new 2021 Xr650l, threw a fritzco sprocket (kept the 15t) it’s great on and off trail. Plus pro taper atv highs SE (7/8) ., looking for a good tank, leaning towards acerbis. But Haven’t seen much of the ims. Also what other mods could we make to improve the longevity of the bike? this bike is only for off-roading and the occasional John Conner rips ? thanks!

KTM 400 MXC-RFS KTM (Kronreif & Trunkenpolz Mattighofen) 400 MXC (Motocross/Cross Country) RFS (Racing Four Stroke) OKAY, after 2+ Years (Presently 7-25-21), IT Finally Happened PICTURES of the ACTUAL BIKE! I will get a picture up as soon as possible. The picture of the XR is just for the Seal Savers Review. After many years of laborious labor of love upgrading my 1981 XR-200R and trying to stuff it into a 00' YZ-426-F frame, My loving? Wife offered to let me "Buy a New Dirt Bike" for our 10th Anniversary September 2002. Well, after much hemming & hawing and being the cheap scape I am, I found a NUSED 2002 KTM MXC400-RFS. Bike was manufactured Feb. 2002, sold new for roughly $8000 and now being sold Sept. 02' for $4900.00 with about 10 hrs. per seller. A lot of money to me since, I had barely paid that much for a new car, much less used dirt bike. Since returning from Texas in 90 all the North Carolina Trail Riders (NCTR) rave were over how great KTMs were. Got to admit the 93' 300 EXC I rode briefly in the Daniel Boone NF pulled almost better than my Stroker XR200R down low. So, after seeing this 400 MXC in Cycle News, talking with seller and doing minor research I decided, it was now my turn to buy a Kronreif & Trunkenpolz Mattighofen. My Wife and I drove to Kings Dominion, I test drove the bike in a truck stop parking lot. First impression heavy dead weight @247lbs dry/>260lbs w/ fuel @ 8#s/gallon, slow feeling (like the last 84' XR-500R I rode) for a New Gen 4-stroke, but what the Hey, I'm going for it? after driving 3+ hrs. just to window shop. About 1 year later, following Spring 03, the NCTR club had its Second annual Mini Single Track/Trail Shoot Out, in the Curtis Mountain area. The "NCTR Shootout" members were composed of primarily Serious Seasoned Experienced Dirt Bike Riders/Racers ranging from 18-near 50, weights 120#-200#+. One of the purposes was to let members try out different bikes in trail systems we were actually riding in MEANING "EAST COAST SINGLE TRACK" rather than the West Coast areas all the Purdy Mags wrote consistently about. Between 8+ or so bikes, 1) 98' KTM-380 EXC 2) 92' Yam. WR-500 3) 00' KTM 400 SX-RFS 4) 02(?)03' Yam-YZ-250F 5) 02/03(?) KTM-200-EXC 6) 03' KTM-450 RFS-EXC 7) 02' KTM 400MXC-RFS ? 02/03 KTM 250-EXC 2-smoke. There was most likely a couple more 2-smokes, but I don't remember what KTMs, YAMs, ZUKs, KAWs?? The terrain we chose likened to the old "Cross Country, Hair Scrambles or Enduro trails we use to race on. Similar to some of the Brown Mountain and Uwharrie Nat. Forest Trail Systems. This trail system was pre-run by all riders to point out markers and familiarize route. Overgrown logging skid paths strewn with limbs fallen trees here and there, sidetrack hill trail, a couple hill climbs, Exposed rock, loose crush and run shale gravel on connector dirt-maintained roads, woods switch back with some stream crossings and of course tree roots everywhere along the way. The soil is primarily tacky red clay, decomposed leave mulch loose top layer on hard pack w/ typical mountain type rock exposed throughout. Moisture content of soil typical of woods riding with wet shady areas and dry trail in open sunny areas (NEAR PERFECT). There were 2 routes, one having more "Difficult Trail" than the other. We staged in a lower flat open woods area and allowed everyone to ride their personal bike and be timed throughout the different sections with times recorded. Then, each member could ride other members bikes for comparison of how their performance on another 2-smoke or 4-stroke of their Interest or Curiosity. Some of the bikes were modified w/ "Terrain Tamer" or bone stock, including Factory Spark arrestors to racing pipes, systems. The bikes ranged from Converted MXers (00'SX_RFS, 03(?)YZ-F, Enduro (98'-03 EXCs), Cross Country/Desert (91'WR, 02MXC). Bike Ride Times were stop watched measured and Recorded on each individual bike and Rider. KTM Memory of Exact date Fall 02', or Spring 03' fails me. I do remember this was one of the first woods rides for my NUSED Shiny Orange machine. I do know, I had been Motocross practicing this bike in Eastern North Carolina terrain. Major Woods riding had not been attempted up to this point. I might have put 5-8 hours on bike. Maybe one oil change(?) The suspension on the bike had been adjusted for sag Rear and Front per KTM owner's manual. System had been set up for more MX vs. woods/trails. Clickers had been set for harsher terrain per manual again. WP USD 4357 MXMA EXC forks (great for woods/BAD for MX) and PDS 5018 MCC EXC shock are the stock suspension components for the MXC. The engine is the same 4V SOHC w/ 400 SX tuning & with close ratio SX/MXC 6-speed transmission, not wide ratio 6-sp. in 400/520 EXC. The MAGIC BUTTON, Standard for RFS motors on MXCs and 12V/110W charging/lighting system, not on SX-RFS or SX 2-smokes though. Fuel tank is the humongous Baja/Desert 13L/3.5-gallon w/ the radiator protection actually being fuel capacity for the tank. Standard 21" front with 18" rear wheels. Magura Fat bars w/ adjustable mounting. Magura Hydraulic actuated clutch system works like "Butta"?. If you get a hydraulic clutch bike & then go back to a mechanical cable, YOU will SEE/Feel the advantages of smoother actuation, less hand/finger fatigue & GREATER CLUTCH CONTROL. Front 260mm/Rear 220mm brakes are Brembo Excellent for the year. The "Hard as a Rock" Seat/tank transition is relatively flat considering the tank size making cockpit easy to move about in. The triple tree is 20(?)mm offset. Forks are closed chambers(?) When all the dust settled, the consensus, by the times of the riders, on all the different bikes showed the KTM MXC 400-RFS & the KTM EXC-300 were the bikes that had the best times among all the bikes tested by different riders. Unfortunately, for me, I busted my "Arse" on a limb fallen at 45 degrees to the trail and re-cracked my ribs, that were injured, a couple months prior, when I blew out of a high sandy bowl berm and the bike landed on top of me. So, after the first run, I found out how fast this sluggish heavy feeling 4-stroke was in the woods, obviously faster than I knew how to handle it. -

