  1. Just want to give a shout out to the gentleman and his wife that hooked my buddy up with some gas on Monday 8-30-21. They were camped in a fifth wheel just south of Spring creek Reservoir. He was very low on gas and wasn’t going to have enough to make it to the trading post in Taylor Park. This was our last day of riding on our trip and they saved our day. It’s folks like you that make this riding community so great. Thank you again!
  2. Was looking at Red Cone pics. Dunno if its just me but it doesn't look hard? Seems like just a steep bit toward the summit but thats about it? Ive heard people say its hard but it looks pretty average as far as our CO terrain goes. I never ride that area because it seems to be in an area of sparse trails but thinking about checking it out. I can ride everything in CB/TP/San Juans pretty decently and have never been hating life except doing Carnage Canyon. SO.....is Red Cone any big deal for an experienced rider on a 250 2-stroke?
  3. Just thought I'd drop a thread here in case yall hadn't seen it, but RRMMC is finally able to put on the usual fall poker run @ Rampart Range this year. Not to get too far into the weeds, but we were not allowed to put on any events in 2020 and had a lot of things to work out with permits, insurance, etc in 2021 in the 'COVID Era' and just now have been able to get approval to begin holding events again. We have tried to make everything as "normal" as possible, but the big change is that registration for the event is ONLINE ONLY this year. There will be no same-day registration as in years past. You will have to pre-register but will still pick your hand(s) up the morning of the event. Registration information in the link below: https://rampartrange.org/poker-run-...PuFLuUSGgO_-v-7zb6SIEfyygTRm6nxYqEb6NmREqpjDY Please email the website with any additional questions you might have. Hope to see you there

  6. Went for a little ride… The south west corner of Colorado is the most beautiful part of an exceptionally beautiful state. It’s mountainous and brutally rugged. We went there with the goal of motorcycling a bunch of the mountain passes over a 3 day adventure. We ended up conquering 4: Stoney , California, Engineers, and Hurricane . Some had easy spots but the vast majority were brutal climbing followed by brutality scary descent tied together with rough washboard chatter. I managed 2 days and about 200 miles of this punishment before my courage gave out on a very steep rocky descent and then my stamina quit on the rocky chatter that followed. I just couldn’t conquer the fear anymore and physically keep up with the punishment required to keep the bike vertical. Very humbling experience. Rocky lived up to its name.starting out with a steep section of rocky switchbacks climbing out of Silverton. This part gave me confidence and my little 690 just ate up the assent never struggling or stumbling once. On top it was easier and spectacularly beautiful. The descent was rocky, steep and brutal. I fell over twice. My gear worked and I came through physically unscathed but mentally crushed with my previously earned confidence obliterated. On to Engineers. This one turned out to be the easiest. It comes out of Lake City and is popular tourist route. The climb up was easy other than the rough chatter that is omnipresent here. One rock strewn section took out Joel’s front tire so we had to stop and change out a tube. Made it to the top without further incident with just a few more challenging obstacles to navigate. The descent was a bit more technical with rocky sections and tighter switchbacks. I lost the front end on one tight left hander when I locked up the wheel in some silt on the corner. Bent my clutch lever but again my body armor did it’s job and I was unhurt. We finished out day one relatively unmolested. The bike was scuffed but easily repairable. Day two dawned with the aim to take it a bit easier. Joel looked up Hurricane and California as the next two passes to go for. I’m not sure which was which but the first started out easy and then as we progressed turned to crap. The crap came in the form of a rough very very very steep climb to the summit. First gear just pulling up and hoping I wouldn’t stop. I was praying “don’t stop” “don’t stop” “don’t stop” all the way up. It was steep enough that if I had I think I wouldn’t have been able to get going again. Thankfully I made it and reached the top. Pretty spectacular at the top but we didn’t tarry long due to a rapidly approaching storm that started to unleash some rather cold rain on us. Then began the soul crushing descent. This was wet, steep, rocky and scary as hell. I inched my way down with intense, paralyzing fear building as I progressed. I rode my brakes and just creeped slowly down, coming to a complete stop often just trying to survive it. This had me petrified and it took everything I had to get down. After I made it I stopped, got off the bike and did a crazy little happy dance but at that moment I knew I was done. I could do no more. Mentally and physically the mountains had me beat. Fortunately the remaining ride back was relatively easy. We still had more of the incessant washboard chatter but the scenery was beautiful and we stopped at some cool mining remnants and a little ghost town of Animas Forks. That was really interesting. The mill that we stopped at was a numbered kit. They must have built it somewhere, numbered the parts and then reassembled it at site. The ghost town was also well worth the pain to get there and contained 5 or 6 well preserved buildings. So anyway we finished off day two with me remaining vertical and uninjured but beaten. No more passes From here on I’ll have to pass thank you. Pun intended. We finished off the day with dinner at a former bordello that had a sign “We no longer offer those services, but we do have great food.” Overall a good time. I didn’t train enough and my age, stamina and mental fitness wasn’t up to the task. Am I glad I did it? Yes and no. On the positive side the views were outrageous. Spending time with Joel is always great. On the not so positive side the brutal terrain was too much, to physically demanding and to mentally demeaning. It left me old and having to face the fact that I just don’t want to do that sort of ride anymore. I’ll be perfectly happy throwing my camera in my backpack and toddling down some nice smooth road to take pictures of some nice easy to get to boring stuff. In the future if I want to see the “out there” stuff I’ll watch it on YouTube. Lessons learned: 1. Don’t attempt to camp in a tent at 10500 feet in late August. It got down to 28 degrees. 2. Train harder/longer. You are old, fat and, round although a shape, is not the one you want. 3. The “easy” pass seldom is. 4. Sometimes YouTube is better than actual experience. 5. If someone says “Let’s go ride a bunch of passes for 3 days based in Silverton.” Politely say “Are you out of your f-ing mind?” and “No thank you.” “I’ll pass.”
