  1. I noticed some oily residue on the bottom of my case below my water pump, checked coolant level and it was just as It was when I refilled it last. I followed it as best as I could and it appears to be coming from the rubber gasket on the bottom on the power valve what does this indicate??? Again it's a very slow leak nothing is dripping I just noticed oily residue.
  2. It is entirely possible (or probable) it is me, and I am also breaking in new boots, but on my new 2018 YZ250X, I am finding my shifts to 3rd sometimes result in -- much to my chagrin -- still being in 2nd. And on a few occasions, when my attempted shift to 3rd has left me still in 2nd, even a hard pull up on the shift lever is not resulting in the shift to 3rd. Anyone else experiencing this problem? If so, any tips?
  3. I've read here and there about regular greasing and lubing on the YZ250 / YZ250X, as well as noted the recommendation in the manual (same manual for both bikes, see image), though I do not think it consolidates all of the grease and oil points into one checklist, hence this post. As a sort of newbie getting back into dirt bikes after a long time (as a kid I only fixed things after they broke), plus being new to the YZ250 platform, I'd appreciate any suggestions one what you grease or lube and how often (and maybe even with what product). Thanks!

  6. ok so im at a bit of a crossroad. bear with me on this its kinda long. I just bought an 01 yz250 and its been treating me really well except the sprocket somehow lost some bolts and they eded up cracking my rear hub while i was riding. long story short im just going to replace both of my front and rear wheel setups with the tusk impact ones link: https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/3636/42645/Tusk-Impact-Complete-Front-Rear-Wheel-Kit?v=1620 here is my issue: i pretty much only trail ride and i do not race so my bike is woods bike only. I just purchased a maxxis maxxcross it rear tire in 120/100-19. is it worth going from a 19in wheel to an 18in and buying another tire? id have to seel the on ei have and deal with that and buy an 18in maxxis tire. in my situation, would anyone recommend i stick with the 19in setup or is it worth the hassle to stitch to 18in. thanks for being patient!

    2002 yz250 surging at idle

So my new to me 2002 yz250 has started giving me problems. The bike is mostly stock except for an fmf gnarly and 182 main jet. Previous owner never really rode it so didn't do much maintenance if any on it. It ran great on my last ride but the other day I started it up without a problem but immediately noticed it was surging at idle almost like a miss and was idling just a tad high, lowering the idle would help but it was still surging. Took it for a ride down my street and noticed a hesitation from closed to 1/4 throttle but ran great past that. I went back home and tried messing with the air screw which didn't help the idle, it started dripping coolant out of the overflow so I decided to shut her off. Now I'm Amost certain it's an air leak and know I need to do a leak down test but I haven't gotten around to making one yet. This is only the 2nd 2stroke I have actually worked on so any advice would be great. I was hoping someone else has had similar symptoms and could point me in the right direction. Really hoping it's not my crank seals as the last case I split was such a headache and I never got it going again. Help me I'm poor!!!
  9. Brand new OEM piston has this small "dent" on the leading edge. Top of piston not smooth where you see the defect, sort of pushed up slightly, enough to feel with fingernail. Also you can see discoloration all around the defect, both on top and on front of piston. Would you use it or get RMATV to exchange it for another? I don't want to use it like this, especially with this defect running over exhaust port. Just want to see what others think and not overreact. What do you think?

    Yz 250 swaying idle

Good evening guys, I have a problem with the idlespeed of my 08 yz 250. When the bike is cold the idle is constandly up above normal speed, if it gets to operrating temperatue the idlespeed hast somesting like a step when the engine rewing down.Afte about 8-10 seconds the idle drops below normal speed. things i've checked/ changed: -Airfilter -checked for sucking in air from outside carb. -cleaned carb -brought carb to stock adjustments ( needleclip, airscrew 1 turn out) -reeds checked -crank seals done today -piston is about 10h's old A big confusement for me : pilot jet is #50 ( stock is #52) and the bike is still running too rich when reving it from the low ildespeed. does anyone have an idea ?

