  1. First off, the title says it all. There is no guarantee that this is the problem your bike might be having, but i wanted to post my experience about my bike's issues that took me a few months to research, fix, and diagnose, in hope that it will help anyone with the same issues. Here were the issues on my bike.... It was a used 2005 450X that i picked up in October that had sat for about six months because the rider broke his back. The bike was well maintained (regular oil and filter changes, etc) and it looked pretty dang good for being 12 years old. I got a good deal on it especially because of all the extras on it (guards, exhaust, extra parts, etc). However, when I ran it, it idled good but bogged like heck unless i left the choke on. I figured this was normal considering the fuel sat in the carb for 6 months. Anyways I ended up buying it in hope that a good carb clean would do it.... NOPE, not even several cleans. Next, I assumed getting a carb rebuild kit would do it.... also a "no" So next, I brought it to honda dealer and shelled out hundreds of dollars, but still no fix. (side note: the mechanics there were fantastic and they gave me some free hours of work but they were just checking essentially everything besides the carb, because we had decided the carb was not the issue for some reason.) I was getting frustrated, and went back to the carb.... i got it, it must be the jetting. I had always been curious about it especially considering that the bike had the typical air mods (no snorkel, full FMF system, no cage and screen, twin air, etc.) and all the jetting and AP stuff was Stock. So I cracked down and got the JD jetting kit and a smaller leak jet, and did all that business. Now the bike is running awesome and I love it. I would love to hear your guys' comments, etc, and I hope this may have been helpful. Im trying not to cross post, but am posting this because when I was doing all my research I did not find anything specifically down this alley (not to say there isn't, i just didn't find it) If anyone has questions i would love to try to answer them my best. Good riding to you all!
  2. Okay. I'm stumped. I have a 2017 ktm 250 xc-w. Bought it a year ago, second hand, and the jetting with the Mikuni has never been spot on. I finally decided to figure it out, and came across many posts claiming that the old Keihin model is much less finicky than the new Mikuni. Lo and behold, a kid near me was parting out his 2010 ktm, with a 36mm Keihin, so I snatched it up. I cleaned the carb the other day, and today I installed it. Full disclosure, it came with a 160 main, and I drilled it equivalent to a 172. I know, I know, drilling jets is considered a felony, but it's the only way I could test it then and there. The bike seemed to idle very rich at first (White smoke though. I have other reasons to believe I'm burning coolant, but that's a story for another time. Ran like that for a while.) It smoked a ton, and had a large burble if the throttle was snapped from idle. I took it for a little ride around the yard, through two or three gears, and when I parked the idle seemed MUCH better. Still a tiny lag, but nothing real unusual. Seemed to run better than the Mikuni already. I played with the airscrew for a bit, and found a nice responsive spot, maybe 2 turns out, but then all of a sudden the idle started to get faster and faster (kind of like a lean hanging idle). I killed the bike, started it again, and it did the same thing. Now it won't start at all. Just turns over and never fires. Figured maybe clogged pilot jet. I pulled the carb back off, and the pilot and main jets both look free of debris. I have fairly fresh gas in the tank, and my plug has never given me issues. Bike always ran rich, so it was a bit fouled, but I cleaned it up during the carb swap. I can't think of any other important details, but does anyone have any clue what the heck could be going on? Thanks! Jetting @ 2,000ft: Keihin pwk 36mm 40 pilot 172 main n1ei needle, 3rd clip 7.0mm float height Airscrew ~2 turns out

    Ttr110 bog

Ive got a brand new 110 that came with an after market exhaust from factory. It bogged at the dealership and i figured it was cuz the frigid cold of december. Ive been riding it and the bog wont go away even after its fully warmed. Its from idle to wide open. Runs like a trash fire without choke and will backfire goin down the road using engine brake. I took the air box apart and tried runnin it without the filter to no avail. Im just trynna get good doin wheelies and it wont let me god damnit
  4. My klx400r/drz400e will not idle seems way too lean pops at closed throttle severe on deceleration. I've read hours and hours on TT and other sites for years before getting the courage to jet and fix my no idle hang idle and now I've made it worse jd jet kit 3x3 ce removed and 2 ports connected 1 plugged everything else the way i bought it used I recently found the o ring and washer was missing from the fuel screw Installed oe washer and oring from rmatvmc 1,500 to 3,500 elevation 2.75 turn fs 162 mj 45 pj Blue jd needle -4 I took a 180 mj out that someone installed but tbh it ran better before jd kit! It now has a bog sometimes that I didnt have with bottomed out stock needle and 180 mj I ride 100% offroad mostly single track or with my kid so slowish I'm ready to sell this green drz and go back to a 2t. HELP
  5. First time posting on here. Forgive me if it’s in the wrong place. Have a Tao tap db17 that’s started bogging on the very low end of throttle. Cleaned carb, just adjusted valves to .004 and I think .005 on intake valve. Have fiddled the air fuel screw in every way and havnt been able to get rid of it. Almost dies with choke on and idles strong without it. Any input appreciated! I’m thinking maybe an intake leak? Or possible rejetting. Thanks!!
