  1. What is the best coolant to use in my Honda CR 250 R? It’s a 2000.
  2. I’m looking to get a new ignition coil and wondering if these two are the same coil. is 33410-28H00 part the same as 33510-28H00
  3. Coming up on 10 engine hours of recreational track (somewhat sandy packed dirt). Just realized the manual says to replace rings at 6 hours and the while piston at 10 hours. I run a wiseco forged piston in my bike, allow plenty of time for warm up before ever hitting WOT, clean the filter regularly and run Castor 927 mixed 32:1. Also no exhaust bridge, heard that sometimes is an extra wear point but not applicable to my bike. Should I follow the OEM maintenance schedule or go longer since it's a forged piston? Form what I've gathered on a few posts, I might be able to got 30hrs on rings and 60hrs on the piston with new gaskets and a power valve cleaning at both intervals. Any thoughts or recommendations?
  4. Hey boys, so im half way through rebuilding my yz250f and i noticed this part on the ground and have no idea where it came from! please help a guy out, im worried it may be important! any input helps, thank you
  5. Hi All, I am in search for a lift/stand/jack solution to perform basic maintenance on my 2022 KLX 300SM. I have a paddock with hooks for spools (from my former bike) but I don't think spools can be installed. That stand also has soft pads to be used under swingarms but I don;t like the way they hold the bike -- the whole thing doesn't feel stable. I am considering two options: installing a centerstand from t-rex https://www.t-rex-racing.com/2016-2020-Kawasaki-KLX250-Adjustable-Center-Stand-p/n251-18csb2.htm purchasing one of the center lifts like this https://www.motorcycleid.com/kl-supply/mc475-400-lbs-lift-mpn-35-6364.html?singleid=1456689835&vehicle=181178 Any recommendations? Thank you. PS: The scope of work that I mean to perform would be to clean the chain, change oil/filter, possibly remove the wheels (both). -- Simon
  6. Hello. I recently bought a 2003 KLX 300. Bike is in great condition. As I do with all new to me vehicles I service them. This brings me to my issue. I went to flush and refill the coolant. The drain plug is frozen so I removed the water pump cover no problems. However when I did the nut that holds the impeller on fell in to my drain bucket. After inspecting I realized that the threaded shaft coming out of the engine case had snapped off. I can't find any diagrams online showing this part. I'm assuming I have to remove the engine cover to replace? Any guidance or direction is appreciated. Thank you!
  7. So here is the story. I picked up a 2011 KTM 350 xcf. When I got the bike it would start with the E start but it seemed like it was cranking over very slowly. Within the next week it started not cranking over unless I kicked the kicker down a notch until I heard the fuel injection engage then hit the button. Now I just hear a click when I press the button. So I went and picked up a new battery because this one seemed old and I just wanted to try that first. I put the battery in and it fired up right away. Seemed like it was working as it should. However, It only fired up like that one time, and since then I have not been able to get it to crank at all. I found some burnt connections from the voltage rectifier, so I cut and replaced them, I also replaced the rectifier. Still nothing. I just tested that I have power from the batter down to the starter, everything is good there. I don't know where to go next. Im thinking it could be a bad started but then the battery working right away is throwing me off. I charge the battery though and nothing works. Any ideas? It's driving me nuts! Thanks in advance.
  8. I've been on the forum since picking up a very good condition 2017 SM last fall, and read the posts in this area every day. This is my first bike of 14 (except an old track bike) that is carbureted so please excuse the question. Seeing how many have problems related to fuel delivery, is there an accepted wisdom on preventive carb maintenance (like replacing the various o-rings) even if no fueling problems exist? I run non-ETOH gas in all my bikes and live in a climate where they don't have to sit months on end without being ridden.
  9. Can someone tell me the manufacture specifications for valve clearances on a 2002 yz250f??!? I’ve looked some up and seen some videos but the more information the merrier right?? The manual I ordered hasn’t been delivered yet....
  10. Hey all, I recently bought a used 2019 YZ250F and when I pulled the oil strainer, I found a few tiny pieces of metal, and a larger chip (images attached). I know for certain that it has a fresh top-end, but I am wondering how good of a job the previous owner did. Is that chip something I should be worried about? I also discovered that the oil smelled like gas and was noticeably thinner than fresh 10W-40. If the bike floods it is not uncommon for some gas to enter the crankcase, right? I was trying to start it for a while in the cold when I first brought it home and I couldn't get it to fire for like 10 minutes, so I am hoping that is why. Thanks in advance.
