  1. I need some help. I am new to the forum and glad there are things like this out there. I am tryimg to get my kids into motorbiking and fixing them. I know some, but need to learn a lot. Anyway, we got and 1982 xr80 that was ceased. We got the engine freed up nad put it back together. We made sure piston was at tdc and that the Cam and sprocket were proper. Where we are getting killed is the timing. When we are at tdc, the flywheel marks are nowhere close to the small arrow on the crankcase. Everything I have learned says that the "t" Mark needs to be lined up on the arrow. It is literally impossible to do this. We've turned the thing a million times to try. The only thing I can imagine now is to take off flywheel and manually line it up. Is taking off flywheel to do this even reasonable? Also. How much voltage should I be getting out of the wire from stater ? At the moment, I get .25 volts. Help and thanka in advance.
  2. I'm looking into buying some extra wheels to just swap out when I take my DRZ 400 out to the dirt. They have the stock wheels on it now but have 70% street 30% dirt tires on it right now that just won't cut it out in the dirt. I found some 1982 IT 250 DID from Yamaha but I'm not sure if they'll fit right on or what kind of modifications I would have to make to get it on there. Thanks for help guys!
  3. hey guys, I'm back with my yz125 with a busted clutch, my local dirt bike graveyard(cycle salvage in Peterborough) still doesn't have any yz125 clutches from my era. on facebook marketplace i found a 1984 yz125 that the guy blew something in the engine for 650$ cad. this isnt that bad of a price, if i was looking for a project bike. im juts looking for the clutch. the 1983 and on clutches seem to have 6 bolts on the pressure plate even though my 82 yz has 5. this 84 yz125 also has 5 bolts. i am wondering if i will be able to put the 84 clutch in my 82 and drive off(maybe some tlc but not like machining). do u guys know? this is a timed subject if anyone knows, pleas eget back to me soon as this guy's ad might not be up for much longer. thanks guys, H1rush
  4. So I have started fixing up my 81 XR100 I saved from my uncles Junkyard (old lady cleaning out her garage and wanted to get rid of it). I have it up and running but it needs a few things... My question is WILL the number plates from a 81 or 82 XR80 fit on my XR100? I have contacted Honda and not much help from them... I then tried Maier plastics and they have the plastic panels for the XR80 81-83 but that's it and they are not sure they will cross over. They told me to order the xr80 panels and see if they will work and IF i dont scratch them i can return them. Ebay, Craigslist, amazon are a no go. even contacted vintage bike shops in the EU and they had ONE XL side plate but it had just sold... ANY HELP AT ALL WOULD BE APPRECIATED! THANKS!
  5. So let me preface this by saying I am not mechanically inclined, at all. I picked this beater bike up to try and teach myself a thing or two. my XL125S runs and rides but exhaust (and smoke, lol) spews out of the engine right at the place I am pointing to in the photo. My questions are; what is happening? why? and what is the best method to fix it? i was thinking of using ultra heat muffler repair "tape" to fix it. Would that be suitable?
  6. I've recently been struggling trying to get my 1982 honda xr200r running again. I have tore most of the motor down and put it back in time. Everything seemed perfect until it wouldn't start. Of course you haven't lived till you try to kickstart one, so this is where i noticed a big problem... instead of kicking this bike over and over I decided to push start it. get a run and go on my concrete drive way and hop on and dump the clutch... nothing.. no, literally nothing. time and time again even had a friend pull me with a 4 wheeler once. the wheel locks up and will not turn the motor over. you can put the bike in gear and kick it over and the bike will move. but no matter if you take the spark plug out, and put it in a high gear(went through all of them) it will not turn the motor over. i have worked on alot of motors in my life and this has me going... huh? i hope i gave a good enough run down of what is going on for someone to help me.
  7. Anybody know if a XL500 1981 tank will fit on a 1982 xl500r???? or will XR500 1982 fit???
  8. I recently acquired a 1982 Honda XR 250R, competition only. The bike runs great without choke and idles fine, the adjusting plates on the back wheel were stripped and cause it to slip the chain constantly. It was also missing the lock washer for the front sprocket, I managed to fix everything I could see that was noticeable to me anyway as I am fairly new to bikes. Here are some of the things I am having problems with I cant seem to figure out on my own. 1. Headlight, When I had it on the stand fixing the other issues I noticed a rats nest of wires behind the headlight plastic, when I took it off the wire for the killswitch had come loose, (great connection right) anyway, I took the voltmeter too it and got a constant from the wire that was still connected and 30~ volts from the end the other had come loose from when the bike was running. My question is, whats going on here? Is my regulator shot? I called a friend and he said my CDI box doubles as my regulator? The bulb that is in the headlight fixture looks huge, and is 12v. The headlight mount itself looks like the white one from the another 250R, but is not original to the bike. I also do not have anything but two loose wires to connect too it, one has a constant the other is ground im assuming, but gets no additional power when bike is running, plugging anything into it will blow it at this point anyway. 2.Handlebar Alignment, I loosened all 16 nuts on the forks and hit it with liquid wrench, held the front tire between my legs and tried twisting them back, but didnt get much movement, or enough to fix it completely. 3.Missing Hose, I'm missing a hose from my front wheel, opposite side of the breaks (obviously), to who knows where and for who knows what. I see it in all photos of the bike, but cant figure out where it is in diagrams or what it does, or if i can get a new one. 4. Smoke, it smokes fairly regularly, even after warmed up. Its a light grey to white smoke, and when you come to a stop and turn of bike after a good run and let it sit there will be 2-3 drops of oil and then nothing. I'm told this is water? I did wash the bike when I got it home but it hasn't gone away since i put it back on both wheels and went on the trails.
  9. Seemed like you never knew what you were going to get on the 3 hour block of wide world of sports in the early 80’s. Could’ve been ping pong or downhill skiing or gymnastics. When the Superbikers came on, I was jumping up and down as a kid. I just watched a few on YouTube. As a grown man watching now, those races were crazy!! 1982 is especially good. They had MotoGP guys out there, supercross/motocross champs, flattrack world champs and they were all sending it big time. Someone could’ve been hurt bad at the speeds they were going and the motocross guys had regular gear on going 100 mph on pavement on big bore 2 strokes. Very entertaining racing, especially seeing all the big names of the time.
  10. So I have recently purchased a Yamaha it175 from 1982 and I'm having a problem with the clutch. I can shift through all the gears and bike runs great and was recently rebuilt. But when you pull the clutch in it doesn't disengage the engine making it so you can't stop unless you put it in neutral and makes it very awkward to get started. When you pull the clutch lever in it doesn't come back out like it should, it's like something disconnected or slipped. The clutch was working great was just riding up and down my road when it stop working. I think that the clutch might be sticking but not sure why it would just start all of a sudden. Hoping to find some pointers on what it could be. Thanks.
