  1. I have a 2016 XR650l just bought a XR only slip on muffler have tried several aftermarket and the stock clamp but can't get a snug fit. I am trying to connect the XR Only exhaust to the stock header pipe. The exhaust is leaking pretty bad. Does anyone have any ideas or ways to help fix this? Thanks for the help!
  2. Hey everyone, I recently came across this 2006 dr 650 with 12k miles and was looking for some input about the bike and if everything looks and sounds right. I wasnt sure if this is the right sub to post in so mods feel free to move it. Im coming from an 04 yzf250 and was looking for a larger trail bike that i could also commute to work on (15-20 miles). Im 6' 190. I realize that this bike is very different from my 250 but after watching numerous videos and reading an ungodly amount of forum posts and articles this seems to fit the bill for what im looking for. If anybody has any suggestions, prior experience with a 650 thumper or tips let me know! Thanks Video :
  3. I've always been a large man, 6'4" 275 lbs and im looking into getting a decent bike for hard enduro. I understand that light is better however I have a chance to pick up a 2013 honda xr650l for only 3k$ and was wondering if it would be an ok bike for this type of riding. We also have roughly 150+ miles of goverment maintained trails where I live and would like to take it out on those to (id probably ride it to work on overly nice days). Is this a decent bike for hard enduro at my size? Would I need to purchase a new suspension or can I tune the current one? Is this bike even worth the 3k$ he's asking? (I constantly see the same bike from 2002-2008 run at this price where I live) What are good cheap mods to do to it if I do get it? (Already has the carb mod/welded subframe/egr removed) What should I look out for when buying? What is the rebuild mileage? He has roughly 9k on it, I dont make great $ and im paying for school at the same time so I'm looking for very low maintenance (besides oil/filter swaps every few rides)
  4. Hi all! I've got an issue, one of many when it comes to bikes. I searched throughout all the pages I could find pertaining to my situation and couldn't find very much useful information. So the issue is, the bike has no electric start.... until it's hot enough to melt steel that is. It will bump start first time every time. But I can sit and crank the starter over for ever and it'll never start until the charger is bumped up past 200 amps. Not good. The story so far, Got the bike for 1k cash. Guy said it has no spark and no second gear. This particular guy also only ever rode newer crotch rockets. Brought it home pulled the choke, attached battery charger and she fired right up. Ran like absolute crap, but oh well I figure it's an older bike with only 10k miles so it probably needs a good carb cleaning. Took the carb apart and didn't know I messed something up until way later(didn't tighten down main jet). Oh well she runs well enough if I can get her started. Moved from California to Oklahoma. Eventually found the money to fix 2nd gear, and as I am a certified Honda small engine technician apprentice I figured it would be no big deal. Completely tore down engine to it's roots replaced 2nd, and 5th gear(because 5th gear connects to 2nd on the countershaft) dogs were worn pretty badly on both. The engine looked quite good compared to most others I've seen. Put the engine back together as per the service manual. Did all the right steps including loosening the banjo bolts to test for proper oil pressure. I even tore apart the electric starter to clean the contacts and the brushes and replace the dielectric grease. Adjusted the valves as per the service manual, replaced all gaskets, o-rings, seals, and oil filter. Finally after about a month of waiting on parts and reassembly I get to start her, only she doesn't. Electric start is still giving me the same issues I've always had. So I replaced the Ignition coil, CDI box, and put a new battery in, plus the starter motor rebuild. Nothing. Still cranks forever. I said what the heck and tried to push it slightly down hill and bump start it, and voila... fired right up! Once she gets hot enough and the stator charges the battery enough it'll electric start... sometimes. So I looked towards ignition, used a tool called ignition mate. Pretty awesome tool if you can afford it. Well while cranking the ignition mate reads the spark plug is getting 1-4kw of "spark" every cycle, well it only fires after getting up past 5kw sometimes 6-8kw. And sometimes the ignition would be intermittent as in it wouldn't give any spark at all. I cycle the ignition and it seems to soft reset the bike as it will usually give it back spark. I tested this with the new and old CDI box, the old one would never spark. Ever. So I threw it in the trash. A month later I stil l can't figure it out. Is there something I'm missing? TL;DR Bike won't start using electric start only bump start before and after engine rebuild Electric start works after pushing the starter past about 200 cold cranking amps or when hot.