  11. This summer I bought a 2019 CRF450R brand new. I rode every weekend all summer long and now that awful time of year where the bikes get put away and the snow starts to fly has come. I’m new with all of this and so I have a few questions about the maintenance I should be doing while the bike is down. I have already flushed the coolant with distilled water and added engine ice, I have done an oil and filter change, I have replaced the chain, and I have made sure that my sag is set to where it needs to be. Is there anything else I should consider doing over the winter to make sure that my bike is ready to go in the spring? Should I store it with gas, oil, and coolant in it? I know it’s probably dumb questions but I am very new at this and am trying to maintain my bike to the best of my ability. Thank you
  12. Hi all, I own a 2002 KTM 200 exc I have owned this bike for 1 year now and it has performed great! I have done general carb cleans / air filter clean & re oil etc. I want to carry out a thorough service on it for next year and I'd like some feed on the below tasks I plan to carry out which I'll detail in which I believe is the correct order! Feel free to help me add any additional tasks I should perform to make sure she's in tip top condition (short of buying a beta 300 RR which I'd ideally like to do) 1 - clean and strip. 2 - remove air filter, clean & oil. 3- swing up sub frame & drain carb. 4- remove carb, strip & clean 5- inspect reeds (have to figure out how to take the reed housing off) 6- cover reed housing if reeds are in good condition to avoid debris getting in 7- remove rear wheel, inspect bearing. 8- remove & clean chain & sprockets (replace if required) 9- remove hockey stick silencer & strip & re pack. 10 - remove front pipe and inspect piston? 11- inspect front fork seals (are they leaking? Replace if required) 12 - drain radiator fluid and replace with fresh coolant. 13- REASSEMBLE EVERYTHING. 14- Check top end compression (previously 180 psi - if below 160-165 consider replacement of piston & rings) 15- go for cruise to warm bike up. 16- once up to temp do a tranny oil change. 17 - happy days? What's your thoughts on this process for a service?! Thanks all !
  13. Hi, new to forum so apologies if this has been posted before i did search but found nothing. I was hunting for a maintenance/service manual and notice tons of sites selling them. Then I found this site which has them all listed for free! Hope this helps another owner out as it did me. https://husqvarnaoutlet.com/repair_manuals
  14. Hello everyone, I am a mid to upper level c rider in mx and currently have been riding a 2001 Honda cr250. Long story short I have been itching to try out a newer 250 four stroke. Must be fuel injected and I am hoping to find one with electric start. I have mainly been looking for a 2018+ crf250r or a 2019+ yz250f. My main concern with a four stroke is that I want it to last a long time before I have to do motor work. I am fully capable of doing full engine rebuilds so that’s not an issue. But what kind of hours can I expect on a top and bottom end on these bikes. my maintenance is extremely good. Filter and oil 5-6 hours. Air filter every ride. Keep stuff in good shape when I own it. Should I be worried about the horror stories that people have these bikes blowing up and grenading at 20 hours. I am mainly concerned with the reliability of a bike. This is why I like trusty old two strokes haha. Thanks for any information you can provide!
  15. New to the forum here. I've got a problem on my hands, and something tells me its an expensive one. Recently took a bit of a spill on my 2016 250L and dinged up the front end pretty bad. Unfortunately, my uppers on my forks took a bit of a beating, and now I have 0 small bump compliance. There are several dents on the uppers that seem to be hanging up the suspension from going through its travel. I know I can buy replacement OEM forks for somewhere north of $500. Are there any options for replacing the outer fork tubes? TIA.
  16. I bought a 2006 Mini Adventure (50SX) KTM for my son for his birthday. It has low hours on it, great condition (it seemed). When test riding it before purchase it started first kick when cold (choke on), and also re-started first kick when warm (no choke). My son rode it for a couple of hours a couple weekends ago, and it ran well. Started no problem cold nor warm. He killed it once and it took a few kicks to get it running then, but not out of the ordinary in my opinion there. We put it up (gas off) for a week, then this past weekend we couldn't get it to start. I drained and put in new 50:1 gas just in case it was old gas. I checked the plug, it seemed in order and when I hold it against the head while my son kicks it, I can see a spark (not sure if it's strong enough, but a spark none the less). Seems to be getting gas through the carb. But not 100% sure there. Looked like a little sediment in the tank, so not sure there might be an issue there (it was pretty low on gas when I drained it and put new gas in. The local shop here has a 4 week back log. I have an appointment set, but was wondering if you all had some insights on what I could try in the short term to see if I can get it started and/or what might be the (most common) issues for starting that I could look into that I've not already diagnosed (see above). Thanks much in advance!
  17. So I’m gonna buy a 1975 Yamaha YZ80 as my first bike just to kind of get an introduction into the dirt biking scene. I don’t want anything to powerful to start off with. I would have gotten a 125 but couldn’t find one in my price range. Anyway, I need a service manual for it cause I have no idea what type of oils this thing needs and how much the bolts need to be torqued down. I can’t find one on the internet so if anyone has one that they could possibly photo copy and send me that would be great! I know that Clymer made a manual for it but it costs money and I really don’t want to have to spend money if I don’t have too. If you have the 1968 - 1976 Yamaha 80-175cc Clymer manual could you please send me a photo copy? Thanks in advance!
