  1. It’s a long story but I ended up switching out an SST for a fatty but the silencer doesn’t fit as they were unique to the SST. Any issues with running the fatty with a stock silencer? Would I still get some decent gains or how key is the silencer?
  2. 2005 YZ125 - Hi. Can anyone help? - Do the later model plastics fit the 2005 YZ125? I’ve been told motor hasn’t changed much at all since 2005 to now. Is that right? looking at buying a 2nd hand bike for my son to get a feel of the bigger bike before he goes up a class - currently on a KX85
  3. New with the maintenance on this bike, so I apologize if this is a dumb question. While riding the other day, my yz bogged down to a stop and wouldn't start at all - it had good spark, getting fuel, air filter clean, brand new plug, carb just cleaned. When I was taking the carb off to inspect, it seem that the needle jet cover was just super loose and floating around. It actually almost seems to get knocked off when the float is released. is this normal? should this little plastic cover fit snug or just freely move around. Can't find much information on it anywhere.
  4. I’ll try to make a long story short here. my son has gotten into riding. He’s 15, 6’ tall and about 150lbs. Decent used bikes are rare around here, and I found a nice KTM 250XCF-W a couple months ago. It’s a bit of a handful for him. He’s learned to handle the power fairly well, but the weight kicks his arse on a regular basis. An 04 YZ125 has popped up and is a potential trade. It has a fresh rebuild by a reputable shop and has an Athena big bore kit. We are supposed to check it out sometime this week. I guess my main question is, is this the right move weight wise? The YZ should be easier for him to handle all around is what I’m thinking, plus every rider should pay their dues on a 125. Am I thinking wrong here?
  5. I’m trying to find a decent quality petcock with reserve for a YZ 125. The raptor 4 wheeler looks like it may fit. I Marist order and return.
  6. I have a 1999 YZ125 that has a nasty problem of fouling plugs within 30mins of riding. I have a Mikuni TMX carburetor on it. Fuel mixture is 32:1 with generic low ash oil. What can I do to fix this?
  7. Hi all, My 2017 yz125 is just running like crap. I have tried fresh plugs (BR9EIX), it can barely take off and feels like it wants to die on idle, then is weak in the mid, and bad up top as well. I bought this bike new in early 2018 so I know the full history on it, and it only has 10 hours on a fresh piston, rings, and all new gaskets and orings. I'm running the same jetting that I was last season and it pulled hard all the way through. Currently running: Stock needle w/clip in 3rd position 430 main 40 pilot I tried with a JD jetting kit that I have and there was not a noticeable improvement. I've tried everything that I can think of, just curious if any of the 2 stroke guys on here can shed some light. Here's a video, the issues can be heard pretty much throughout the entire video.
  8. Was taking apart my 2006 yz 125 Mikuni carb apart to clean and didn't see this part pop off until I was cleaning up. Cannot find it in the carb diagram anywhere and am getting tons of mixed reviews on what it is/where it fell out of. HELP!
  9. Hey guys, I just have a quick question about getting replacement plastic for a 2005 yz 125 that has the polisport restyle kit on it. Recently broke my wrist during a ride and messed up my front fender and one of the radiator shrouds. Looking to get replacements for em. I know you can buy polisport for the newer yz125's but my question is what year is the same as the polisport restyle, if they are the same at all. I think 2015+ is all the same but just making sure before i make the purchase. Let me know what I can buy.
  10. I know it’s a pain, but is it safe to ride with the torque spring broken on a kick starter on a YZ? The starter seems to fold up OK but obviously it won’t return to position if you kick it. The spring and the broken part have all been removed as we were doing an engine rebuild but we got it done in another location as were on a trip. we can’t get the part in for a few days and are leaving before that.
  11. I picked up a 2000 YZ125 the other day and I knew it needed work but while figuring out what it needed I found many missing fasteners and missing mounts. The cylinder and head seem to be from different year bikes. The head has 4SS stamped on it and the cylinder has 5MV stamped on it. The top engine mount is on the exhaust side and the mounts don't reach. Does it matter if I leave it and ride it this way? I'm trying to get it going for as little cash as possible. I only paid 100 for it. I can't do anything with it until I get the kick starter lever. So until then I am cleaning everything inside and out.
  12. I recently bought an FMF Shorty, and as far as performance, its great. But it's very loud, and I'd rather keep the noise down when I'm at private tracks. Does anyone know of any aftermarket silencers that would compare to the sound of the stock one? For me, its just for aesthetics as I'm not going to win a race with a better silencer. So if there's any that look decent and sound similar to stock, I would probably buy it.
