    KTM 530 EXC-R (2008)

    I love my bike!
  2. Hey guys, I recently did a top end rebuild on my 2009 KTM 530 exc and about 10 hours after I noticed there was some loud ticking in the engine. So, I decided to do a valve check and one shim was completely gone and the top of that valve was wore away. I dug into the problem and found that the head gasket in the Tusk gasket kit 1032020190 from rockymountain did NOT have holes where the oil passages are into the head!!!!!!!! so for the last 10 hours the only oil the head got was from the timing chain splashing it up there. Attached is a picture showing the missing holes. I am writing this post to hopefully save some people a big headache and lots of money. If you are planning a rebuild check you head gasket to make sure there are holes where there needs to be holes!! This cost me about $200 to fix but in an extreme case it could cost much much more. Should be back on the trail this weekend! Happy riding!

A little hefty for the tight single track lol
  13. So I'm new to enduro bikes in general, but I've recently picked up a used 2010 KTM 530 EXC Champions Edition from a dealership. I've been doing a lot of research online, but I find that there isn't as much information online about this particular bike, compared to the RFS motors for example, so I have a few questions if anybody would like to answer them The first thing I want to do is change the fluids as a precautionary measure. I've read through the manual and it seems that KTM recommends Motorex Power 10w50 oil; now I don't know about you guys, but that stuff is expensive in the UK (Cheapest I can find it for is £48/4 litres); but I don't doubt that it does its' job correctly. I've found that Castrol Power 1 Racing 10w50 oil only costs £25 for 4 litres; considerably cheaper. Is it worth using Motorex oil, or will Castrol be just as good? Do you have any other oil recommendations in the UK? Also, a few questions regarding the transmission - I'm new to dual oil sump bikes; can I use the same oil that goes in the engine side, for the transmission? Or, is there a specific gear oil that KTM recommends? I can't seem to find anything in the manual about separate oils. I know this next question is going to sound silly, but how do you clean the transmission oil screen? Do you just wipe it off? soak it in oil? Does the screen need to be replaced like a filter (every other oil change etc.)? Before you guys answer these questions about the oil - I've heard that the early models of the 530 exc have had issues where the engine oil is transferred to the transmission side (or vice versa, through a bad seal I believe). I'm not sure if that's still an issue with this particular edition of the bike, or my bike in particular. However, taking this issue into consideration; If I can use the same oil in both sides, would you recommend I do that as a preventative measure in the event that they do end up mixing together? Lastly, being a newbie to enduro bikes; I've never had the luxury (or not) of kick starting one. The kick starter is very stiff, although I haven't had the chance to give it a proper kick yet. On some videos I see riders pumping the kick starter to get the motor to TDC (I think?), before giving it a full kick - I can't pump it, it's too stiff to do that. I just wanted to check if that was normal? I wouldn't want to give it a full blown kick and end up breaking something (That is literally my luck). Maybe I'm just weak Any other advice is very appreciated! Thanks all P.S. Go easy on me, making a transfer from road bikes to enduro bikes is a bit of a learning curve for me

Great Torque and Power, very useable. King of Dual Sports if you lean more to the dirt and excellent for the AZ Desert.

I bought this bike brand new. I have loved it from day 1. Awesome usability. Diverse and comfortable. Stock seat sucks, seat concepts and faast companies flex bar along with fmf Q4 transformed her from nice to glorius. Only negatives would be seat height. I am 6' and it can be a problem in the nasties. KTM should balance there wheels at the factory especially for street legal bikes IMO. Headlight is weak stock.

This bike has been great to me, I do the normal maintenance and it just keeps on going -- I haven't needed to buy any oem parts but they are quite expensive if you need them.

Just upgraded from an 03 KTM 525 EXC-G and I love this bike. As of 7/29/14, I added a BRP scotts submount, Trail Tech Voyager, and a baja designs squadron headlight. Can't wait to put everything to work now!
