  1. I have a 1989 RM250 that I just finished rebuilding and I have some questions about the gearing and torque. First off, I am 6'2 and 225lbs if that makes a difference. Right now it has a very good top speed and decent acceleration with the 50/13 or 3.84/1 gearing ratio it has right now. As a track bike it feels OK but because I do a lot of trail and enduro riding and need to be able to pick up the front end a bit easier to get it over logs and such. I prefer to stay away from clutch wheelies if I can so even if I crack the throttle in 1st the front wheel only likes to raise a few inches off the ground and I cant sustain a wheelie like I can on my 83 KDX175. I was planning to re-gear the bike with a 54 tooth on the back. I am hoping this can be changed with the gearing ratios and its not a power valve or carb problem. I am hoping that this would up the torque a bit but I am new to re-gearing and I don't know If it would be a big enough difference on the trail. If anyone knows anything about the topic I would appreciate any information.
  2. Hi. New member and all that..nice to meet u! Recently bought a very abused 1989 RM125. Disassembled the backend and have replaced all swingarm bearings and reinstalled it. Have replaced all bearings in the linkages including the spherical bearing that the shock bolts on to. Unlike other bearings this one was very tight to fit, but is in its correct position and is undamaged. The spacers that fit either side of this bearing do appear to now protrude by around 1mm either side? To make the connection to the lower shock now requires force! Once assembled my upper shock mounting is around 5mm out of alignment with the hole in the frame. All bolts are loose to not restrict movement. I've checked all photos of the bike taken before I took it apart and parts diagrams, but cannot identify the cause of the problem. Its almost as though my shock has grown whilst removed from the bike!! Ive now reassembled everything in reverse, but again cannot make the connection to the lower shock mounting without significant force. Any clues from the pics please? Does the position of the swingarm in my second pic look right? Almost feels as though it is hanging too low? Thanks.
  3. Here's the journal of my big CR. I also own a 1983 CR480, which is a nice bike, but the 1989 version of Honda's big-boy is a different breed of cat. The '89 is water cooled, has upside down forks, disco break-o, and a more immediate power delivery. The 480 barks. The 500 snorts. They both turn quick lap times. Here's a shot of the scoot before I bought it. A buddy of mine, Big Jim, was clearing out his garage. I bought three bikes from him with "some assembly required".
  4. Hello, I'm new to bikes, I just bought my first one. I'm getting used to it, but I noticed the fork seals were leaking slightly and appear to be weather cracked, so I ordered a rebuilt kit for the seals. It is an all balls fork seal kit, I read they are pretty good. However I have little experience working on bikes thus far, I was wondering if I would be able to tackle this by myself with the proper tools and some spare time. I am mechanicly inclined enough to learn, and understand what I'm doing so I'm confident but, I'm not sure if there is any difficult parts of the process. Also if anyone has any pointers as far as small things to keep an eye on, this bike runs really mint and starts up first few kicks every time and I'd really love to keep her that way! Thanks in advance guys and gals
  5. Hello everyone. I have a 1989 xr 100.the frame has been poorly rewelded many time and I am looking for a good replacement. If I am not mistaken in 1990 the ignition changed to cdi which changed frame somewhat. What year frames are a perfect match to the 1989? Does anyone have a source for used parts that they like best?
  6. Hey thumpers, I'm in the process of rebuilding a 1989 YZ250, everything is back together and it's ALMOST ready to fire up. However... I'm missing a part on the PowerValve arm actuator, or the governor. There's like 50 different names to it. But that's besides the point. I'm having confusion on whether the bike is supposed to have a Torsion spring to hold the actual arm to the valve, or if it's a thruster plate. I've been on a metric Sh*t ton of parts websites to buy the piece and each website either shows a thruster plate, or a torsion spring. Can someone please specify for me? The bike engine is the same from 1989-1993. Thank you!
  7. Are there any go-to parts places for these old kdx's? Or anybody that you guys recommend I send my cylinder too? I traded my old kz550 for this kdx last week and the only reason I agreed to the trade was because the kdx supposedly had a brand new crank and top end with low hours on it. It ran good enough to make the trade and had great compression, just needed some carb tuning, it had a good knock to it but everywhere I researched said that its normal and it's only the kipps valves. As soon as I got the carb lined out, the con rod bearing went out, taking my piston and cylinder with it.. idk why it failed, con rod says "royal" on it but other than that, idk what brand any of the parts used are. Havent dug too deep yet. Just want to get it running as cheap as I can since I traded off a dang nice bike for this thing and now I'm kicking myself for doing so.. I have to many project bikes and I really didnt think I was getting another one.
  8. Hey guys, I am really needing some good advice here from anybody who has ever owned or rebuilt classic Yamaha 2 strokes (1989 - 1994). I live in South Africa, and bought a little farm thumper while on holiday this past weekend. It was advertised as a DT175 which is a bike that is easy to get parts for down here. It has been cosmetically customized and looks pretty darn cool... and lets face it, all the old classic Yamaha 2T engines look the same at a glance! So I genuinely thought it was a naked DT. The bike had no papers, and was used purely for the farmer to putt around on his farm. The only things needing attention was the stator cover which had snapped in half - this was visibly noticeable, and a little leak from a badly resealed gasket (both generally easy and cheap to fix here). The bike was still running and idling fine, started first kick, and I had a little ride around the farm before loading the bike up onto my pickup and heading off, thinking I could fix this thing up nicely in no time for next to nothing, and have what we call down in SA "a nuwe speelgoed" (A new plaything) for the weekends when I am not riding my beloved and reliable DRZ400SM. SO, I get home and decide to contact our local Yamaha branch, out of interest, to find out the history of the bike before I start fiddling (Don't ask me why I did not do this all before I bought the bike - It was a spur of the moment purchase, and was sold to me for dirt cheap!). I send off the VIN and engine number. Comes back, and this little freakin' turd turns out to be a 1989 TDR180!! WHAT. But now I am stuck as we do not really have TDR's down here - and I have never even seen one myself. Long story short - What alternative could I use as a stator cover? Do any other old Yamaha 2T model stator covers fit the TDR or share similar engine parts? Ordering from Ebay is so expensive thanks to my country being in junk status due to a junk president. So the shipping costs more than the actual item does, and our customs is a joke too. Yamaha has also advised me that this stator cover has been discontinued. I have put up local ads looking for parts, contacted FB 2T groups, and local shops. Nothing for TDR's has come back yet. Any advice or sharing of experience is welcome! 🙂
  9. Hi, I recently bought a 1989 cr250 project and it needs a new exhaust system. I was wondering where to buy one? ive looked in quite a few places but they dont seem to make them anymore. Im looking for a aftermarket system. Any help appreciated, thanks.
  10. Bula From Fiji I am quite new at riding and mechanics. I have a 1989 KX250 that I want to be more of an enduro/woods bike. I read that the 91-94 KDX250 transmission should ‘fit right in’ as the two engines were basically the same. I have a 1992 KDX250 transmission and have attempted to install it. A couple of the gears are wider, I was not able to close the cases. I have read a couple of the threads on here about similar situations. However, they involved later model years which apparently required a bit of modification. Would anyone have any info about my particular bike? Thanks, Brad
  11. Hello, Does anyone knows if this kawasaki KX 80 is from 1989 of 1990? Here's an WeTransfer URL to the pictures https://we.tl/t-DhE7vMT22m Thanks!
