    Yz250F won’t start

I bought a YZ250F yesterday and the previous owner said apparently it runs but they weren’t strong enough to kick it. I couldn’t kick while there so I took their word for it and bought it. I’ve been trying to get it to fire all day today, there are 2 chokes and I’m unsure if the air mixture is correct, so would be nice to know what I should do, it’s hard to adjust the air screw when the bike won’t even run. I noticed the spark is kinda low, I don’t know if it’s normally supposed to be like that or not. I can see a blue spark but it is very small and crappy, I’ve had thumpstars that generated stronger spark, I changed the plug it’s still the same, so maybe could be an electrical problem, the only ground connection I could find was for the ignition lead which I filed down to bare metal so I’m pretty sure that connection is good. Anything else I’m missing? It’s very hard to kick and I can feel the compression out of the exhaust so I don’t think compression is the issue.Just wanna know what I should do, haven’t owned a yz before so I could be not using the choke right or something. Thanks
  2. i have an 03 yz250 that i just put a new top end on. it was dropped in the mud while running and the kid kicked it over 100x to try and start it and wore the rings flat. it starts and runs fine for about 20-30 seconds and then the idle starts to get higher and wont come back down, if you give it throttle it will die out. i just went through the whole carb, cleaned the reeds, unplugged the tps and im out of ideas at this point. if you give it some throttle it will rev and then hang but after about 10 seconds come down and surge and the process will repeat every time you give it some throttle. i have 100 octane mixed 32:1 for fuel. any ideas would be appreciated

    Clutch problems

Hey guys, jut did a bottom end on my 04 yz 250, and the clutch won't engage. What I mean by this is it will start in neutral, and once I drop it into first (with the ever pulled) it stalls out. When I depress my clutch lever the actuator is fully engaged, so I don't see that being the issue, I've read that sometimes after you take out or put in clutch plates they stick because oil hasn't flowed through the plates all the way yet. I'm at a loss, any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance
  4. Well the iggornant 17 year old that I am decided to rip the carb off without checking the service manual first for proper removal of the TPS connections. instead of discounting the connector at the wire harness I unscrewed the torx head screw to remove the whole thing. When I put it back together I noticed I wasn't getting the normal amount of power. Kinda suspected I didn't get somthing right in the carb. So I took it back off again the same way I took it off and double-triple checked my work and still had the same issue. So after further research in the manual I noticed that it said removal of the TPS was a no no cause it would result in loss of power. Is there a proper way to reinstall the tps sensor? I've searched numerous times on the topic of install but could never find a direct awnser. Any help you could give me would be appreciated thank you! I can awnser any questions you may have
  5. Just wanted to share a video I saw recently of some guys riding their two strokes. Videos like this help me get through the winter haha!
  6. I'm reading up on these.. Anybody have one?Can you compare it to a Gnarly or a Fatty for a YZ250 or 250X?
  7. Let's race! Post your loop times, trail head to trail head or loop to loop. It's honor system, but feel free to post video or tracking screen shots. Here are the categories. Even if you don't want to compete, still useful for folks to see this info. So please post what you got. We have a fantastic resource at Wambaw, so it's important to have an active community that we can mobilize if we need to. WHICH LOOP: South Loop, North Loop, 5 Mile South Loop, 15 Mile South Loop, etc. NET TIME: BIKE: TRACKING SOFTWARE: How did you track your time and speed? Recommendations for good software. Tips for analyzing, etc. AVERAGE AND MAX SPEED: You may have to do a little math to get correct average if you start your tracking software before leaving the parking lot or don't turn if off when you return. Just use distance divided by time and you'll have the correct average. AVERAGE AND MAX HR: TRAIL CONDITIONS: WEATHER: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'll start us off. WHICH LOOP: South Loop (trail head to trail head) NET TIME: 48 Minutes (fast for me) BIKE: 2005 YZ250 TRACKING SOFTWARE: Used Wahoo Fitness app then exported as "FIT" file to my PC. Opened it with RideViewer, a great free visualizer for those who don't own one. Didn't have my heart rate monitor or there would be a lot more info on there. I usually average HR of about 150 and max out a few times at 180 (probably restarting the bike after a get off). Amazing how taxing picking up and starting a bike can be if you already cranking out energy on a nice run. AVERAGE/MAX SPEED: 23.57/55.3 mph AVERAGE/MAX HR: 150/180 TRAIL CONDITIONS: Smooth except for power lines, which are whooped. Trail just groomed about a week ago. Sandy and dry. WEATHER: 80 degrees, dry and clear, beautiful spring day. A few people on bikes and quads (on a Friday) Short 3-minute video. Pilot circuit is slightly rich, but bike running great.
  8. Well guys I messed up. When I first got the bike to rebuild I was told it was a 91yz250. Turns out it is actually a 89yz250 which I found out part way through my build. No biggie right? Well I forgot when I got my crank redone I used a 91 yz250 connecting rod.........These rods are 5mm shorter than the stock 89 yz250. So now my engine is fully rebuilt with zero chance of ever running since the pistion falls a full 5mm short of the top of the cylinder at TDC. My questions is where do the 90-94 yz250s lose their 5mm to use this shorter rod? I know the piston doesn't make it up with a 5mm higher deck...I currently have wiseco on a wild search to find any and all pistons that could potentially work on my now half torn apart Frankenstein engine. Does the 90-94 make up for the shorter stroke in the cylinder or in the cases? I know the clutch cover changes to the two piece style in either 90-91 but was doubtful that would have anything to do with the shorter stroke. See the build progress below since it isn't all doom and gloom and has been a fun project.