    Top end problems

Help. Burned up piston on 2003 YZ250 2stroke. Ride at Glamis in sand. Lost compression going up Oldsmobile. run 40:1 mix pilot jet 50 air screw 1 turn out. Main jet 182 with needle clip in middle 3rd notch. Stock exhaust appears it was still to lean. Ate piston on exhaust side rejet or do I have bigger problems? Don't want to lose another top end. premix ratio ok?
  12. Been experiencing a bit more plug fouling lately and a little bit less go in the motor of my YZ250 (2005). I've suspected it had leaky seals for a long time, even though it passed the leak down test. My understanding is that seals can check good when the motor isn't running but leak at specific RPMs. Top end with new cylinder has about 6 hours on it but have had an issue of fouling plugs with excellent jetting since before doing the top end. Today with a warm engine I get lots of smoke at WOT and she isn't running very well. Below that it's pretty good. Can't say positively leaky seal is the problem, but I've wanted an excuse to change them for a long time and am finally committed to getting it done. First time for me, so looking forward to learning something new. QUESTION: What parts will I need? Gaskets, bushings? I'll follow the manual, but just looking for tips and tricks. I do have a bearing puller tool (claw looking beast). EDIT: Will definitely run a compression test before I do anything.

    Spark Plug Shorting

2006 yz250 keeps blowing plugs. I typically get about an hour out of a plug. Thought it was jetting at first but was unable to resolve it. I have been doing ohm tests on the plug and have just discovered that there is a short in the plug. 53.2 ohms between positive (top tip of plug) and negative (threads). On a new plug there is no continuity between these at all. I tried replacing the coil but it has not made a difference. Any ideas?
  14. I own a 2013 Dodge Challenger and I want to find the best and most economical way to transport my yz250. I would only need a setup for one bike, but I do not want to run a wheeled trailer . What would be the best way to go about it , factoring in clearance issues . Any suggestions appreciated . Thanks
  15. Doing the top end on my 2009 and noticed this symmetrical wear. I think the parts are fine but I would like a second opinion. By the way the bike was running absolutely perfect when I dissembled it, was just due for a check-up. Thanks

    2001 YZ250 Rebuild?

Anyone out there that rides 2 strokes... YZ250 compression test came out at 215. I've had the bike coming on 2 years without a rebuild.. purchased used for $1450, original owner claims new top end just prior to sale. Not really sure how many hours on the piston.... but it's not like I never ride... seems a long time on the current top end kit to still have strong compression.. any thoughts? Should I rebuild anyway? I used to race as a kid and I felt like I went through top ends on my YZ125 left and right back then.
  17. I've been working on my suspension for my yz250 2015 for sometime now and i thought i got it really close to what i was looking for. I've must have revalved my forks about 10 times trying different floats and stacks, springs. Then i got a great deal on a yz450f with modified suspension and my idea of god suspension totally changed. This is by far the best suspension I've tried, and I've had öhlins and other top of the line stuff before. So now my dilemma... I´d like to modified my yz250 suspension to feel and behave as close to my 450 as possible. I measured everything in my 450 stacks last service and to my surprise the mid valve was untouched... Maybe someone can assist in this matter, not really sure how to transfer this info, perhaps someone can put it in restackor? I can post the stock yz250 stack if you guys need it. 1994 yz250 compression

I've been workin on the bike trying to figure out why it wont run right. Finally took it to a guy to have him look at it. He said he couldn't get it to run so he checked the compression on it and said it was around 40. He said i need a whole new cylinder. Could it be piston ring or maybe cylinder head? Just wanting second opinions before putting this much money down.

    Yz 250 2010 swingarm question

Hey Thumpertalk! First time posting here but been reading forums for a long time. I am looking to buy a new swingarm for my 2010 yz250 since the previous owner hadn't changed or greased the bearings since 2010 (bought it last year). All the pins in the bearings were out, making the collar grind through to the alu and make the hole where the bearing sit oval. Also he has welded the swing in one place due to a crack. Funny thing to discover huh, I just thought my suspension was a little on the hard side . So what I am asking is what swing arms will fit? As I understand it from reading alot of older threads on this forum and others 2006- yz 125/250 swingarm 2006-2008 yz 250/450 swingarm wr250f 06-13 wr450f 06-15 Would all fit, but they have diffrent part numbers for diffrent years eg 06-07 yz 125/250 and 08+ and I am wondering what that means? I think I read somewhere that it was due to change in the chain guide mount or something? Is the geometry 100% the same? Must fit with the brake and everything but I think that's fine. If anyone know 100% I would be really happy ! Thanks