  13. Yesterday at a practice session, I had a chance to try both the Stock pipe and a FMF Fatty/silencer combo, back to back. First off, this is on a 2017 YZ125 that is mostly stock except some gearing, tires, stiffer springs, and jetting changes. Since I'm near 195# and 55yrs old, and I'm relearning how to ride a two stroke, I struggle to keep the bike up on the pipe. So after reading that some claim the stock pipe to have more low-end then the FMF, I thought I'd ride with that on the bike for the first few practice rotations, as I learned the track, which was all wet sand! After the first three sessions, I found time to put the FMF pipe/silencer combo back on, and go out for my last practice time, and here is my take on both. If the Stock system has more low-end, it certainly didn't feel like it to me. It really didn't pull that great coming out of corners or up the hills as I was expecting. And when I would fan the clutch, it would climb back into the powerband, but only after slipping it excessively (imo). Granted, I will still learning the track and was slowly improving my two stroke riding ability, but the bike kinda felt lethargic, in my opinion. Then for the last session, I had the Fatty pipe/silencer system, and the bike really came to life! Sure, I had learned the track at this point, and my two stroke ability was improving as well, but that FMF system really improved the bike. The bike felt much more lively, responsive to any throttle inputs, and when I needed to slip the clutch, the bike would jump back into the powerband nearly instantly with one slip of the clutch. Mid-range felt much stronger with the FMF, and I would say that the pipe/silencer is a great improvement over stock. Hope this helps anyone that might be searching for real world feedback on the FMF system.
  14. I don’t think the piston is scored as the crosshatching is still prevalent. Is that amount of carbon around the exhaust port normal (hard to see in pic but completely coated)? Bike is an ‘05 and hasn’t not been ridden hard or long. Not sure if top end has ever been changed.
  15. my 2000 yz125 power valve linkage aka push rod had a tiny crack in it and snapped into 2 when I went ro reinstall it. Can i JB weld it or steel stick it. Or reinforce it with another bar on the side of it and have a welder weld it
  16. So i did a moose carb rebuild kit and my float is still leaking(from vent hose) after every ride or so. I figured the float was sticking or not adjusted right so i cleaned thoroughly, installed rebuild, with new needle seat, float o ring, jets and all. And have adjusted little lifter several times. Finally looking at this diagram and looks like im missing this part #8 (5ET-14261-01-00) Questions....1 how important is it and what does it do? 2 would this cause my leak issue and or my tunning problems? (cant get low rpm mixture right/ before 1/2 throttle sputter or bog)
  17. Since my power valves ara nor working properly I took off my cylinder and also took a look of my piston and I was wondering if the ring is supposed to be that loose?
  18. im having trouble getting my clutch cover on correctly. It worked fine before my water pump rebuild. It seems like my push rod is like loose and just spins and can move in and out. I know its supposed To line up with push lever but just doesnt see. Right. In diagram part 11 is what feels loose and part 20 needs to be orientated to engage correctly. Any help or input?
  19. I was in the middle of replacing water pump seals/bearing and notoce my shaft had some decent wear marks/scoring. So i have now replaced shaft as well but during my installation i noticed some up amd down play from the impeller down thru the seals/bearing to the gear. Not left to right but front to back. Is this normal?
  20. I’ve been lurking on this forum for a while trying to find an oversized gas tank for my 1980 yz125, if anyone has any info on one I’d appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction.
  21. Hi all-hey, just wanted to do a separate post as i think its important. Capt. Olives recently WAY above and beyond in helping bring me out of the pits of 2 stroke despair in diagnosing my son's yz125. I'm a kind of a newb at bikes (rode a ton as a teenager and then life happened!) but getting back into it now. My son who is a senior, pretty much had his whole senior year come to a halt with this corona thing. He is a 2 sport state level athlete and this was supposed to be his year to really excell in both (golf and tennis which both hold their state meets in the Spring) and that got cancelled. We had his senior trip to Disneyland planned out for mid June-cancelled. He is an honor student and works super hard. He was pretty sad, and so i asked him to come up with something else for his senior present and he wanted to get 2 dirt bikes so we could ride with his uncle. To make a short story long, got him a yz125 that sat for 8 yrs in a rich guys garage (he bought it for his girlfriend - that didn't last long!) so we had to go through the carb to get it running better. I was totally at a loss (i can turn a wrench-restored a few vintage mustangs) but this jetting thing is all new to me, and Captain Olives took me through everything step by step, and more importantly explained WHY i was doing what i was doing. That is the best thing, as now thanks to him taking a ton of his time helping me out, i am "kind of" on the road to being able to do this on my own! So i know some of the people on this forum i'm sure know a ton about bikes, and i just wanted to remind everyone that when you take your time unselfishly to help someone fix a bike, sometimes (at least in our case) it reaches a lot farther than just the bike running good again and getting someone back out on the trails or track. He took it out with his uncle for a 4 hour ride yesterday evening after i got it running great again with lots of help from the Captain, and came back after dark. I asked him how it went and he said "It was really really fun. Thanks so much dad. I'm exhausted and i need to go to bed!!!" I think the smile says it all. So thanks tons Captain for being gracious and giving of your time and knowledge! It is very much appreciated 🙂
  22. I have the cylinder completely apart and the right side power valve is stuck...it won’t come out. The left slid right out. I don’t want to damage anything. I sprayed some PB Blaster on it but still stuck (maybe that’s not the best for carbon). Thoughts?
  23. What's the difference? Looking for a YZ144 specifically. Believe it has the elite in it now. Allegedly.
  24. Hey guys, so I ordered a 9 oz flywheel weight for my yz125 and received what looks to be the completely wrong part. It is literally just a weight, no set screws with it or anything. Does anybody know if this will fit my bike?
  25. Why are the teeth bending forward towards the front tire? Aren't they supposed to bend the opposite way towards the back tire? Thanks. Shoot this is the wrong bike. This is my nephew's 150xcw front sprocket. Sorry not a yammi question, but would anybody have any insight on this? Moderators if you want to move it you can sorry.