    YZ250X first top end questions

Hey gurus and especially YZ DOC Doing my first 2 stroke top end, bike has 110 hours, 40-1 yamalube 2R. 90% singletrack and trail riding in Colorado. How does this cylinder and piston look? I'm replacing the piston and little end piston pin and bearing. Normal wear? Looks like the PV was wearing on the piston a little but the jug looks good. Replace piston and ride? Or should I worry and/or do more? Thanks for any helpful advice!

I took my pipe off the scrape some mud off the engine below the exhaust port that I couldn't get to with the pipe on it sat with the pipe off for almost a week in my garage I just put the pipe back on went to kick it with the choke on and it kicked four times and now the kicker is locked in place mind you it was running flawlessly before I took the pipe off I have no idea what would cause this to happen I'm absolutely stumped. 07'yz250
  11. Hi Everyone! First post although I have been reading and enjoying for a long time. I came across this post today, and thought I would use it as a test case to learn what people's thought processes are as they evaluate a potential restoration project https://goldcountry.craigslist.org/mcy/d/1998-yz250-yamaha/6521904558.html From what I see, this is either a 1998 or '99 YZ 250. The year is significant because the motor changed between the two years. The tall bars and cut airbox lead me to believe that it belonged to some sort of Freestyle MX person in the past. Stock pipe and black (painted or aftermarket?) wheels are other clues that I can see. Long story short, what would you pay for this bike, and what other clues would give you the most idea of what you are in for? I see a $1000 full motor rebuild, $150 silencer, $250 for plastics, $50 for a new air box, and probably another $3-500 in misc bearings, chain, sprockets, front tire etc. Assuming that I would enjoy the rebuild process and resulting bike, would you pay anywhere close to the asking price for this thing?

  13. Hey guys, I picked up a set of 06 YZ250F forks and they'll be here next week. I read other threads on it, but most are for the steelies. Can I simply use the same triples with no issue, or do I need 250F triples and steering stem? Also, is there anything different between the current AOSS fork lugs and the SSS ones or will everything mount right up? Thanks for reading!
  14. Hi, I'm thinking about picking up a Lectron carb for a 06 YZ250 2 stroke. I'm seeing somewhat mixed reviews. Some are saying it's better then sliced bread and others can't seem to get it to work. So... before I jump into it.. I want the real scoop from folks that have put on on and ride with it. 1. Is it better? Better throttle response? Crisper... an improvement? 2. Or did it not perform better? 3. Did you by a 36 or 38?? Honest real world performance opinions please!
  15. 2 Stroke Winter Jetting

Just bought a 2007 YZ250, my first 2 stroke. Want to stud the tires and ride it through the winter. Elevation is about 300m above sea level. Temperature ranges 0 to -20 degrees Celcius. What should I jet it at for these temperatures? Do I change needle position also? Not sure what current jetting is, oil ratio is 32:1 and tons of spooge out the exhaust pipe. Thanks!

    Is my bike pinging?

So I went riding this weekend and bike was running good but on a long straight away I noticed a brief knocking noise. The noise occurred after a wide open run in 5th gear down straight away. After the bike topped out I got off the throttle and was flipping the throttle just to keep the cylinder lubed up. About the second and third "throttle blip" I heard a very audible knock in the engine. I'm not completely sure what the noise was but it sounded very similar to rod knock in a car. Only did it those two times and at very low throttle opening. I got back into the power-band and the noise went away. I did mix a gallon of fresh gas with some gas that was about 3 weeks old so I'm hoping it was just pinging but I'm thinking it could of also been piston slap or rod knock. After the ride as I was letting it run out of gas I did notice the engine seemed a little noisy but it seems that is common on the yz250. Does this sound like pinging or is my old engine getting tired?
  19. 2003 YZ250 ridden at Glamis in sand with paddle tire. burrned up piston going up Oldsmobile hill. I run 40:1 mix. Pilot jet is 50, main jet is 182. Am I still too lean?
  20. Hi all, first time posting. Have read many, many posts. Im buying a used bike and have maximum $3500 to spend. What should I get? Last bike I owned was a 96 rm250. Bought bikes for my kids beginning of last season now looking for mine. I'm 40yrs old I used to race motocross (novice) but have been out of the scene for 15 years. Plan on riding with the kids and occasionally hitting a track. Torn between 2 stroke & 4 stroke & year & mfr. thanks in advance for opinions.

