  1. Just picked up a 2004 XR 650L with 34K miles that is immaculate. It still has the smog on it. The California version of the bike. I had a 93 that I recently had to send to moto heaven and the smog was off it. It ran pretty well and I am wondering what is the benefit of taking the smog off? Does it increase horsepower? Does it make the bike backfire? Is there a right and wrong way to do it? I appreciate anyone's input on this matter as I am on the fence. Cheers, Team Late
  2. Hi all just got myself a Yz426 2001. It Was hard to start cold and backfired a lot and after I read all there is to read I thought i should start with checking the timing and the valves. I removed everything and realized the camwheel markings where off but the cam stood in what looked like was the correct place. Can the cam slip from the wheel or is it some other cam or what might have happen? Should I get a new intake cam? Its in TDC below pictures in when I have aligned the intakewheel. When I got it it looked the same but the Exhaustwheel Was aligned and the intake wrong. Please some ideas what might have happen, is it better to align the exhaust or the intake? Cams positioned as manual position of the wheel for above picture How the cam looks when the Exhaust markers are in place and Intake almost in place should been even more downwardsexhaust wheel aligned.
  3. Hey guys, I’ve got a 2011 kx250f and when I go to kickstart it, it pops and shoots flames out the exhaust. The only way it starts is if you bump start it behind something for a minute or two. Any ideas on what it is..
  4. So just got a 2007 XR650l from a guy in Florida about a month ago. Looks like all the mods had been done on it. The first few times i rode it it ran pretty good, I live in Chattanooga TN so its no that much of an elevation change I guess. As I kept riding it I started to notice it backfiring on deceleration. It started doing it a fair amount, and so I thought it might be running lean. I decided to take the carb apart and clean it. I got to taking it apart and looking it over and if found that the gasket at the float bowl was really grimy and corroded looking, it kind of looked like rust, but i was able to scrape most of it off. The slide looked like it had black scorch marks on areas of it, there was also a little rough spot on the lower part of the slide (I wish I had pictures) Then I made sure to clean out the jets. I sprayed them with cleaner, and then ran a guitar string through them. Even though i now the gasket needs to be replaced, I decided to put it back together and take it for a test ride, because I thought the main problem was a clogged jet. When i took it out it seemed like it had better throttle response and would pick up a little better, and at first the pop wasn't happening on the deceleration. But unfortunately as I rode it a little more the pop started to come back, although it did seem like they were a little less frequent. So my questions are: Is the worn slide a thing, and if so, should i get a new slide, or is it normal for sides to have wear like that? Can the corroded float bowl gasket ring let air in and cause for it to be lean, and therefore backfire? Thanks for anything!
  5. I have a 110cc Chinese pit bike. I just put a brand new top end and carburetor on it. When I kick it over air comes out of the carburetor, but I took off the intake manifold and it was sucking air in like it's supposed to from the head. So I'm guessing it's not a valve or timing problem. Please help me out, thank you.
  6. Hey guys! Bike: Suzuki RMZ 450 2009 Sometimes when I kick start the bike, the kickstarter lever shoots right back up when almost all the way down right as it ignites one time and almost break my foot. This does not happen when I take off the spark plug cap. I have shimmed the valves very carefully and the bike starts easy but I am afraid to kick start at all because the kicstarter lever can break my foot. So I only bump start. Anyone have a clue what this could be?
  7. I recently bought a KTM 400 EXC 2007 and I drove it for a while and noticed it backfires a lot when decaccel as well when revving and letting go while in idle. I have tried configuring the fuel screw but doesnt seem to help. Does turning the screw in increase richness or lean it? Can it be clogged jets or wrong float level? Or is this simply normal? Please help.
  8. I removed the smog off my 04 650 XRL. When I was going down the frwy really moving(85+mph) the bike randomly starts acting like it's starved for gas. The carb was just rebuilt and float has been set correctly. I would think it was just starved for gas but I had a 93 650xrl and it did the same thing. The snorkel has been removed. It happens just randomly, I was on about a 40 mile frwy maiden voyage and It just cuts out like it's gonna stall. I slow down to about 65-70 and it stops doing it. The one minor thing I changed was I took the long breather hose off the tank and put a short one way valve. It's really got me baffled. Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks, TL
  9. Revs good when giving throttle, but when release the throttle it bludders and small back fires. When cold 100%ok, after 2-3minuts it starts, and worse when hot. 80hours. New piston and cam chain 10hours ago. No errors in app. Some maps better then others. Anyone get any ideas?
  10. Recently bought a 2009 kx250f, got it to stop backfiring after raising the jet needle a bunch and turning the fuel screw out about 4 turns, put a 188 instead of a 180 main jet in and it backfires worse now but only on low RPM deceleration after hard acceleration, valves are all in spec.
  11. My 2005 525 EXC backfires and pops when I close the throttle and slow down. I also have a new issue when closing the throttle the RPMs do not drop off. The RPMs will drop down after a brief delay. I have had the bike to an independent KTM specific shop and they have re-worked all the jetting. The bike ran pretty well after they re-worked the carb. However, it continued to backfire. Not badly, just a little bit. I have a friend with an 07 450 EXC and his bike never backfires. This engine has been completely rebuilt, new cylinder, rod and bearings, new crank bearings, new piston, rings, valves. All stock OEM KTM parts except the rod. I have attempted to find an air leak and so far I find nothing. I brought the bike back to the shop to replace the shift shaft and seal and asked them to look into the backfire. They did some adjusting and it was a little better. MY MAIN ISSUE AND QUESTION: The shop keeps telling me the reason I am having trouble is the fuel. They tell me that if I was running race fuel it would not deteriorate the rubber bits in the carb and my tuning issues would be resolved. Does this make sense to anyone on this forum? Has anyone had similar issues? What was the fix? My friend and his 07 450 do not have these problems and I know he runs pump gas. I am going to bring the bike back again and see what it takes to get it to run properly. Please share your experience, insight, technical diagnostics. I want to root out the problem and make it go away for good. Happy forth of July. Take the time to thank a soldier for your freedom today. We are fortunate to be able to pursue our passions.