  6. My 2007 yz125 bogs when i quickly open the throttle all the way. It can rev up if i do it slow and slightly fast. But when i do it quick to check the response. It tends to bog. When i was riding in soft ground and some sand the other day i tend to open the throttle up real quick but sometimes it bogs and almost dies. I also adjusted the air screw during riding. When i went two turns out it tends to bog a lot more but as i go in more to about 1 to 1.5 turns out it bogged less but its still there. Is it running too lean?. Also when im reving up high and trying to hit the powerband it bogs. It feals like theres no top end power. It revs up high then looses it and bogs then revs up high then looses it then revs up high etc... Temp:40-50 degrees Fahrenheit (weather is still cool up here in indiana) Mainjet: 410 Pilot jet: 35 Needle position: 3rd (middle) Is it the powervalve causing the bad top end power. Or is it the jetting thats causing the bog when i quicjly open the throttle and when im reving high? If so what jetting do you guys recommend for my 2007 yz125. Note: i also cleaned my carb recently and i actually changed the needle position from 2nd and down 1 to the 3rd(middle) to let in more gas. But before when needle was at 2nd position the bike didnt really bog. But the idle screw was screwed really far in lifting the slide quite alot (and even then it had hard time keeping idle) and the fuel/air screw was at 2 turns out. It sounded like it ran decent though. But i decided to move the needle to the 3rd position and i was able to let out the idle screw to where the slide was almost closed all the way. And it was able to idle. But now it kinda idled high but i just need to let out the idle screw a bit more closing the slide more. So atleast now the slide isnt opened alot to keep the idle. The only thing is, now i have to put the fuel/air screw to 1 to 1.5 to get good response. I also checked my reeds when i cleaned the carb and yes, light peaked through. I will need to replace the reeds but while i replace the reeds i want to get jets too but im not sure if i need richer jets and which jets to get. Or are jets not the cause to my problem? Sorry for the long post but just want to make sure i get everything out so you guys can troubleshoot my problem easier!
  7. New to riding and working on them I have 07 crf250r that would have a serious bog issue when u snap the throttle so I got a jd jetting kit so I put the red needle in at the 5th clip position and it had me put a 185 main jet in but now it seems to have more of a bog I also put in a tusk fuel mixture screw in as well how many turns out do you typically have the fuel mixture screen out also i seen that the bottom of the carb had a quickshot 2 in it would that mean that I wouldn't need to replace my leak jet? Sorry if I am doing this whole forum thing wrong just trying to find answers
  8. Hello everyone! I recently bought my first "big boi" bike which is a RMZ250 2004. It has a pro circuit ti4 exhaust on it. Before that Ive ridden and worked on pit bikes. FYI I am a high school. So when I got this bike there was no compression so like anyone would do I checked the valve clearance it was pretty off and I fixed it and now it has a lot of compression. I started it with starter fluid and then turned on the gas and it started idling. It was kinda stuttering so I used a carb clean to clean all of the jets and used compressed air to blow out passages. Now when I twist the throttle it has good response and comes right back on idle but when riding when I go 50% throttle it just bogs. I checked the vacuum plate and its ok, I rechecked the timing and everything. It runs good on choke but on choke the idle is bad. I am pretty sure its not a case of false air. I have a 175 main jet, 42 pilot jet and 4 clips on obeks needle and 2 turns out on fuel mix screw. any ideas appreciated!