Yz250 Build , need help on wheels

CANT FIND A STRAIGHT ANSWER ON FORUMS , NEED HELP NOT SMART ASS COMMENTS Background - cool weather has me motivated on doing a ground up restoration on my 97 yz250 , last year I fully restored my first bike that got me into the sport a "1993 yz125 " . Just like my my build last year It seams Im stuck with the bastard children of Yamaha , parts are hard to find and seems to be little or no aftermarket parts. I have already spent well over $1,000 on this yz250 in plastics , custom graphics , asv levers , custom gas tank , exhaust and other crap so the most cost effective way would be best lol. I'm wanting to change the look of the bike with black wheels , rims are 160-220 each depending on brand . spokes are 60+ each set and labor is about $200 locally to lace and true . I have searched high and low on forums and google haven't found a single aftermarket set that fits a 1997 everything is 99+ Question - I have found a newer set of wheels https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/1071/42645/Tusk-Impact-Complete-Front-Rear-Wheel-Kit what do I need to make these work on a 1997 ? I know my hubs are 20mm and 99+ have 22mm. if you could help with part numbers or links on what I need. Here is what I'm going for ( top pic ) the one below are my progress , frame goes to power coating tomorrow
  22. my yz250 will idle good and through 3/4 throttle runs alright, not very responsive though. once i get to 3/4 throttle it will start poppin real bad and wont rev any higher. im thinking the main jet is too big, main jet is 340 and pilot is 40. im very new to 2 jokers (my first 2 stroke). it has the mikuni TMX btw. i have checked the reeds and they look great.
  23. **I know there is already 5,000 posts on this and I am sorry, I just couldn't find what I was looking for** I am looking to but a restyled plastics kit for my 05 yz250, and getting a graphics kit from DeCal works put on it. I know there are 5+ types of restyle kit brands, and decal works said to get the polisport, and then select the '06 yz when I am getting graphics for it. my main question is, is my only option to get a restyle kit that makes it look like a '15? or is the '15 look the same as say a '18 look. and can someone just help me confirm that the current plastics I have on are stock/non restyle thanks in advanced, I know this subject gets beat into the ground.
  24. Sitting here on a flight jazzed about my new YZ250X and to satisfy my desire to get riding on it soon, I'm reading the owner's manual (same as with the YZ250 also), only to discover, wow, they recommend some serious break-in procedures. It is making me nervous I should have bought the FX if this level of maintenance / inspection is required. I suspect it is not, hence this post seeking real-world experience from others. Worth noting: I have no intentions of "racing" ... just fun riding trails and amateur MX tracks with my two sons. Per the attached images from the manual, here is what really stood out for me and which I question: First, though not as unreasonable, is the running, stopping, cooling, checking the spark plug, and repeating that for increasingly higher engine output (though it doesn't say what to do if if results are not as should be). Does anyone recommend following that procedure? Or just go ride the dang thing? (not sure my boys would survive waiting for me to perform this procedure LOL) Second, and seemingly far more involved, is pulling the head to check the piston and using wet sand paper to remove any carbon deposit. Should I really do this? And if so, does pulling the head require changing the cooling fluids? (not sure if the cooling fluids circulate inside the head or not)...or replacing any gaskets? Thirdly, the scheduled maintenance suggests inspecting the piston every 2.5 hours. Granted, that's under racing conditions, but even still, my plan was to check it closer to never, other than perhaps an end of season inspection or something. I had RM and KX bikes as a kid and did none of these things. Maybe I was naive. I could go on and on about some of the other inspection suggestions they list, but I suspect opinions on these will inform the others. Thanks!
  25. Hey guys, Im looking to buy a new Yamaha 2 stroke within the next couple weeks but i cant decide whether i would be happier with the 2018 yz 250 or the 2018 yz250x. Heres my riding background. Ive been riding for 15 years, I raced in the A class for 5 years until money got tight and i gave up racing all together. Since i then I realized how much fun single track riding is and just free riding with the buddies. I still occasionally ride tracks but about 80% of my riding is trails. I live in Michigan and if you have ever ridden in Michigan then you know the trails can get as rough as a motocross track. My local trails have sand whoops that i would compare to REDD-BUUUDDDS sand whoops. Ive never owned a "trail" bike ive always taken my race bikes and made them into "trail" bikes. My last bike being a Yz125. That being said i know all the mechanical and technical differences between the 2 bikes. Im a bit worried that the 250x just wont have the racey feel when im riding. Im also worried then when i do take it to the track the suspension will be a bit soft and the mellow hitting powerband will not allow me to seat bounce the big whoops. But now the standard yz250 might not have enough low end to help me skate through wet black slick dirt and the suspension might be a little to "non responsive" per say in studder bumps. Can you guys give me any sort of guidance. If you would like to check out my riding style on YouTube check out : "Yz125 2 stroke Shredding Michigan Enduro Trails." Thanks Guys