  5. Bought new in 1997, my Suzuki DR650 motorcycle in 2014, with 20500 Km on the clock experienced unpredictable catastrophic 3 rd gear disintegration. Eventually in December 2016 the Small Claims Court of South Africa, with Suzuki Auto South Africa defending, the court awarded me my damages claim for the repair of my Suzuki motorcycle. 6. Hello everyone, I've read all over the forums how to do the safety bypass with the clutch cables to ground, but what I haven't seen is a real list of what safeties exactly this bypasses. I've heard it bypasses the clutch, and kick stand safeties but are there any others? I am switching to a clutch perch that doesn't have these connections and in general would like to ditch the whole hi-beam/turn signal assembly all together. Another thing I don't really care for is the choke at the clutch. I prefer a knob down on the carb to push in/out, looking at it I'm not sure how I could do this with the current setup, is there a specific piece I can order, does anyone have a link handy? THANKS!
  7. Hello all! My name is Miles and I need some help gauging what to expect for condition/"reliability" you could say, of my DRZ400E for cross country travel! I am looking into traveling the Trans America Trail. I'm from Rhode Island and found an alternate rout where I can start on the West border of Connecticut. Ending in Colorado, to Nevada, then California; and cruising something along the lines of RT66 back. [just for reference, don't mean to ramble] The Machine: 2003 DRZ400-E ~6k miles total - 5k lightly ridden, never seen dirt - 0.8k %100 hard off road [past year] Frequent Oil changes, Air Filter changes {I ride with the guy I purchased it from nearly daily. He was good about maintenance on the regular, but also pushe the bike in the woods just as much!} Front and Rear Suspension rebuilt, carburetor rebuilt all last year Stock everything except FMF power bomb header and exhaust muffler, and Vapor Trail Tech, lights + fork socks Expected Maintenance: Top End Rebuild, Timing, Valves adjusted [Have not done compression test, but i would expect new top to be necessary] obvious things such as Brake Pads, Fluids, Chain/Sprockets, Tries, Heavy Tubes From this information, And Any You Can Think Of To Ask, does this DRZ have potential for the Trans America Trail; a ~6'000 dirt, then ~4,000 road return trip?! Or would I be better off selling it for a newer model? Thanks! -Miles
  8. So my negligence has left me with several hooked teeth on the balancer drive sprocket (directly behind the flywheel on crankshaft). I need some help on replacing it. 1.) The manual states that i need special tool 09917-23711 (ring nut socket wrench) in order to remove the old one and torque down the replacement. I've seen the Suzuki branded tool for $114 - 180. There's also an undbranded one on ebay for $60. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Suzuki-Cranksh ... 2630!US!-1 If I can help I'd rather not have to purchase a tool I'm only going to use once. Does anyone have one they can lend me if I put a deposit on it? 2.) The manual also states that I need a Conrod Holder #09910-20116, I'm guessing that would stop the crank from spinning during removal and reinstallation. Is there any way I could get around this as well? I've seen a youtube video of someone locking up the piston by feeding a shoestring through the sparkplug hole. I'm not sure I trust that not to go wrong and have dirt/fabric in my cylinder. If I put the bike in gear and ratchet strap the rear wheel to the frame or something more stout, like a tree, would that prevent the crank from spinning? 3.) Also part # 12662-37402 Suzuki balancer drive sprocket usually runs about $130 new. Does anyone have a used one in decent condition they'd be willing to cut me a deal on?
  9. Hey everyone. I've just started to ride my dr650 again after about a 6 month break. As I was taking it down a back road I started to hear a rattle coming from the left side of the bike. At first I could only hear it in 1st gear, after I got back to the main road I could hear it in the lower gears. Where there wasn't a whole lot of noise hiding it. It doesn't do it on smooth roads, and it doesn't do it while idling. At first I thought it might be my home made foot pegs. Alas it still did it even as I was holding them still. Also on the left side the engine is getting very hot fairly quickly. I'm currently waiting for the engine to cool off to knock things aroubd and see if i can find something loose. In the meantime I've been looking up the symptoms and some posts mention the heat shield, but since it isn't rev specific I don't think that's it. Any ideas anyone?
