  1. Can someone tell me the manufacture specifications for valve clearances on a 2002 yz250f??!? I’ve looked some up and seen some videos but the more information the merrier right?? The manual I ordered hasn’t been delivered yet....
  2. Hey all! I’m getting a ssr 140tr bw in a week and I am going to get the valves adjusted. How often do I have to do this? I really am not looking forward to doing a adjustment every 15 hours. If I’m just riding in fields and just playing around on it, not hitting high rpms, what’s the longest amount of time before I MUST do it. Thanks to read and reply...
  3. Hi everyone, I have a new-to-me 2005 CRF230F. This forum has helped me several times in the last couple months, but I created an account this time as I was unable to find an answer to this question: I removed the timing hole cap and crankshaft hole cap. The problem I'm having is as I approach the T timing mark by rotating the crankshaft counterclockwise, it spins right past it. I go by the F mark and then about 1/2 or 3/4 of a inch before the line to the left of the T would be lined up, it spins right past. I tried using a screw driver with the socket on the end instead of a ratchet so that I could try to hold it on the T. I am able to do that, but as soon as I release pressure, it spins past. Any help would be appreciated.
  4. Hey all! I have a 2011 Gio X31 250cc that is losing compression gradually. It had amazing compression when it was new...but now it's becoming a tiresome task to kick-start when my electric start is down. It's burning a small amount of oil, but I don't even have to top it up between oil changes (~10 hrs. per change). I'm thinking it just needs a valve adjustment to bring the compression back up. I'm surprised how good this engine has been. I ride it hard and it keeps up with bikes 2-3x the hp and refuses to die! I don't know how to adjust the valves on a 4-stroke, let alone a Chinese one. If any of you know how to adjust the valves on a Gio X31 250cc I would appreciate the help! Do I need to pull the engine for this? Thanks
  5. Good afternoon, It's my first time doing a valve check. Can someone on here tell me if the Cam chain tensioner need to be removed before checking the valves? Meaning does it matter if the cam chain is tight when checking the valves? Thanks
  6. I recently bought a '97 XR250R that had a fresh top end rebuild. When I bought it there was a clear valve tick but I was told that they just haven't been adjusted since the rebuild (now doubting this info). I took the bike in to get the valves done and the guy said one valve was at 0.010 and the other had zero clearance. He was able to adjust them to the specified clearances but said that, since they were so far out to begin with, if they loose adjustment again it was worn lobes. The bike ran beautifully for 5-6hrs of riding but this weekend it wouldn't start. I was able to bump start it assuming it was just flooded. When the bike finally did start, there was a loud squeal as the bike stalled. This happened again after another bump start. After letting the bike sit for about an hour, it started 2nd kick but now there is a lot of valve noise again. Can this be related or is the squeal/stall and the sudden valve noise separate? I did a search on this forum and googled it extensively and I realise there's a lot already written up on valves and proper adjustment but nothing that sounds like what I have going on. Any input would be appreciated! Zack
  7. I have a 03 450 that I just got and it runs great! I love my bike and am big on preventative maintenance. I have searched the threads on TT and have not found any descriptive threads on how to check valve clearance or adjust them. Just by looking at them, I can see that the intakes need to be shimmed and the exhaust valves can be adjusted quite easily unless one needs to be adjusted differently than the other. I tried to do it last night, and lined up the marks on each side to get the piston to TDC to check adjustments and could not get any readings on tolerances on either the intake nor the exhaust. I moved the crank a little bit forward and got a .011 reading on the exhaust valves. I read in a thread that the spec was .011" for the left one and .014" in the right for the auto decompressor. The spec I am using for the intakes is .006" Are these specs correct? :excuseme:The only issue is that the adjustment for the exhaust valves is one and the same. Different from my KTM where you can adjust each valve individually. No matter where the cam was on the intake valves, I could not get any readings. Does anyone have a thread, website, downloadable manual, or article on checking and adjusting valves in these beasts?
  8. Hi There! If you're viewing this then you're either stuck in the same position as me, or you're handing down your well appreciated knowledge! First of all, I'm new to ThumperTalk, what a cool forum this is! But let's get to it; Kawasaki KXF250 2007... History: I bought this bike in January, it was a bit tatty, but I saw it as a brilliant bike to finally get into Motocross full time, rather than just messing around on friends bikes. So my Suzuki Intruder was sold & I went off to purchase it. Whilst out of action with a dislocating shoulder operation, I decided to pull the bike to bits and fix all the issues it's had. Now I'm a Maintenance Engineer, so as you can guess lack of maintenance can really bug me. So the whole bike has had a full strip down. I came to check the valve clearances & they were all out of tolerance, which explained why you'd struggle to start it & it wouldn't idle brilliantly. So the engine came out, I adjusted the valves via shims, which brought them all back into tolerance; along with an oil leak I cured. I was feeling pretty stoked by this point! So the engine went back in, the carb had a full strip down & clean, which was filthy, but now it looks like the inside of a watch. Diaphragm checked for any rips & tears, or pin pricks. All got loaded back into the bike for the first start. I turned the engine over by hand first to make sure I wasn't about to smash the valves into the piston. All good. Primed with fresh fuel, I tried to kick it over. Nothing. Second kick it backfired. From that point onwards it's not tried to even start. Ive checked all the usual suspects, good spark no leakage, it has fuel, carb seems all okay & doing its job. Timing is dead on, confirmed TDC by sticking screwdriver down cylinder & rocking the crank. All earths are spot on too. Now im seriously puzzled, it has everything it needs to fire, but it's not even trying. Any advice, help & ideas would be brilliant so don't hesitate to fire anything across! Cheers guys, Nick.
