  1. Hey guys/girls, I'm looking at buying a new KTM and don't want to spend the money without riding one first. I'm on the fence between the 250 and 300xc models. I race c class in local hare scrambles and will be racing my first GNCC (Camp Coker) in a few weeks (I'm pretty slow btw). I love casual trail riding as well. My current bike is an 09 200xc. My riding buddy has a 2020 300 husky and It is an absolute dream to ride, but at 170lbs wet I'm not sure I wouldn't be just as happy with a 250 and have less felt weight in the single tracks. I'm always looking for new people to ride with and would enjoy meeting up with someone at a local compound. We have a pretty awesome private 6mile loop in Sumter, SC also. Its tough to spend 10k on something without giving it a test ride... Hit me up if anyone's interested, KTM or not!!
  2. Today I want to shift gears, open the floor for discussion, and talk about the state of dirt biking as it relates to the bikes we buy, ride, and maintain. In my relatively short existence, a number of things have happened in the industry which has been interesting to see. A few examples, which are not by any means exhaustive of all that has gone on, include the emergence of the four-stroke power plant, electronic fuel injection, improved tire technology, electric bikes, and the development of air forks. On a more micro-level we’ve seen improvements to materials, new manufacturing processes, and coating processes which have allowed ever increasing performance. As a fellow rider and someone who has no bias or stake when it comes to manufacturers and product offerings, I’d like to hear your thoughts as they relate to today’s machines. My question to you is a simple one, are your needs as a consumer being met by today’s manufacturers and bikes? What aspects of today’s machines do you love and what are pain points for you? If you could do things your way, what would you change? Are there machine variants that aren’t being offered? Leave a comment below that addresses these questions or share your historical perspective! I look forward to your responses. Thanks and have a great week! - Paul https://www.diymotofix.com/
  3. will a clutch basket from a 98kx250 fit a 96kx250? How about the carb also?
  4. hi does anyone know where to buy dirtbike exhausts that are made for highway use im thinking to legalize my kawasaki kx85cc dirtbike and any tips for doing it?
  5. Hey guys, I am looking into a new kx, just curious, I have looked into the 2017s and all the reviews say that the linear power is quite boring. I am coming off of a 2010 Kx250f carbureted so I like the snappy hit of the carb however I need a new bike to keep up with racing. The reviews on the 2018s all talk about all the updates on the 18 but there isn’t any mention on the power compared to the 17. My question is, is it really worth paying more for an 18 or getting a cheaper 17. Which one do you guys own and what do you think about them? I was thinking of getting a 17 and putting a vortex ignition on it. Do you reckon this is a better idea than getting a 2018? Thanks.
  6. I replaced the transmission on an '05 kx85, and ive put the cases back together and everything spins freely, it shifts through all the gears, but once you put that tensioner thing that presses on the shift drum (dont know what the part's called) you cant shift into 3rd, itll get stuck halfway between second and 3rd, but once you take off that tensioner thing you can spin the drum and shift through all the gears just fine, whats going on?
  7. Hi all, I have a 2004 kx 250 2 stroke and it wont start. it only backfires. I was out riding it one day and came up to a stop so the bike was just idling and it started to try and die so i revved it up a few times then let it die and now it wont start back up. It only pops or backfires when you kick it. Its getting good spark and i just put a brand new plug and coil in it. I took the reeds apart and they look like they're brand new. It was running great before so i dont know what happened. Im thinking it could be a fuel problem even tho the plug is a little wet if you take it out after a bunch of kicking. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks
  8. I just bought a 2008 WR250FX a while back and am getting it street legalized soon. I would really like to paint my rims either black (to go with my blue spoke covers) or blue. I would like to do this at home as I do not have enough money for aftermarket rims. I have looked into powdercoating, anodizing, and dual/single stage automotive paint so far. (Powdercoating looks like it might chip during tire change and there is not a local spot for anodizing and it looks expensive) Does anyone have any suggested methods or ideas for painting them at home? Do not tell me spray paint! Also please do not talk me out of it because I'm hard set on NOT buying new rims! Also we have a very capable, controlled, and large work space so any challenges shouldn't be an issue. Give me your thoughts please! Kind of stuck!
