  1. Hello, this past weekend was overly frustrating for me and a few friends. We planned weeks ahead to get away for the weekend, leaving the even more frustrated wife and kids, traveling a few hours south to ride at Burning Rock Outdoor Adventure Park in WV. Cabins rented, tanks filled, bikes in tow. We made it 15 miles from camp the first morning only to have my rather new (250 miles, 16 hours) 2016 250xc-w stop dead. Initial thought was a plug, which when changed it hit just for a second then shut off again DEAD. Put a third plug in and towed it down the trail in third gear for a 1/2 mile... NOTHING DEAD. Finally pulled the plug and realized it wasn't sparking at all. We switched the CDI box, voltage reg, and coil packs between mine and my friends 2014 on the trail to no avail. We also checked the kill switch. Fast forward to today and I have pulled the side case to inspect the stator. You can see in the picture the bottom black winding, which by the manual looks to be the charging coil of the ignition is bubbled (not sure if that's normal). The maintenance book I have states at 68 degree, which my garage is maybe 75, the resistance should be 12-16.6 ohms. You can see right at the coil itself I'm getting around 9.7, and if measured at the bus connecter as the manual says, it reads about 10.1. All the other values for the coil pack and stator are perfectly within spec, and nothing is shorted to ground. I'm the original owner of the bike and haven't done anything but change the oil and clean the air filter. After all that my question is are those roughly 2 ohms enough to prevent the plug from sparking??? Alternator specs Lighting winding .1 ohms Battery winding .7 ohms Stator spec Pulse generator 100.1 ohms Coil pack Primary winding .3 secondary 6K ohms On a side note, I highly recommend the trails (what I saw) and the employees of Burning Rock. One of the maintenance guys rode 30 minutes with my friends, around the mountain, in the truck, to lead them to me... Super friendly folks. https://burningrockwv.com/
  2. Hey guys now i know this is probably a stupid question but would a 2012 ktm 250xcw be to much for me? A little background first. So i have been riding since i was five, am 5'9" weigh 125lbs and am 14 years old. I ride mostly tight single track being most of the trails are only handlebar width with semi large hill clims with little to no run up. Also i ride an enduroX track with lots of trials oriented obstacles. I have a trials background and for about 3 1/2 years i rode a 250 2t trials bike. Then i sold it this year in hopes of getting a true 2t enduro bike. For awhile i really wanted a 150xcw but they are really hard to find up here in Alberta Canada. I am currently riding my cousins a crf150f. So i have a friend who is selling this https://www.kijiji.ca/v-dirt-bikes-motocross/edmonton/2012-ktm-250-xc-w/1476540528. What do you guys think? Would it be to much or could it work? Now i know the price is a little high but he said he is quite negotiable on the price so what do you guys think? Would this be a good buy or should i wait for a 150?
  3. I bought my bike brand new a 2018 ktm 250xcw. I love this bike but here lately I've been having some issues with it. I was at a hare scramble and my bike over heated and boiled over blew coolant out the house on top the head I didnt think anything of it cuz it was a mud race everyone was over heating.. fast forward some time and I've noticed it's been overheating more often. Seems to happen when I'm stuck behind a slower rider or on some real tight technical trail also has happen when climbing hill climbs. The last time it overheated we were in Georgia riding highland park. All my buddy's hit the same trail and same hill climb but my bike was the only one 2 boil over and this time it blew out of the radiator cap. When I got home I changed the oil noticed it was a little milky so figured the water pump seal was bad went ahead and replaced it with a hot rods rebuild kit and a aftermarket impeller for better circulation. I run engine ice and I check my levels pretty regularly.. debating if I wanna get a fan kit for it but I dont wanna mask a problem I'd rather find the issue.. I find it odd that none of my buddies are overheating like me. Also I have 120 hrs on it now and I did a top in at 80hrs the cylinder and piston had normal wear. Any ideas would help me out greatly I'm not super mechanically inclined so I'm scratching my head here lol
  4. I just recently purchased a 2011 250 xcw. My confusion is caused because it has silver wheels, a tail light, and a headlight. I can't find anything about how these are on the bike and I can't even find a set of the rims. I know the 12 came with silver rims but still not a headlight. Yes I know for sure it is aa xcw, I haveee the title.
  5. couple months back on my way home from a 2 hour ride my bike lost compression and quit. lucky I was just by my driveway. pushed it back and immediately checked the spark plug and cylinder temps with a temp gun. all seamed fine. pulled reads and pipe. everything looked fine but no compression. pulled the head and found the top of the piston trashed from metal flying around. chunk went down beside the piston and scored the cylinder. bike had 59 hours and 2048km on it. pulled the motor and took it to the dealer for them to decide what happened. chunks of metal looks like bearing cage material but no play or evidence of anything wrong. the ktm tech found a bunch more chunks of metal in the bottom end but could not find out where It came from. ktm ended up paying for a new head, cylinder, piston, crankshaft and power valve along with all the associated gaskets, bearings and oil seals. total for parts was around 2900$ Cdn. I had to pay Labour as they couldn't find the source. Labour ended up being 730$ Cdn. motor is back and running great. I was happy with the result as it was 7 months out of warranty having never been back to the dealer with over 2000 km on it. here are pictures of the top end damage
