  1. 2003 KTM 250 sx has no gear oil fill plug because previous owner put after market carbon fiber cover on right side need help because I'm pretty sure its low but I can't check nor fill
  2. Hello. My CRF450R 2011 have leaking (oil with coolant) from water pump drainage hole: I install new mechanical seal (7), oil seal (16) and new bearing (15): Filled new coolant and run my bike, all was fine, but after 15 minutes I got heavy coolant leaking: Disassembled again and noticed that "head" of mechanical seal is disconnected: What's can be wrong? Looks like problem with slight tightening (torque) (12 N/m) of impeller (part #6)? Sorry for my bad English.
  3. Hi guys ive got a big problem. ive had a 07 ktm 250 xcf for a while and it has worked great for me. Ive always kept up with maintenance and keeping it in good shape. But my problem is, someone recently bought it from me and he is saying it is losing a lot of oil through some big black overflow tube. I have no idea what overflow tube this could be. I changed the oil pretty recently before I sold it, I didn't follow the proper procedure of running the bike for 5 minutes then changing the oil. But I forgot and changed the oil while it was still cold. Does anyone have any ideas?
  4. Hi everyone, ive got an eighties PE 175 I’ve recently restored, which I’m running silkolene comp 2 premix which is ok, but I don’t think it’s really any good, although everyone raves how good it is for older dirtbikes. I was thinking of bel ray or Castro’s as I ran these on other bikes when I was younger ( more for the smell) I’m rebuilding the engine later in the year, and if it’s anything like the bodges I seen on the rest of the bike it will all need doing so I wanna run it something that wont kill everything. Thanks in advance
  5. https://www.amazon.com/Mobil-98JA11-10W-40-Racing-Motorcycle/dp/B004U8JH84/ref=sr_1_10?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1524178510&sr=1-10&keywords=amsoil+10w40+motorcycle+oil will this oil work in my drz400? if not what are some suggestions?
  6. Does anyone know the correct bolt size for the upper oil drain on a 93 dr 350s? I’ve tried a couple different sizes from parts stores and none seem to want to thread in. I’m not sure if the frame is stripped or the po changed the threads from what they were originally. Or I just keep purchasing the wrong bolt. This is such a simple thing that’s taking up a lot of mental space.
  7. Hey all, changed my oil today and like a moron I put a extra qt of oil. Once I started it, oil leaked out and make a mess.. I immediately turned off bike drained oil and put correct amount. Do I have to be worried about anything?? Any input helps! Thanks bike started fine second time. Going riding tomorrow hoping it’s all good
  8. Hey all. I came home from college this weekend to take my 2003 Kawasaki KLX400A (sister bike to DRZ400, just with far less intellectual resources available) for a spin. After sitting all winter the carb was acting funny so I took it off, disassembled, cleaned, reassembled, and reinstalled on the bike. Bike ran fine, so I headed down the road on it. When I got to a stop sign I noticed a strong smell of burning oil and smoke coming from the carb area. I then pushed it back home and started digging in. I saw oil covering basically everything behind the carb, all the way up to under the seat. There was no obvious sign of a leak that would cause the catastrophic quantity of oil covering everything. The bike starts, idles, and revs fine. When I have it running I do not see any further oil spray occurring. The only thing I saw askew was the breather tube that connects to the malleable “joint” between airbox and carb was disconnected (marked with an X on the diagram). This was likely due to me reinstalling the carb and either bumping it off or just forgetting to reconnect it. Any ideas as to what would cause this? Would the breather box shoot this amount of oil out if it did not see the correct vacuum from the intake? thanks!
  9. Hi, I have a 2008 KTM85 carb issue, for some reason the carb is filling with 2T oil with very little petrol with it. My petrol to oil mix is completely fine and when I take petrol straight from the petcock it’s a good mix. However there’s just oil in the carb! I have no clue on why this is happening, Any advice would be much appreciated! Many Thanks L
  10. Dear engine gurus, I have a 1996 KTM 300 EXC that is burning coolant and transmission oil I recently replaced the clutch side crank seal because it was puking thick white smoke. When I replaced the seal it significantly reduced the amount of smoke but now I believe it's burning coolant. Also replaced the water pump shaft seal, inspected the shaft and bearings, new impeller etc. New clutch side case gaskets. The bike does not leak a drop of oil or coolant when parked and filled up. The smoke now is white and sweet smelling, and when I start it up with the radiator cap off it bubbles and bubbles more if I give it throttle. I rode for about 3 hours yesterday and it was bogging and smoking on startup. It began to clear out after about 45 minutes of riding (probably when it burned out all the coolant) and then it ran crisp. When we stopped at the end of the day I had to add about 17-18 oz of coolant to fill it up and roughly 3/4 qt of oil. I plan to do a leakdown test this weekend. I have three main questions: The coolant bubbling in the rad and burning points to a blown head gasket or base gasket. Is this correct? Any other gaskets which could contribute to this? Bike appears to be burning gear oil still. Even after replacing the crank seal, but certainly at a lower rate than before. What other seals besides crank seal could be the cause? Is there a gasket which when it goes bad causes both coolant and gear oil to burn? Thanks and let me know if I can clarify anything.