  10. Hey All! Reposting my first post from touring/adventure touring - thought this forum would see more activity. Here it is: 7/18/17 Hello Thumper Talk Community! This is my first post here, just created my account a few minutes ago. I apologize if I violate any type of forum rules or formatting, but I'm sure I'll learn as I go. To begin with: I've been riding dirtbikes since I was 8. I am currently a 19 year old University student in upstate NY, and I am riding a 2006 Honda XR650L that I bought myself when I turned 16. I've attached pictures of it (taken today, as I wrote this post) to illustrate the condition it is in, what it looks like, etc. While I have been riding for an extremely long time, and consider myself a safe and competent rider, I have a very limited mechanical knowledge of motorcycles. My dad introduced me to bikes and taught me to ride, but my riding experience over the years has been on my own, and my mechanical knowledge is self-taught and basic maintenance of my bike at best - nothing fancy whatsoever. He and I don't really speak anymore, and therefore I don't have any type of guidance or reference points when it comes to bike mechanics (or mechanics of any kind, for that matter). Nevertheless, I am very interested in modifying and improving my bike and possibly beginning a project to convert it into a café racer or scrambler-esque bike. I rarely go off-road anymore and use my XR as a daily driver, but I find the traction of off-road tires to be favorable and have never had street tires. Therefore I'm debating whether or not to keep my off-road tires (or get different ones), making the bike more of a scrambler - or to use street tires making it more of a café racer. If I'm using terminology wrong and have no idea what the f**k I'm talking about, then please always feel free to correct me. I am using Daniel Peter's custom XR650L café racer, and Ready Moto's brat/cafe racer as inspiration. I think both are beautiful bikes/rebuilds, and want something very similar as my final product. However, I think Daniel Peter's bike is tricked out in a very expensive (and unnecessary to me) way (i.e. antelope seat, c'mon dude). I also want to preserve my passenger seat and pegs, if possible. I have absolutely no idea where to start, and have no current access to welding or fabrication machines of any kind. I'm asking for a full walkthrough and as much help as you all are willing to give me. Because I'm in school, I have a very limited budget. Basically, I'm willing to do my short term modifications and enhancements, and probably put the conversion project on hold until the spring. This is particularly dependent upon the advice I get. I don't need the bike as much in the fall, because I live on my college campus, but it's nice to have around in working condition (I know the project would require pulling it all apart and not riding for a while). So if any part I need for this is expensive but necessary, I will save up for it and make it happen. If there are cheaper, reasonable alternatives to achieve the same goal, then I will do that. I'd appreciate all advice along those lines. I just replaced my battery two weeks ago, and am going to attempt to replace the brake pads (a simple job, I know, but with luck/mechanical ability like mine, it can be quite daunting!) The chain is new, the frame has been reinforced at certain points, but everything else is stock! What I Want Out of This Bike (Short Term) 1. I'd like to put the battery underneath the seat - what are the benefits/disadvantages of this? To my knowledge it'll just slim the profile of the bike when I take off side paneling and prevent the battery from getting wet or as damaged in a drop. 2. I want to clean it up, particularly the rusted parts, and possibly repaint/replace them to make sure the bike looks better. (Need guidance for this, as I'm unsure how to remove rust/how to go about repainting parts - why I posted pics, so hopefully this community can identify where my "problem areas" are on this bike). 3. Learn how to properly winterize and maintain bike. Currently I check oil regularly, fill it with premium gas, lube the chain once or a week or more, and wash it (probably not enough) and spray WD-40 on various pieces. If I'm an incompetent fool, tell me. 4. Replace footpegs, throttle, handgrips. 5. If feasible with my current bike, put in a circular (brighter) headlight instead of the stock square one. Am willing to get rid of red plastic housing, or find an alternative. What I Want Out of This Bike (Long Term) 1. A full café-racer type conversion, styled similar to what I linked above. My dream "bought brand new" bike currently is a Triumph Bonneville converted to a scrambler (provided a pic) to let y'all know what I'm interested in, aesthetically. 2. Switch out stock carb (40mm) with a 41mm Keihin FCR-MX flat slide. I've been doing lots of reading, and it looks like this will drastically improve bike performance and throttle response in many ways, not limited to AFR and starting. I know nothing about AFR...or carbs. 3. Repaint the sucker! I've read online various opinions, the main camps seem to be either (a) don't do it yourself, have a professional do it or (b) you can do it yourself very carefully. Sorry for the giant wall of text, I appreciate those who have read this far. Please ask any questions, give comments, critiques, advice, anything! I look forward to hearing what the TT Community has to say. Cheers! John UPDATE 07/22/17 I replaced both front and rear brake pads because I had irresponsibly been using very worn-down ones, and the friction subsequently wore down my rotors. Not bad enough to replace rotors (thank goodness, I'm too cheap for that right now), but still negligent on my part. Started taking the most rusted bolts out and WD40+steel wool scrubbing them, then putting grease on. I don't have any never-seize, but I'll get some at some point. For now, grease should suffice. Going to wash the bike soon, scrub everything down and then get to polishing up....everything!