  9. So I just took off the valve cover to check valve clearance on my new to me/for the wife 2017 kx250f. Bike looked 100% stock one notch on chain adjustment from new showroom bikes and still had the nubs on very edge of tires. The cases had some scuffs but nothing to bad, looks like no tools marks on the timing indicator or valve cover bolts just oil cap. So my question is is the marking on the camshaft holders from the factory or has someone all ready been in the head? The exhaust is at 15 and the intake is at 13mm I have no clew what the 39 means? Thanks for any input also on a side note it was kind of hard to start before changing the oil but after it fired right up so easily that I was able to start it with my hand when cycling the oil thru is that also normal? I’ll try and take a vid also it’s only 19deg out!
  10. Hey, I have a question. But first let me tell you that I am new to dirt biking, so I don't know anything. I purchased a 2001 YZ 125 in October and the seller said that he just changed the Piston and Clutch. I took it out in Gorman (OHV Riding Area) and like I said I am new, so I kept stalling the bike because I was learning and just let go of the clutch. But then when my dad got on, he said it is my fault for just letting go of the clutch lever, but also the clutch plates are a little bad. I can start the bike, let the clutch out 90%, and ride. Like shouldn't it start to move when I am half way of letting go of the clutch lever? I've seen videos of people holding their clutch lever half way and are moving 10-15mph. I can ride it perfectly fine now... But just wondering, what's wrong with it?
  11. Does anyone know a company that has decent prices for custom expansion chambers? My kdx 400 expansion chamber is cracking and I’d like to get a new stock one made same as the oem just fresh metal. Any suggestions would help alot!!
  12. I have a 2006 kx250f starts first kick when cold takes a few kicks when hot but i was out riding with my buddies and i let one of them ride my bike when he went to start it up he kicked it over and was telling me it has very low compression and that it should not be that low, is this normal or a problem im just looking for someone who knows what there talking abouts advice cause if its a problem i wanna fix it to give you an idea how much compression there is you can push down the kick starter with your hand but it still takes effort. pic for attention
  13. In your opinion, which Factory Team would you race for? -Suzuki -Honda -Kawasaki -Yamaha -Husqvarna -KTM -Also, 2 stroke or 4 stroke?
  14. So I have a 2013 Yamaha yz450f and I am wondering if I can run 91 octane I live on a farm and we have 91 octane here to get any higher I have to drive 23km one way. It's stock and has 12.5:1 compression
  15. Will any newer plastics fit on my 2006 kx250f if so what year and what plastic is it ec front fender pic just cause
  16. Hello all, its been a while since I posted, felt sort of twitch today, so I thought I would post a visual story of the journey with my KX250f. I purchased this bike off a guy who had NO BUSINESS owning it. Rode it on the street (bald tires), plastics were completely jacked up, seat was barely hanging on. The topper was that it wouldn't start. So...I got the bike for a REALLY good deal. I always wanted a KX, so I had to jump on it. Mechanically, the intake values were WAY off, thus it not starting. While I was tearing into the bike, I went a head and replaced the piston, all seals, etc. The crank and bearings were good. Along with the complete cleaning, I wanted to bike to look amazing when it was done. I always find myself not only reviving a bike from it's bitter end, but I make it look so nice, that I consider never riding it! Yea, I know, I have a problem. None the less, it got a ton of cosmetic upgrades, etc. Thanks for everyone who helped me through the process. Especially, my family and particularly, my son JP who is learning more and more about motocross. I am completely in love with the DCorVisuals Lights Out graphic kit. The matte finish looks so amazing....Thanks Jeff N. for working with me on getting this kit made for my bike. I did the best I could in ordering the pics in the chronological order...the first 2 are showing the bike to me while I was talking with the seller. Cheers!!! If you have any questions, please post them here and I will try to answer them as quickly as I can.