WOW, what can I say as a 61 year old buying my last coffin. It still takes work to practice ride MX, but my eleven year older bike (05') makes it harder. I definitely like the 16's smooth predictable power, ergos, suspension, EFI. The rear brake is no doubt touchy (OEM pads still), I stall motor often & have to relearn friction point often. The fork seals are leaking, but KTM says service forks @ 35hrs. I have two other KTMs, 05 SX RFS & 02' 400MXC RFS both with e-button, so I have come to rely on e-start often. So far, lack of kicker hasn't been issue. Spokes have loosened up, rims have dinged, POs did poor maintenance on truing keeping tight. About 3+ hours later, all true and seized spoke nipples freed up. I love the aluminum sheet screws that hold plastic on, lite & effective. And yes, they will not strip out, if you adhere to proper torque. Air filter is no doubt also easier to change, reinstall and I still hate cleaning/servicing them, but this makes it just slightly easier. -

I have completely dis-assembled frame, inspected all moving parts, serviced/replaced worn bad parts & re-assembled. It does still need brake pedal bearings to remove some movement. 1) New SKF dust boot & fork seals w/ Amsoil STL Shock Therapy Light fluid w/ no rides. 2) Motion-Pro fork bleeders 3) NEW complete POLISPORT Plastics w/ no rides 4) NEW Moose Racing Radiator Guards w/ no rides. Radiators repaired-straightened. 5) Good Michelin Tires 6) Renthal Twin Ring rear sprocket, front, chain. Rims trued w/ free spokes. 7) Factory Connection Suspension front ? Factory Connection Suspension modified/upgraded rear shock & Reservoir. 9) Air filter w/ filter skins, Engine oils used always Amsoil 10w40-10w50-20w50 Motorcycle oils w/ stainless serviceable filters. 10) Gripper seat cover -

This is actually a 2011 GasGas EC250 Racing and not an XC. Anyway... Last of the small framed GG's! These bikes fit my short self better than any other bike I have ever ridden. Really like the styling and the little details that most don't think about that this bike has. OEM it comes with a hydraulic clutch, dual ignition mapping, Galfer rotors, Vforce III reeds, 2k3 stator, an actually useful headlight, and a lot of smaller details. I'm really loving the 48mm PFP Zokes up front and the Ohlins 888 shock. The forks are plush without feeling mushy and vague. The shock, well, it's Ohlins! Just dial it in and it works great everywhere. This bike has a lot of bells and whistles added by it's previous owner (Thanks Ricky D!) along with a ton of extra parts when they're needed. Currently equipped... BRP bar isolators/Scotts damper setup, Renthal twin walls, Fastway barkbusters w/Cycra shields, MSR pegs, Lectron carb, Rekluse Core EXP 3.0 w/matching billet clutch basket, Emperor Racing radiator cages, RB head mod, LTR powervalve cover, FMF Gnarly pipe and Q4 Stealth silencer, carbon fiber pipe guard, Renthal 13t CS sprocket, Supersprox 48t rear sprocket, No Toil dual layer air filter, Twin Air billet air filter cage, bib mousses front and rear, Kenda Parker DT's front and rear, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a thing or two! Now, for the only things I don't like. The seat reminds me of a KTM it is so hard but instead of a 2x4 like KTM it feels more like a 2x6! ? The other is how the air filter locates on the air box. You have to be really careful to get it seated correctly. Next mods for me are Tubliss on both ends and Goldentyre Fatty 90/100 up front and a Shinko 525 cheater 120/100 rear. Also have some smaller diameter Scott Deuce grips coming as well. Hopefully this will complete the mods I want to make and I'll be ready for the upcoming AMRA racing season. Overall, I'm really loving this bike and thinking I will be enjoying it for years to come.-

Great motor and great suspension. The bike handles a bit different than anything else I've ridden, which I attribute to Yamaha's centralization of mass. From my experience, this bike's ability to corner and not hop out of ruts is heavily dependent on your body position on the bike. Overall, I love this thing.- 1 comment
