  2. Hi there, Sorry if this is a silly question but I have just fitted a dg ehaust to my 74 cr125 and just wondered if any one elses is quite tight to frame and sump plug? If i push the front of the pipe against the springs (side to side) it can hit the frame and touch the sump plug. Is this right? Any advice or pics really appreciated. Thanks Kirk (uk)

  14. Hi Guys, wanted to begin riding dirt bikes but im not sure what to buy? Im 165 pounds 5"6 and have only rode quads before im not sure what dirtbike to buy. I was in between getting a crf150r or a 250 4 stroke bike i was told that 250 4 strokes are mostly just for the track and that they are difficult to maintain and valves could give me problems. i want to use them mainly for the woods but once in a while hit some jumps. If you guys could give me some recommendations on what to buy that would be great.

    yamaha dt125 dirt bike project?

    I saw a motorbike online that I liked the look of...It was a Yamaha DT125 MK2 with racing reeds, handguards, ect (picture below). I am thinking about doing something similar to take around a dirt track. There aren't many, but there are a few cheap DT125's in my area. I am also on a very small budget so this may be an on going project over the next few months or so, depending on how cheap I can get the bike for. The bike will only be used every 2/3 weeks when I take it to a dirt track, so I don't want to do too much to it, or spend too much money any way. What are your thoughts on this project? Do you think I should go ahead and do it? I am roughly 5' 11" but only 110 lbs, so do you think this bike would be too big, or too heavy for me? I just liked the idea of turning a road legal bike in to a trail type bike! Thanks

    colorado Riding Clinic

    Hey everyone this is Bryce Shondeck, my brother Cole and I are both professional motocross and off-road racers who have been teaching riding lessons and instructing clinics. The next clinic is November 17th in Fountain, CO. It’s at the Fountain Creek Riding Trails area where they race offroad races throughout the year. There is some open riding area as well as single track. We will be focusing on techniques that apply from moto to offroad and really trying to break down your riding and turn you into a more confident, better overall rider. Some of the things we will go over is body positioning, braking, cornering (sitting and standing), handling bumps and more. We have some some fun skills and drills that we’ll have you do that’ll test yourself and you’ll learn from. Fountain Creek is a great place to ride at in general and it serves very well for instructing clinics and teaching.   18. Hey guys, I am really needing some good advice here from anybody who has ever owned or rebuilt classic Yamaha 2 strokes (1989 - 1994). I live in South Africa, and bought a little farm thumper while on holiday this past weekend. It was advertised as a DT175 which is a bike that is easy to get parts for down here. It has been cosmetically customized and looks pretty darn cool... and lets face it, all the old classic Yamaha 2T engines look the same at a glance! So I genuinely thought it was a naked DT. The bike had no papers, and was used purely for the farmer to putt around on his farm. The only things needing attention was the stator cover which had snapped in half - this was visibly noticeable, and a little leak from a badly resealed gasket (both generally easy and cheap to fix here). The bike was still running and idling fine, started first kick, and I had a little ride around the farm before loading the bike up onto my pickup and heading off, thinking I could fix this thing up nicely in no time for next to nothing, and have what we call down in SA "a nuwe speelgoed" (A new plaything) for the weekends when I am not riding my beloved and reliable DRZ400SM. SO, I get home and decide to contact our local Yamaha branch, out of interest, to find out the history of the bike before I start fiddling (Don't ask me why I did not do this all before I bought the bike - It was a spur of the moment purchase, and was sold to me for dirt cheap!). I send off the VIN and engine number. Comes back, and this little freakin' turd turns out to be a 1989 TDR180!! WHAT. But now I am stuck as we do not really have TDR's down here - and I have never even seen one myself. Long story short - What alternative could I use as a stator cover? Do any other old Yamaha 2T model stator covers fit the TDR or share similar engine parts? Ordering from Ebay is so expensive thanks to my country being in junk status due to a junk president. So the shipping costs more than the actual item does, and our customs is a joke too. Yamaha has also advised me that this stator cover has been discontinued. I have put up local ads looking for parts, contacted FB 2T groups, and local shops. Nothing for TDR's has come back yet. Any advice or sharing of experience is welcome!
  19. I've been rebuilding/restoring an XR650R for some years now (after toasting the motor in 2013). Sent the motor off to be rebuilt, had a local shop rebuild my forks and shock, and took care of most everything else myself. As of a couple months ago I had almost everything assembled and ready to run. As a final check before adding fluids to the bike, I decided to stick my boroscope into cylinder and take a look. The results were concerning. These boroscope pics looked so gnarly that I pulled the head off the motor to get a more thorough look. To say that I'm concerned is an understatement. I have pics of the motor internals pre-rebuild, and can confirm that this is definitely a new piston and replated cylinder. I also have all the old parts from the motor, so it does have a new cam, connecting rod, valves, and basically everything else I expected to have replaced. The builder "ran the motor briefly to confirm everything ran alright" and then shipped it back to me. I reached out to him with these pics and he said, The piston looks like this because he had it machined from 12:1 to 11:1 compression. The streaks on the cylinder wall are normal for one that isn't broken in yet. Regarding the valve impacts in the piston head: "My concern is that something may have passed through the cylinder. How does it run?" I've never run this motor. I can feel these streaks in the cylinder wall with my fingernail. Did he re-use a piston from some other motor? Is this dude jerking my chain or is this motor fine to run? He's a fairly well-known builder in the XR community and was recommended to me by guys in the (now-gone) XR650R forum.

