the good ol' craigslist. I managed to get it running (it helps when a decade's worth of varnish is cleaned from the carbs) and she purrs like a kitten. It's titled and street legal here in Washington. I'm just trying to pin down a fair value for the bike, so any input or comment is appreciated. Thanks.
  21. I had my rear brake shoes replaced and when I put it back together the tire free spins only when the lever is compressed I'm not quiete sure how to set them to where they would work properly
  22. Hi again Thumpertalk community! So I've been trying to dig up some info online because I've seen many pictures of 83-86 Honda XL600R's and it seems like NONE have this little black cylinder part that my bike has (1985 Honda XL600R). I've attached pictures of both sides of this part and it's location on the bike. I also found a manual but not for my exact model year so I'm not sure if it differs. I live in California, which is notorious for 1000% smog regulation overkill but I don't know where this bike originally came from. I'll be removing the gas tank soon for some revival maintenance, once I do, I'll try to trace all of those hoses. Anyone seen this thing before? (the one with the orange tube between the carbs and crank case)
  23. Hi All, This isolation has given me heaps of time to work on this project that has been on the back burner. Bike is a 89/90 XR600R, a bit worse for wear, but it was running when I got it. Last week I kicked it over to my surprise, but the engine would cut out under the tiniest bit of throttle. Ok, cool. Pilot screw adjustment, easy. I took the carb off and gave it a once over, everything seems to be in order, other than the choke being sticky. Float looks good, level is 14.5mm. Fuel getting in there, not overflowing. I put the carb back on, and now for the life of me I cannot get this thing to start. I've gone in increments of 1/8th of a turn in and out from neutral on the pilot screw, nothing. It just gives a little rumble and doesn't catch. Is there something obvious that I'm missing? I've read through a lot of threads, and they each go down their own rabbit hole. Compression/spark/electrical... I know it was running before i fiddled with the carb, so I don't want to start changing more and more and really start to chase my tail. Hoping to get this thing running before the apocalypse really kicks off! Thanks for any help, will keep trawling old threads...
  24. I had just redone various things on my 82 xl500r. It does not start with the choke on. Only starts with it off. Below are pictures of my custom air filter setup. It's made from some foam filter from lowes (soaked in motor oil) and a soup can with many holes drilled in it Below is also the spark plug. I'm having trouble determining if it's running fine or running rich, because the lighting greatly changes the color. I think It's running rich. Would that be the foam specifically? or should I mod my soup can to let more air in? Also note, the little inlet at the top of the airbox is cut off. It's just a bigger hole.