  7. Just saw this....target for re-opening all lanes through Glenwood Canyon is....drum roll please..... ....ski season. Could the timing be any worse with 50 essentially out of commission? Can't wait to drive to Utah this fall.... https://kdvr.com/news/local/several-agencies-involved-in-i-70-cleanup-and-repair-through-glenwood-canyon/
  8. Years ago when I rode the Colorado portion of the CDT motorcycle route, I came upon this tunnel and have forgotten where it was. Anyone know where and what's it's called? Thanks.
  9. If ya live in the state, you saw how bad it was yesterday (they say top 5 worst air in world). Heres a pic of Denver that shows how opaque it was. During the afternoon, I was in CO Springs and you could barely see Pikes Peak! And tomorrow is supposed to be worse cuz a big high pressure will be bringin in a big pulse of smoke from areas west and north of here. :-( No cardio for me till this clears out. https://www.9news.com/article/weather/weather-colorado/denvers-air-quality-was-the-5th-worst-of-any-major-world-city-thursday/73-051fdd5e-487e-4aec-9adb-5a7eab6b554c
  10. Email today: Hello again friends and neighbors, At long last! After years of all our work and input, the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison (GMUG) National Forests will publish the draft revised forest plan and draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) on Friday August 13th, 2021. This will initiate a formal 90-day comment period that will conclude on November 11th, 2021. All materials for the draft revised forest plan and DEIS will be published at the Forest Plan webpage: http://www.fs.usda.gov/goto/DraftForestPlan Stay tuned for more announcements on an upcoming series of virtual webinar and open house events. 11. I know some of us have struggled with finding 2 stroke pipe repair after pacific crest went in the crapper and earned a reputation for never completing the work and sending your pipe back (and not answering inquiries about where is my pipe?) I recently dented my 3rd pipe (FMF Gnarly) on my 2012 KTM 300 XC-W. At least for me, these pipes are constantly being tweaked, dented, twisted etc from even simple falls. Guess I need to learn to never crash. Most recently, from either hitting an unseen stump/log in the overgrowth on side of trail or dropping my bike when I stopped on a high spot, I managed to not only put a nearly 90 degree bend in my pipe at the muffler connection, but I also broke the carb vent off and the frame mount for the pipe. The pipe itself had very little dents, but I also figured out that my aluminum flatland racing pipe guard transferred all the energy into twisting and bending the pipe rather than taking a dent (which would have been preferable). Instead, the pipe was very twisted out of shape. Won't be running a pipe guard going forward as I think it made it worse and I guess I will see how that works out. Since I now had 3 bent pipes (OEM + 2 FMF) all of which didnt fit , I needed to find someone who did pipe repair. Found someone named Jon at Front Range Pipe Repair in Golden that does work on two stroke pipes (google it if you are interested). Had no idea there was someone in the area who did repair. Rather than having to ship both ways (and pay the shipping cost), I was able to deliver them to Jon for repair. I think Jon said about 1-2 weeks to get them done and got all of them done in less than a week. Also, did some test fitting in person on my bike and was able to make some further tweaks to the neck of the pipe to get an even better fit. You all may know this already-- but the slightest bend in the neck can translate to the pipe being way off from the frame mounting points and the muffler connection. To me that is the hardest part to fix. I know that removing dents takes some skill too but hasn't been a big issue for me with the way I keep damaging my KTM 300 pipes. Had never met Jon before, but got a chance to meet him in person, talk to him about his pipe repair business and of course chat (a lot) about dirtbiking. He started this because he rides (and manages to damage his own exhaust pipes) and subsequently has learned how to do pipe repair and figured he would start his own business during COVID times. I am a member of some offroading forums and he reminds me of some of the hobbyists who start making stuff for their own vehicles and pretty soon turns into a business run out of their garage because other members are asking to do or make the same for their vehicle. Anyhow....I have zero affiliation or financial interest in this business. I like to support local guys -- especially dirtbikers and I have been wanting to find someone who can do the work and figured I would mention my experience here on the Rocky Mountain forum at TT for anyone else who is looking for pipe repair.