  21. This current fad of people going all ga-ga over KTM motorcyles is hilarious. Over priced, under engineered 'fashion' statement motorcycles are duping people left and right into this fake engineering game. Iv'e seen this same thing before with cars: Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, Maserati, Ferrari, Fiat, Lamborghit, etc, etc. Create a really stunning 'hook' of a machine, that everyone wants to own, then sell enough to figure out how to keep them from blowing up, and falling apart, hopefully by the next model year or two. Oh, don't get me wrong....Mercedes does make some really great cars. But MOST of the cars they make are not so hot. They are poorly designed, over priced, and un-reliable. Same with the other euro manufactuers. Fiat make several really great cars, like the 500. But all the rest are just garbage commerce. This is EXACTLY what KTM is doing. Throw 15 different models on the market, all based on old technology, but with shiny billet parts, or ultra-impressive specs, and see what happens. KTM is providing their customers with sub-standard quality and engineering on dozens of levels, selling it as 'high-tech' and then ignoring all the issues with oil starvation, throttle bodies, frames, triple clamps, shock mounts, CDI's, bars, brakes, rims, hubs, all failing, braking wearing out extremely fast, or in the case of motor internals, make them to such terrible tolerances that you cannot change broken parts with new parts, unless you buy the matching case it was machined to. I have never seen or experienced such CRAP sold as a premium brand in my life, accept Audi in the 90's and Maico in the 80's. I've owned (2) 2012 KTM's that both failed on several levels, that the KTM factory, KTM usa and my dealer could not resolve. I even had KTM USA tell me 'that's just the way it is with new bikes sometimes. We don't have an answer to your problem, sorry". My dealer was so frustrated that they now refuse to work on any KTM that has been modifed in the suspension, electronics, or motor, period, even out of warranty. They also will not replace any internal motor parts below the piston without replacing the entire motor, no exceptions. Yeah I know: ..... " My KTM is great, I've never had a problem with it" . Well good for you. You are in the 50% that actually get a 'good' one. Did you know that until recently (2010) KTM would and did make as many as 6 different gasket sets for one model of motor, depending on what portion of the year it was made? They actually look up gasket kits by serial number, because the factory produced a motor with so many flaws and failures that they had to upgrade the motor in the production line 6 times in one year....rather than just get it right and then push it on the general public. I talked to an KTM partially sponsered Enduro team at a D36 race in 2012 about KTM reliability, and this is what they told me: " Oh, we get 50-75 hours out of the factory motor, no problem. They run great, most of the time. Not quite as long as the Yamaha we used to run, but they are Ok. The real problem comes when we try to rebuild them. We cannot get a rebuilt motor to last 1/2 as long as a new one, because there are so many parts in the KTM motors that are stressed at 100% from day one, that the whole motor, not just the top end, wears out very fast". We try not to rebuild the motors, we just sell off the whole bike and start over with a new one." Hopefully, honest, non-Germanic companies like Beta and Sherco will take some of KTM's market share away. Long die KTM.

Literally hot off the press, the World Enduro Super Series, or WESS for short, has aligned with globally renowned events like Erzberg, Red Bull Romaniacs, Gotland Grand National and Le Trefle Lozerien to establish an eight-round series. Kicking things off with the Extreme XL Lagares, 11-13 May, the WESS will be a multi-discipline series with the aim of bringing together the world’s best and most visible events to find the Ultimate Enduro Rider. Organisers of the WESS state that they want to create a series which offers a full test of an enduro rider’s abilities, while at the same time meeting the needs of amateur riders by lifting the profile of the sport through mass participation events. Staged across Europe for 2018, the series will take in Extreme XL Lagares (Portugal), ErzbergRodeo (Austria), Trefle Lozerien (France), Red Bull Romaniacs (Romania), Red Bull 111 Megawatt (Poland), Gotland Grand National (Sweden), Red Bull Knock Out (The Netherlands) with one other race to be confirmed. For 2019 onwards there is already a strategic plan in place for international growth. Entries for each round of the series are made independently through individual race organisers. With an open style category, riders are free to compete on their preferred make and size of motorcycle for each event.