  11. I have a 2000 kx80, that is leaking a lot of oil from the power valve. I attached a picture. Does anyone know what I can try to stop it? Thanks!
  12. Good day I have been having a problem with my spark plugs. Every 0.5-1 hour of riding the bike will begin to miss fire due to the spark plug insulator being cracked just below the electrode. (exactly the same everytime) The plug has some oil on it as, expected, but nothing close to causing oil fouling. 2018 ktm 250 xcw (carb) nothing has changed with the bike, the problem suddenly started at random. I have been through roughly 8 plugs (ngk br7es) and it continues, bike runs perfectly with a new plug until the it breaks once again. All jetting seems good and as I said this problem started suddenly and randomly as the bike had been running without a single problem since I have had it. a new piston and rings were installed at 60 hours and the problem still continues exactly the same. Thanks in advanced 50:1 oil ratio (moterx) as I have always 55 hours on 1 plug and then 8 within less than 10 hours??? this isnt my spark plug but the damage to the white insulator is similar
  13. I’m new to dirt bikes bikes, this is my first one actually. Like the title says, it’s a 2003 KTM 525sx (4Stroke RFS). My problem is that whenever I go to start the bike, when I kick the starter lever the crank case breather tube spews about a shot glass worth of oil almost every time. I’ve replaced the oil twice, sure not to overfill. I put the KTM recommended 1.25L and made sure it was not higher than a quarter of the sight glass when cold. Once the bike is running, the breather tube does not leak any significant amount of oil, only when kicking it started. Happens when warm or cold start. I did have one instance where I was running the bike and my clutch lever lost pressure, I would depress the lever and get no clutch engagement, but I let the bike sit for 20 minutes and the problem went away. I would greatly appreciate any advice, as I’m already in love with the hobby, but afraid I bought a lemon. Thanks in advance!
  14. Hey guys I have a really basic question. I am just curious about the oil quantity to put in my YZ450F after an oil change. The reason I am asking is because the manual says .64L (640ml) with an oil filter change which is what I have the last 5 times. I have never really checked the oil level real hard but after my last oil change I decided to and it showed up as being low. So naturally I added a little bit of oil until it was above the low line. In turn I now have oil leaking from my countershaft seal so it was obviously overfilled. Is .64L enough oil or am I missing something as far as checking the level?
  15. i have oil coming out of crankcase after rebuilding top end .oil level is correct but as i ride it blows oil out of breather hose any ideas ? please help////
  16. i'm having trouble getting an oil reading on the dipstick of a 2006 drz400e. i've tried running it for 3 mins then 3 mins off, ive tried warming it up then a 10 min ride, i can only ever get a tiny drop on the very bottom of the dipstick. i even tried this straight after doing a change, so i know theres at least 1.7 litres in there somewhere. in trying to figure this out, i've pulled off crankcase breather box, and found what looks like some crazy honeycomb rubbish in the air vent side. does this make sense and could it be causing my low readings? i'll be replacing the breather unit shortly, as i can't figure out a way to clean it, but since it was in the air side, i'm not quite sure if this explains my current issue. thanks
  17. so i bought a yz 250 recently and right off the bat after the test ride i noticed the clutch was a little sticky but it was a good price so i bought it anyway. when i took it apart today the first thing i noticed was that the oil i drained out of it was red, ATF right? i have heard of guys using ATF in their bikes so i didn't really think anything of it but once i got deeper into the motor i found it really hard to pull the discs out and that they would come out stuck to each other.. stuck together by the oil. the hub looks basically brand new and the basket has some wear on it but nothing real deep, at least not deep enough to hold anything together i think so was it the oil causing the clutch to be real sticky?? the shop manual recommend 10w 30 oil in it and after smelling it i know for sure that is not what came out. i just want some info on what this could be before i go out and buy a new basket... any info would be appreciated, thanks!
  18. So, I ran out of my last gallon of Rotella T 15-40 yesterday. So today, I mosey on over to Walmart and to grab another white one gallon jug for $13.00. To my surprise, the white jug is now called T-4 15-40 triple protection. It's still non synthetic, it's still in a white jug. It is still rated Jaso MA . Also there was the jug of T-6 Synthetic for $23.00 No thanks.. There was also a jug of T-5 Synthetic Blend. I almost bought that at $15.00 per jug, but on the back there was NO Jaso MA rating. So it must have friction reducers in it. Anyone know if the new T-4 14-40 is as good as the old T-15-40?