  12. me and my boy have been riding taylor park for about 18 years we are looking for something less traveled by sxs and quads quite frankly they are the rudest sloppiest inconsiderate folks ive ran into were just looking for some quite camping and single track 40- 100 mile loops to hit .tomichie creek seem decent but want to try some thin new ,any sugestions would be appreciated
  13. Hit up Big Elk Meadows area this weekend... what a BLAST! Started at Johnny Park Rd ( Trail #118 -- by "Popes Hill") => Parachute Hill Rd (Trail #329 -- the green trail at the end of Johnny Park Rd) => Pierson Park Rd (Trail #119) Having not ridden in a very, very long time -- I was pretty damn whooped (41 years old / 160lbs / gotten "soft" 😆 ) riding a '21 Beta 500RR-S after about 3ish hours up here. IMO - these Jeep trails are gnarly af. VERY rocky, some very steep / loose rocky sections and with some flowy stuff to play around in. Since this is so close to me -- it will be my go-to for this summer for sure... I'm going to use it to get back into riding shape! I highly recommend checking it out if you are in the area... you _won't_ be disappointed! (I guess I should preface it by saying that it's moderate at minimum -- skill level wise... not hard enduro -- but gnarly trail riding.)
  14. Does anyone know if the Golden Horseshoe trail connects to the red cone trail system? Montezuma to Breckinridge via ohv-trail?
  15. Does anyone know this years trail conditions on the Tincup Pass to Cumberland Pass to Hancock Pass Loop as they stand presently? My nephew has been learning and riding well on the Front Range gravel trail systems and I want to introduce him to some rocky routes and see how quickly he learns so that I can graduate him eventually to Sargents and CB/Taylor singletrack. This seems like a safe, wide, not terribly difficult loop that he could learn on but Im not sure how chewed up it is this year. I dont want him too far over his head. Side note- as a kid I remember driving to the summit of TinCup Pass from St Elmo (when it actually was a ghost town) in a 1978 Toyota Celica and having no problem. Heres lookin at you SXS's.
  16. Headed to Taylor Park this week with a CRF250F. I’ve ridden the SxS and quad trails several times but fairly new to 2 wheels. I’m looking for some single track recommendations for a beginner that will be riding solo. Thanks!
  17. Just reading about the mudslides this past Tuesday that shutdown Hwy 285 South of Poncha Springs. Looked nasty in the pictures. Anyone know if the Rainbow Trail sustained any damage as a result? Just curious, as a similar event last year closed down a large portion of the Rainbow. Thanks
  18. Looking for suggestions for primitive/dispersed camping close to good riding spots. I’m thinking central or northern Colorado mountains, I’ll be heading north to Montana later the following week. South west of Denver is fine. Taylor Park, Gunnison area, ??? Never been to Colorado so I have no real idea where I should be looking. Got stickers from the forest service for both the thumper and smoker so I should be good to go, just need to figure out where. I should arrive late the week of the 4th so I hope there will be camping spots open somewhere? If anyone want to ride or already has a trip planned and doesn’t mind company please let me know. I’m not the fastest or most experienced rider, but like single track with a little challenge or a nice flowy trail through the mountains not a super hard enduro guy with my skill set though. If you would rather pm me to keep some or your favorite spots off the web feel free, or tell me to pound sand. Either way thanks for the help!!
  19. Hi friends, I had a thread a few months ago about singletrack in Durango, as I was moving here, and well - here I am. I'm on a Husky FE450 (plated). I also have a 701 that I'll use for some of the more fire-roady / 4x4 passes with camping gear. I'm used to driving a few hours to access some good trails, so I'm sure I'll make it out to GJ / Montrose / CB / Gunnison / Taylor Park areas in the coming months, as well as northern NM and UT (I'm from northern UT, so I've ridden Moab and Green River a bit). I hope to ride some of these trails in the near future (though I know little about them except what's on Youtube for Calico and Trailforks / COTREX for Hermosa Creek): Hermosa Creek (close enough for after-work rips) Pole Creek near Silverton Calico, Eagle Peak, etc If anyone ever wants to get out and ride, or doesn't mind me tagging along, lemme know! @BOAB I'd like to come down and tag along (if you're willing) at some point in the future, or even just pick your brain on a few spots. You mentioned Glade Recreation Area, but you shared a photo or two of some other areas as well.