  17. Hey fellas, first post on here. Just picked up a 1996 kx 125 last night, I took it on a trade for something I paid only 125 bucks for. So I couldn't turn it down. It is seized, so it is going to need a bottom end, jug looks to be okay, i mean it had has full fmf exhaust, renthal sprockets that are in great shape, boyeson reeds (unsure of condition of those) and it also came with a quick lift stand, so i didn't think I could go wrong. I have Been researching on this bike for awhile and I cannot find parts for it. Hardly any jugs, cases, and I can even find a new crankshaft, or a big bore kit. They have them for almost every year kx 125 besides the 96 and 01. I guess the biggest thing im wondering if any of these years of kx parts are interchangeable. im planning a total tear down (most of it is already) so I want to replace everything new. And if I cant get a new crank, I would like to purchase a couple to rebuild to have on hand. If someone could shed some light on this or give me any additional information I would really appreciate it!!! Ill be posting pictures and going to try keep everyone updated! I really appreciate you reading this! thank you
  18. Could someone tell me the dimensions of reed cage bolts for a 02 kx250? I can’t find any info online. Should I get fine or coarse thread?
  19. 2008 crf250r, in the process of finishing up a top end rebuild, and after installing the timing chain onto the cam I deciding to hand crank the engine slowly with the kickstart to see if everything was alright. There is a distinct knock that sounds like it is coming from somewhere in the cylinder each time I turn the engine over. What would be causing this sound?
  20. So I'm looking for some pivot levers for my clutch and hand brake on my '99 KX 250, I found these ones on amazon that say they will fit an '00 to '04 kx250, do you guys think these would fit my '99? if not do you know any that I can buy online, Im looking for green ones specifically, Thanks. https://www.amazon.com/MZS-2000-2017-2001-2017-2000-2005-2000-2004/dp/B01E6XQDFM/ref=wl_mb_wl_huc_mrai_1_dp
  21. Hey! My name is Kyler. So recently my bike overheated like 3 times, then finally one day it quit on me. After draining the oil, it turns out there's shredded metal everywhere. So I tore it all down. Now I'm not sure whats the problem. So far all that I found is the little rectangular reed valve was missing 1 out of 2 screws, and around that area down there is where I found the most of the shredded metal. also, I'm not sure if its a problem but the actual shaft on the crank has the slightest bit of play. Mainly I just don't know what to replace so please help! I don't want to put it all back together and not replace the main prob. Thanks in advance!
  22. Looking for some help. I bought this bike blown up, rebuilt and bought new parts and put it all together but used the clutch that came with it. The bike runs really good. I went for the first ride and few days ago after some heat cycles and was just putting around my yard. When I first set off the clutch was working as it should, smooth feel at the lever, no lurching as I put it in gear or anything out of the ordinary. When I stopped and went to set off again tho, the bike tried to jump as I put it in gear and then the grab at the lever was gone. The clutch won't disengage. Has anyone else had a similar issue? I have been reading and many people said this was due to the plates sticking or grooves worn into the basket. When putting mine together I used a diagram and am quite sure it is together as it should be and the basket is not grooved. Could this be due to the oil? I was using 10w40 Castrol, should I try some atf type f? It's like there is suddenly more space between the pressure plate and the plates, I don't get it
  23. I'm around 5'0 and I ride a ttr-90. Of-course it is wayyy to small for me anymore, and I've been looking at getting a new dirtbike. I was thinking of a kx-65, but I was looking into people saying they out-grow it too quickly. Anyways, I was thinking of a kx-80 too. Which would fit me better?
  24. so i can trade my 04 yz250f for a 2002 rm125 i ride mostly all trails. i am tired of my 4 stroke because it's nickle and diming me. i have a few questions about the RM. How is the reliability on 02 rm125/ Your opinions of bike Will the rm125 be easier to maintain than my yz250f? What problems will pop up on this bike or common problems, what should i ask the seller about the bike?
  25. Has anyone installed and used a Checkpoint impeller? I see dirt rider had an article about them and I've been curious about them. I've been having overheating problems recently and after spending well over $200 on brand new radiators I've discovered the radiators weren't the problem. So I bought new piston rings since they were out of spec (supposed to be like .15 and they were .5) and then thought about buying one of these aluminum impellers to help the problem instead of keeping the flimsy plastic one. I've read mixed reviews about them. Has anyone had any luck with them or is it basically just paying for the same overheating problems to happen?
