  1. Which is better? And it'd be a 125.
  2. Hi all, I have a question that i haven't found some clear cut info about. Id just like to hear it from the community.... my mate and i are honda CRF boys , and sadly when we were recently on an out ride in the South African landscape, his engine came to a halt & seizure! what a day it was getting the bloody thing back to the car! Anyway we are young adults at uni who dont really have a lot of mony spare! we managed to find a way to rapidly replace the bike and to save money. We found a running 2004 yama yz250 2t and the guy traded us a seized 2005 crf250 for this- he specialized in chop shopping Honda and obviously saw value in this trade. it obviously came with its quirks.... this yz250 has: -1998 yz 250 motor -CDI from an 80cc yz When we first took the bike to the track it would not start. I noticed the following: -small holes in the expansion chamber (a few, none bigger than the tip on an Aux jack)- what is the impact of these small holes on the bike? ( i will use fire-gum to fix) -muffler does not tightly fit to the end of expansion chamber. FYI, fuel mix was 50:1- recommended by the oil we used- i have been told that old Yamaha are better with more oil? 25:1? So leading up to my question: when we eventually got the bike started (Bump start) it really ran lumpy, and bogged when the accelerator was pulled and eventually died. when i get the chance to look at the bike, what is the impact of holes in an expansion chamber?- could this be a reason for starting and power issue and bogging under acceleration?? Could this be because of a CDI from an 80cc? Could this be Fuel Mix? Spark Plug? apart from those questions, i am going to change the spark plug anyway- i can assume that maybe this could be due to a faulty plug?- maybe?? anyway, this is what i know. perhaps you guys would be able to add to my theories or tell me something more that i could investigate? thanks, Luke
  3. While riding last weekend and started having shifting issues with my 2011 KTM 300 EXC. I've 'Googled' the ? out of the issues but haven't found someone with exact same problem and or with a fix. I have tried the Ryan Despaws fix suggestion from Youtube for issue 2 ,as it was nice and simple while shift shaft was out for inspection, but no luck. As I'm having these 2 issues I feel they might be related and after all my research am leaning towards a shifting fork issue. Thing is I'm no mechanic so before I split the engine cases I'm hoping others may have had a similar experience and found a solution. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Issue 1: Shift Shaft Freeplay (for want of a better term). As per video below (hope link works) the shift shaft moves freely in and out of the engine and can move far enough in to jam completely on the outside of the shift star. I removed the shift shaft and nothing is out of place, broken or appears damaged. Issue 2: When downshifting on my last ride it would stick or not shift until the revs were low/mid. Not long after I had issues upshifting the same as downshifting but also where it would change but the gear lever appeared slack (not centred). I removed the clutch side in the hopes of finding something simple and 't have to split engine cases but nothing stands out. While I realise the engine running, oil, load, etc, makes changing easier the video below demonstrates almost exactly the issue I was having under load, whether at speed or stationary.
  4. Here's the journal of my big CR. I also own a 1983 CR480, which is a nice bike, but the 1989 version of Honda's big-boy is a different breed of cat. The '89 is water cooled, has upside down forks, disco break-o, and a more immediate power delivery. The 480 barks. The 500 snorts. They both turn quick lap times. Here's a shot of the scoot before I bought it. A buddy of mine, Big Jim, was clearing out his garage. I bought three bikes from him with "some assembly required".
  5. Hi guys I'm 200lb, riding for close to 30 years. Currently riding 2016 KTM350xcf and a rebuilt 2002 KTM300MXC. I want to keep both and looking to get a TE/TPI play bike. We ride hillside singles with occasional climb and steep downhills. The 350 is a beast but a bit lazy on tight turns. Was thinking 150I/TPI for the lightwait and agility but I'm concerned it might not be enough for tge occasional climbs. Any feedback is welcome! (And maybe the answer is 300TPI but it's hard to separate from my 2002 in the picture so looking for something different)
  6. Hello everyone, I'm looking to purchase my first 450 undecided on whether yamaha or honda still, but what I need to look into is my technique. I ride on tracks with my son and used to ride a CR250R and KX125. Going to a 4 stroke the jumping must be done differently as you can't just let off and ride the jump. Is there a lot to know to do differently with a 4 stroke vs. 2 stroke riding?
  7. Hey All, I have a two-stroke KTM. I've never had an issue with running out of gas thus far, but will be taking some long runs down in Ouray this weekend. I'm not comfortable carrying pre-mix gas on my person, and don't have much room in my pack that consists of hydration pack, snacks, and tools. Instead want to carry some 2T oil in a tall thin cylindrical container of sorts. I'll mark the container to reflect amount to add to 1/2/3 gallons. What types of containers are you guys traveling with? Maybe I'm overthinking this, but I like to be prepared...
  8. Hello dear forum , I'm back with some questions ... Could i found a low maintenance dirt bike (400/450 4T OR 250 2T) ? I'm going to ride fields and much like trail riding but I want a low maintenance schedule..... Is that possible ? Possibly Enduro ? Thanks in advance @_@