  21. Hello all! First post on TT... be nice! I'm buying myself a new dirtbike - and I'm stoked. I haven't had a bike for 6 years, I'm now 22 with a fairly good job so it's time to treat my self. But I've been having a difficult time deciding on what kind of bike. I've got it down to a Yamaha - YZ250X, YZ250FX or maybe even a WR.... I'll be doing strictly woods/trail riding. About a 50/50 mix of tight woods/open logging roads. I'm also currently teaching my girlfriend how to ride! We picked her up a 2014 DRZ125L the other day, so the catch is I'll need to be able to putt slowly enough to stay nearby her... The last two bikes I've had in my riding days were a Suzuki RM250 and a Yamaha yz250f, and loved them both. I'm fairly neutral on 2 stoke vs 4 stroke (maybe someone will help me decide). The other thing is, I don't NEED insane amounts of power. I can't afford to hurt myself... lol. That being said though, if I come across a gnarly hill - you know I'm going up that sucker. I loves hills lol. What do you guys think? YZ250X? YZ250FX? Or should I be looking at something else? Cheers. - Ryan

    Carburetor joint replacement

So I just bought a 1997 yz250 and it had a busted carburetor joint so i ordered a new one from motosport. I was able to bolt it onto the bike fine but the issue i am having is that the carburetor doesn't want to sit in the carburetor joint and the air cleaner joint. Do you usually have to put some force into getting it situated in between the two? if i clamp it into the carburetor joint it is a good inch and a half above the air cleaner joint making it impossible to secure it into both joints.

    PLEASE HELP 1983 YZ250

hey there I've got a 1983 yamaha yz250. this is my first bike and I'm the third owner. the second owner i bought it off off believes the engine was rebuit because the motor pulls stong he says. by the time i pulled up to his house the bike wouldnt start and he said the carb is really clogged up and its been sitting for 8 months. i managed to get him down pretty low so i bought it. $460 CAD so this is the problem. i got my friend to clean the carb since he knows how and it took him about an hour. we then put it back together. we completely drained the fule and went and got premium fuel and i think we used a 40:1 mix ratio. we also flushed the coolant and replaced that with new coolant. we then tried starting thr bike and it didnt start. we thought maybe the engine was flooded so we took out the spark plug and it was wet. sl we dried out the engine and then tried starting it again. it started after about 30 or 40 kicks while holding full throttle. at this point it was about 9pm and we were tired. we drove it around in first gear killed the bike and gave it two kicks and it started up. we then shut off the fuel while and let the bike shut off so we dont flood the engine again. a week later we go to work on it again cause the idle wasn't the best so we cleaned the carb completely, put it back on and it took about 30 mins of me and my friend taking turns kicking the bike to start it up. once it started up we let it warm up gave it a few revs amd then went onto drive it. im new at dirtbiking so i stalled it. gave it two kicks right away and it started we drove it on my street in first gear only and brought the bike back. i stalled it coming to a stop but then gave it 1 kick right away and it started up right away. i then let it idle for a few mins then i stalled trying to move the bike. i was talking to my friend for about 1 minute and kicked it again and it didnt start. we had to spend another 30 minutes kicking it to start it again. and once we started it we did the same thing. drove it then killed the engine and gave it two kicks right away and it started. after that we killed it waited 1 minute and it wont start again. so basically once the bike is started after an exhausting amount of kicks. u cant shut it off for more than one minute or it won't start again... yes the bike has compression. brand new fuel. brand new spark plug i got it the same day it took alot of kicks to start it. also we tried starting it with the air filter off incase it was dirty but its pretty clean. any help at all will be appreciated and i hope u guys can help me fix this! thanks for your time

    Crank Bearing And Seal

Hey guys. I seem to be having a problem with my wet side crank seal leaking. I get a really bad smell from my exhaust and keep getting ash build up on my spark plug. So I pulled the right side cover off and found out that the bearing got some play in it (left side is still good). When I wiggle it around I get some air bubbles where the seal meet the crank shaft so I think that's where it leaks. I am having a race in 10 days and won't have time to split cases before that. Do you think I can just put a new seal in and it will hold tight for atleast a couple of hours or will it also leak you think?