  9. Hey, I recently bought my friends 2011 KX250F (efi) because it won’t rev up past around 1/2 throttle without bogging while its under load, he couldn’t figure it out, even a small engine mechanic couldn’t figure it out. I’m just wondering if someone else has had this problem with the same bikes and what the problem was. Thanks!
  10. My sons kx100 developed a random bog during his race. He said it was bogging in the max and middle throttle range. Does anyone have an idea why this would start while riding?
  11. So my 09 KX250F had started to bog when I open the throttle really quickly so I thought I needed to clean the carb so I did. Put it back together and it still does it. So now I replaced every jet in it inspected the AP diaphragm and adjusted AP and it's still doing it. Everything seems to be fine. I'm in NE Ohio elevation is 0-1500 ft about 60 degrees right now. My jetting specs are Main - 180 Pilot - 42 Needle - NHJT Clip Position - 4th from top Fuel screw - 2 turns out If anyone could PLEASE help me this is mind boggling to me. Thank you Enclosed is a video to what it does. https://youtu.be/dxkedcr2iMg
  12. Hi, New to this site, I am currently having problems with my recently purchased 2004 Yz250 2t, when i first got the bike it had trouble starting and possible carb issues, so i sent it to a local bike mechanic. Got the bike back 2 weeks later, he cleaned carb on bike and done some other small bits that arent related to this problem. The starting isues were resovled by useing the correct sparkplug and it now idles great however midrange to high revs its useless, not hitting power band atall, today i took it out and really tryed to give it some beans to see if it was clogged with somthing that it could maybe spit out (bad decision I am not bike smart) It proceeded to backfire and stall out, hasnt started since, (still has compression and is not siezed) Any help would be very appreciated!
  13. Hello all, Thanks to Thumpertalk I dared to plunge into the deep and do a rebuild of the top-end of my 2012 YZ250 myself. 10hrs and still going strong. But the reason I did the rebuild (other than that the time has come), was that there was also another issue that I was hoping to fix. I'll walk you through the symptoms: Start up of the bike (cold) in cold or hot weather w choke. (PS: I think the problem is a little better in cold weather) Bike starts up in one kick if kicked correctly. The bike smokes, but normal amount to a 2stroke. After a 10 or so seconds, when I blip the throttle, ALOT of smoke comes from the exhaust (white smoke). It also doesn't ping but bogs (bwaaa) when I go on the throttle. Sometimes its so severe that it dies during the bog. When I start my ride on the track, the bike doesn't ping and I don't have much power + still excessive smoke. But when I hold the throttle WIDE OPEN for 10 or so seconds, then it starts to 'clear out' and begins to haul *ss. The smoke also disappears and the engine starts to ping again. The bike runs fine after that while its cleared out on the track. I thought this was a sign that I should change the top end (30hrs, novice) and clean the carburetor. What did I do: Completely clean and dissasembly the carburetors and jets. Change the piston, rings, gaskets,.... Replace spark plug. The problem seemed to be gone the first time that I started the bike after the rebuild (first kick yeahah!). But it quickly came back and is even identical to before the rebuild. Now I thought the cause is the following: Crankshaft seal leak at the clutch side. --> But I just checked my transmission fluid after 4-6hrs of riding and it's 650cm³ after the 750cm² I filled it with. That seems to be about normal consumption, no? Coolant leakage somewhere inside the combustion chamber --> Triple checked: not losing coolant. The following suspects: Float height Crankseal leakage Pilot jet wrong (I checked that the standard one is installed). I'm at a dead-end here. I don't have the friends with the knowledge to ask these questions to. But I'm laying my faith in the hands of thumpertalk :). If there is something I can do to test something for you guys, let met know. Kind regards, Dries This is the me, my bike and the issue (it got a bit worse over time :p). Yes I know I shouldn't be so hard on the throttle when I start it, but for one time its not bad and it was necessary to show the problem.

My 2 stroke dirtbike runs when it wants to sometimes it starts and idles but when you put it in gear it bogs out. Any ideas on why this is happening?