  11. Selling my CB750 brat build for a dual sport and want to go the scrambler route. Decided on the xr650 and looking at one with a 'new top end' but unsure what it's worth (as well as if it's a riskier purchase than one with 'no known issues.' Attached is a picture of the bike and the invoice from the shop that the current owner passed along. Should I pass based on the repair (or that fact the the owner over-heated it)? If it's still a go, how much should I offer? Is the oil cooler a must now? Thanks in advance from a newbie!
  12. I had my ACR break off of the exhaust cam and it seems to be irreparable. I'm wondering if anyone has some good leads on finding a replacement as Kawasaki no longer makes them. Maybe looking for a parts motor?
  13. Took my bike out the other day and it made it about an hour and a half before dying as I was coming to a stop. I got it running and going around a hard corner it died and started leaking fuel out the overflow valve. Took the carb out on the trail flipped it upside down blew into the fuel line and was blocked, put it right side up and could blow into it freely. Now it dies intermittently, no pattern whatsoever. I managed to get it back to my truck but it was dying at random regardless of RPM, speed, hard bumps, if I was at WOT for more than 10-15 seconds it would die. I've got it home and taken apart but everything looks great except for the diaphragm, which I've never had a CV carb before so I'm unsure how it is supposed to look. This seems worn out to me, could I get a second opinion? I've checked that the float isn't filling up (is air tight), was adjusted correctly etc... The oddest part is a buddy I was riding with had a problem with a sticking float while we were out as well, but a few taps with a wrench freed his up and he was on his marry way...
  14. Hello guys I'm new here. I just want to get more information before I decide what to buy. I like the drz400 but the seat height is like 930mm or 950mm ? I'm 5ft8 (33in inseam) 35.5in with boots My friend got drz400s and I tried to sit on the seat Like this one there is actually no issue but I can barely touch the ground with my full foot I stand with my toes Is there anything I can do to decrease the seatheight by 2in's or more? that would be cool Or I should get drz650 which is the seat length is 880mm ? I really didn't like the 650

  16. Anybody have and willing to share a copy of their manual for XR650L? I have a CLYMER manual but this one I saw was complete from every nut and bolt and back.If you're out there and you know the manual I'm talking about hollah
  17. Hey Thumpers, I am swapping forks and need to know what triple clamps / tripple trees will also fit the 93-96 KLX650r forks. Through some research it looks like KLX300 and pre 09 KLX250 clamps will also fit. But given the ambiguous name of these parts (triple/tripple trees/clamps) doing a search to get good info is difficult. And many of the clamps I am finding for sale are rather expensive so just want to make sure I am getting the right part before pulling the trigger. Thanks for your help!
  18. Hey guys, looking for some help here. I'm interested in buying a 1993 KLR650 i found on craigslist. The owner says that compression is good, but that there is no spark at the spark plug. Any idea what could be wrong with it? any experience with this before? I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty. I'm excited about having a project, but i don't want to dump a bunch of money into it. All I can think of is grounding issues, maybe a bad stator, or oil in the spark plug wells from pad valve covers. Anyway, i'm a noob when it comes to motorcycles. Any ideas how i could find out what the problem is or anything to check for when i go look at the bike? Thanks!