  19. My ttr90 is running well then all of a sudden it starts blowing smoke and stalling, I’m thinking that its worn rings or piston so I begin tearing apart to rebuild, as soon as I open the air box it just drops oil everywhere, the oil could of only came from the breather hose that comes from the crank case, when I checked the dip stick the oil was still a little over the line, I’m wondering if this can happen from putting too much oil, or if it’s from something more serious like pressure leaking into the crank case.
  20. Hi iv been looking at the forums for a few years and finally decided to make an account. I just took apart my 91 xr200r for the first time because of low compression (60-70psi) and i was scraping off the head gasket and some of it went into the stud/bolt holes. Im worried it will block the oil passage ways. Can anyone tell me how i should go about cleaning these out or can i just leave it as is (does not seem like a good idea). I also have some marks on the cam journals if that's the correct term and should i be worried about this. The surface is still smooth and i cant see it causing any friction. Any help or tips on reassembly or just any tips in general are greatly appreciated, thanks. Here is a diagram of the oil passageways i thought others might find help full .

  22. Hey Thumper guys - Looking for some advice .. I recently picked up a cherry 02 YZ250 with the intent on building for single track and off road ridding .. It's been a while since I've been on a smoker and forgot how much fun they are compared to 4-strokes ... The bike runs amazing but spooges like a SOB.. Any advice on where to go with jetting/pre-mix is appreciated .. Also important: the bike was purchased in AZ and was jetted for higher and colder elevations .. After messing with the jetting I adjusted to below and it runs amazing but just spooges like no other. Ive follow a few of the treads on here around how to dial in jetting and feel the bike runs perfectly, Super snappy of the bottom and rips on the top Here's current specs that should/can effect the spooge: 02 YZ250 = New Wisco Top end, JD Jet Kit, FMF Granrly Pipe & Turbine Core Silencer, New UNI Air Filter, NGK BR8 Iridium plug, MotoTassinari VFORCE3 Intake w/ Carbon reeds, new FMF Packing Jetting = Red JD Needle (3rd clip from Top), Main: 168, Pilot = Stock (50) Ridding conditions: Elevation= 1,500 ft .. Temp= 70 degree's Pre Mix= Motul 710 at 40:1 mix .. Originally ran at 32:1 per the owners manual but moved to 40:1 in hopes it would help but no such luck I know that i'm going to get some spooge due to not constantly being on the pipe but theirs gotta be a better solution to the mess i get .. I also don't want to go to lean and fry my piston either.
  23. Hello everyone, I just recently bought a 1994 WR250 Yamaha 2 stroke dirt bike. I had a TTR230 but I grew out of it within a month (go figure). I got a pretty good deal on the WR250. Needs a little cosmetic work but mechanically it seems to be fine. I went riding today to test it out and wow I was not expecting that kind of power. I really had to hold on tight when it hit its powerband. Of course, I am coming off a TTR230.. which I really like btw. It showed a tremendous amount of power. The front wheel was even coming up in 3rd gear! The only problem I see is it is leaking a lot of oil out of the muffler and especially leaking a lot where the silencer connects to the fat tube ( sorry about my terminology.. I am obviously new) lol. The guy I bought it from said he mixes a whole liter of 2t oil with 5 gallons of fuel. Could this be the problem?? Is that way too much? The guy was a trail rider a barely used the bike and didn't seem like he knew a whole lot about the bike. ( neither do I ). Do you think this is a fuel problem or jetting problem. I have read about the crank seal as well. I will post pictures of all the oil leaking. I really like the bike and this is the only thing I see wrong with it. Thanks for the help guys!
  24. Just serviced my 2015 YZ250F, noticed the oil looked thinner than normal, and on closer inspection found oil smelt of fuel. Being fuel injected how can this happen? Leaking injector? Anyone had the same problem?
  25. Hey guys, new here. I tried the search before doing this but didn’t find too much. Maybe I did it wrong. Well I currently have a 2008 kx250f I just did my oil change 2 days ago and realized the glass having a whitish look to it. Oil that came out didn’t look milky or feel weird though. Bike as been running great and I checked my coolant and levels seem to be fine. Also my crankcase hose has a milky white oil coming out after riding... the oil in the sight glass is fine though? I also checked to my head gasket. I was told I could check it by taking the rad cap off and start the bike to see for any constant bubbles. There was no bubbles besides some little ones and the initial start up but they went away quickly. What should I do?