  20. Tried to ride this section over the weekend as it's marked as single-track. Rode with a buddy who rode it years past so he knew it existed. Now, it's a 20' wide bulldozed road with massive logging clear-cut on either side. No joke the slash piles were 30+ ft tall. This section in its original form is lost for good. Probably fire mitigation, which sucks a trail was sacrificed. Anyone know the true story and if a new trail may be cut in?
  21. Curious if anyone knows of a mostly dirt route from the Greater Denver Area / Front Range to Breckinridge. My digging has helped me learn that Google maps is pretty much useless for this. COTREX isn't really helping either. I recently bought a Galaxy Tab A tablet to use for big screen navigation on my bike. I loaded OSMAnd+ to try it out but haven't had the time to master route planning with it. I'm pretty sure this is a fantasy quest but thought I would ask around just in case. I know there's a route from Georgia Pass to Breck and I would like to make that the final leg if possible. Getting to Georgia Pass on dirt with anything bigger then a mountain bike is probably not possible. For what it's worth... I'm riding an 07 KTM 690 supermoto with 450exc forks and an 85sx shock. 120/17 TKC80 front tire and 170/17 e805 rear. The bike is about 70 pounds heavier then a 690 Enduro, around 350lbs. So modest single track is definitely not a problem with this bike but if I have to navigate boulder fields or lift the bike over anything it's not happening. I'm in Highlands Ranch so I have to take highways and streets no matter what. Just hoping for some dirt on the way. Appreciate any suggestions.
  22. My bud Steve and I just spent 3 1/2 riding days at Taylor. It's been 14 years since I was last at Taylor. Rode there for about 10+ years and then moved on to Baja/Ridaho/Arizona/Nevada/Moba etc. Camped by Spring Creek across the road and down from the Mosca Campground (no camp host just a "self pay station"). There was a "Volunteer Camp Host" about 100 yards down from us (never came by to say Hi) and one other ATV camper about 75 yards up the hill. Steve and I did a morning and afternoon ride. Doctor's Park/Italian/Bear/Deadman/Reno Ridge/Star/Lily Pond/Roaring Judy/Cement Mtn Tr/Rosebud/Block & Tackle (someone did a lot of work with the concrete blocks in the trails, Good job) /Double Top/Hunter's Creek/ of course Flag to get up and back from Reno. FYI: If you have to get from American Flag Mt to Reno Divide the lower Italian Creek Road is a BITCH. Damn it's awful. Don't know what the upper road is like? The water crossing at Doctor's Gulch to get back up to Spring Creek almost got me. Don't try going straight across, need to head downstream and then across. Trails were dusty and only one section of snow on Star. Met/Saw Zero motorcycles on the trails or roads. Good times! Steve (Albq) Husky 501/ Lee (KC) KTM 500 (combined 100 years riding/racing dirt bikes)
  23. Heading to Salida for a week on 7/20. Going to bring the 790 and 500 or 300. I have COTREX and ordered the Lat 40 map for the area. Would anyone be up for a ride? Should I plate the 300? I've ridden part of the Rainbow trail on the 500 a couple of years ago. Over 60 A rider from Texas. Any advice would be appreciated.
  24. If anyone is interested, here is the legislative report from COHVCO for the 2021 legislative session. This was shared with the RRMMC folks at our monthly meeting by the COHVCO chairman, so I figure it's probably OK to post it here for everyone to read it if they want to. With that said, per COHVCO ... the next legislative session is going to be one EVERYONE wants to pay close attention to. With the explosion of dumb shit tourists from California and Texas buying up SxS vehicles and pissing everyone from land owners to cops to dirt bikers off, the state legislature is looking to cash in on the discontent to close off even more land and put more regulations on the "OHV" community. Please note - "OHV" community includes dirt bikers, even though we aren't the ones who are causing the problems. The COHVCO Chairman voiced some concerns about infighting within the "OHV" community and that it needed to stop, eg, dirt bikers blaming idiots in SxSs for causing the brunt of the problems. I agree and disagree. I personally would be thrilled if they banned SxS usage on anything but select county roads and private lands, but I also know that if they did that dirt bikes would soon be part of that bad. Its a really unfortunate situation that people's stupidity has gotten the responsible folks into. At any rate, message is watch what comes up regarding OHV use for the 2022 legislative session closely and don't hesitate to email your congressional delegation opposing stupid legislation to try and control stupid people because its a losing battle and its the responsible folks that will be left up screwed in the end.
  25. Hi, I got an 02 400s and it needs some work. I'm not good at wrenching, and local shops aren't too keen on working on a 20 year old leaker. Can anyone reccommend a good drz tech in the springs or therebouts?