  18. Hi all, I've just joined TT in the hope of educating myself, mechanically on dirt bikes. I apologise if I'm asking a repetitive question, I did have a look through 2 or 3 pages to see if this was a common topic. I'm 27 years old and started riding leisurely around 2 years ago on a 4/ 250, and have recently transitioned to a Beta RR 300, and started riding enduro. One of my main reasons for the transition was I have an interest in learning the mechanical side of the hobby, and learning to work on my own bike. I would describe myself as competent in the sense that I'm comfortable performing basic tasks such as oil/ filter change, coolant change etc. Over the last couple of days I've been searching the internet for material which will help me understand more, and while some youtube videos etc have been relatively useful, they seem to jump the basics and assume the viewer has a level of understanding, which I don't quite have yet. Does anyone have any advice on where I could look to find this info? Things I'd be keen to learn to start out are things like: oil gradients and the impact of them, general info on how 2 stroke engines work, the purpose of the main components, and maybe some common fault finding stuff? I do plan to continue to read my way through previous topics so I look forward to learning that way, but if anyone could help a brother out on wheres the best place to find this info it would be appreciated :). Thanks!
  19. Hey guys so im new to this website but I have a couple questions I would like to ask. So to get started I have a 2017 Honda Crf450x as a bike I use for trail riding through the woods. This was my first dirtbike and I still have not gone super fast yet because i have to learn it first. But my real questions are these. Must I replace the oil and air filter on my Dirtbike? I've found that the throttle response feels a little snappier if i take the air filter off so ive just been running it like that since there isn't really much that could get in it except for the loose dirt but i try not to kick it up much. And isnt the oil that comes in the bike from the dealer specially designed for the bike so that you dont have to replace it? Thanks and please help me with my questions as i want to do proper maintenance on my new bike.
  20. Have a 2003 BMW F650GS Dakar ABS - was left unused for 3yrs. Gas went bad. Have removed the gas, cleaned the tank, will be swapping out the pump, drained the lines up to the Fuel Filter/Regulator. Have concerns about running new gas through a filter that had the “bad” gas in it. Was surprised to find the replacement part could be as much as $175+ dollars. Is there anyone out there that might suggest a fix other than OEM part replacement?
  21. Just bought a 2000 KX 250 two-stroke for a great deal when looking for a project bike. When I put the bike in neutral which is a little hard to find, it jumps into first gear by itself and trys to takeoff no matter if I squeeze the clutch lever or not. When I first started the bike it basically did a burnout in my garage with no throttle applied and the clutch lever pressed then it just stalls out eventually this happened for about five seconds. Attached are some pictures of my clutch disk and clutch basket from what I researched today the basket should not look this bad , but do you guys think? Is the clutch the source of my problems or is it something internal and would I need to split the case.
  22. Hey guys I just bought a 2020 kx450 a month ago I have almost 10 hours on her already... never had a fresh bike so really looking for some authentic advice, mainly concerned with spike tightening... I tighten them until they’re snug is this okay??? They have zero play once I tighten them is this the way to have them??? Also I’m looking for quality knee braces to save my body in the long run lol who can recommend me any?? I am 6”2 with long legs... lastly when should I replace my top end 40 hours? Or push it to 50-60??? Thanks guys!!!
  23. Whats up guys. I have taken apart my 2000 Drz400 (kickstart only model, same as E) down to the frame because I am going to paint the whole thing. While it is apart, is there anything I should specifically check? Im mainly talking about the engine. Before it was burning oil regularly and I did find some metal in my oil. I think the metal is from my clutch or neutral because my clutch wasnt fully engaging and I didnt realize it for a while. Now my neutral "feels small" if that makes since. Lol I felt dumb when I realized the clutch adjustment got loose, but what can you do. As always thanks y'all. TLDR - took bike apart to paint. Is there anything I should look for specifically? Mainly refering to engine. Was burning oil and flakes in oil, but could be from user messing up clutch.
  24. I am thinking of buying a dual sport for commutes/trail riding and I have 2 models in mind but not sure which one would be better. Either a 2009 Yamaha WR 125R with 49,000km or 1990 Yamaha DT 125R with 63,000km (although engine rebuild last year). I can't decide if I want 4 stroke or 2 stroke. I'm aware that 2 stroke are much cheaper and simpler to rebuild, but the reliability of the wr 4 stroke engine seems very good. It also has EFI vs a carburator on the DT. I'm quite worried about engine seizing on the 2 stroke. Which one should I get?
  25. Hello fellow 2020 KTM 150 XC-W TPI owners! I am debating on whether I should purchase this bike over something else in the price bracket such as a YZ250FX. I am currently more interested in the 150 since it is lighter, potentially more fun/engaging, and the fact that I have never had a two-stroke before and would like to indulge in owning one. My main concerns though are maintenance and reliability. Since the TPI system is new for the 150, I don't know if it's financially applicable to purchase a bike with since it may be prone to failure. What I would helpful is if you could post your personal experience with KTM's TPI (specifically on the 150 XC-W if possible). Also, how does this system affect general two-maintenance such as top-end builds (how many hours I can put on a single top end with normal riding for a small bore two-stroke) and what kind of extra work is required to maintain the components that the TPI consists of? In addition to this, does the fuel injection system increase the wear of specific engine parts such as the piston or cylinder? Responses to these questions would be great! Thank you.