  15. My Ride: 2009 KX450F Ok, took a trip to Silver Lake dunes in MI. Ran into some engine problems. Background: I had been trail riding this bike for a bunch of rides leading up to this day with no performance issues. New to me bike this April, sat for months, didn't actually start riding it until a few weeks ago really. I have never washed the air filter. It was oiled and washed by the previous owner though and he took care of it pretty meticulously and knew bikes. Leading up to my dune ride, even with a bunch of trail riding, still didn't wash the air filter (and still no engine problems). Dune ride Day 1: rolled in, in the afternoon, but didn't have time to put on filter skins I had. Rode for about 2 hours, no problems. Dune ride Day 2: late start, but did some prep in the lot before riding. Don't know if any of this matters, but the only notable thing I did with air filter was put a FRESHLY OILED AND WET skin over my air filter. I know, it should've been dry, but I didn't prep the night before, but didn't want to ride all day with no skin. I think it being wet/oiled actually attracted more sand. Perhaps a better alternative for sand riding is a DRY air filter and a DRY filter skin. Still protection, but sand won't stick to it. I don't really get why air filters are oiled anyways. I get that the idea is to make stuff harder to pass thru filter and make it stick, but it seems like a catch 22 cuz it will cause it to get dirtier cuz it's attracting dirt. Sort of like a lubed up chain will attract dirt and grime on it. Anyways, didn't really have any notable spills/wrecks (had some easy drops), so perhaps that's how sand entered airbox, but anyways. The bike worked great for the first few hours. Then, out of nowhere, it started to get boggy, or feel like it was bogging. It's FI, so it shouldn't be bogging, but that's the best way to describe it. The bike wasn't giving me any power. I figured (hoped) it was low on gas, so I parked it for a while, walked down grabbed my gas and fueled up. This was a windy day, so perhaps sand accumulated a bit while riding and then while sitting there waiting for gas. Gassed up, but the engine only got worse. Got so bad, I could barely go across flat ground in 1st gear (grades I coulda lugged EASILY in 4th gear and powered around). I mean, I was wide open in 4th/5th tearing around. I rode back down and cut it off. Haven't touched it since. I'm not sure where to start or how to troubleshoot on this one. I've never gotten into the airbox/FI system. I'm not sure what happened to the engine (sand in cylinder maybe, scratched walls, rings lost seal, maybe it's just a dirty air filter, but considering it's been ridden dirty without cleaning whatsoever, shouldn't be that). When I opened airbox last night to check for sand, there was some gunk around the edges, but to me it didn't seem like anything that woulda killed my engine like it did. The air filter was still relatively clean. Even the skin over the filter was relatively clean. Any idea what's wrong? What should I check? I'm afraid to start it and let it exacerbate problems.
  16. Hey y’all, this is my first time posting anything and I’ve done quite a bit of google searches already and found what I felt like was plenty of information but I can’t seem to resolve this issue. My kids have a couple of Automatic SSR 70’s but they are both having the same exact problem even though I’ve only tried adjustments to one of them. Every time you give them throttle (particularly full throttle) they bog down before speeding up and I’d say about 50% of the time they just cut off. I’ve cleaned the carb, verified the jets have no debris, checked the spark plug (looked like it was running rich), cleaned the air filter, adjusted the idle screw, adjusted the float, and adjusted the external mixture screw. The bikes are basically brand new and at one point the bike worked again for like an hour but went back to bogging. The carb is a 16mm Jing Ke and only has two internal jets (Main and Pilot) and one externally adjusted one that I think is the air mixture for the Pilot jet. Any thoughts or does anyone know what kind of adjustments I could make to the carburetor to fix this? Or maybe it’s not the carb at this point? Thanks in advance!
  17. I have a 2006 yz 125 and been putting a lot more hours on it than before. I notice today it wasn’t starting first kick as it usually does but it was riding fine otherwise till it started bogging out. If I was in high rpms it would stay alive but if i slowed down it would die out. Any ideas on what might be wrong?
  18. Hi All, So I've had this bike about a year now and have slowly gotten it to run perfectly here in Austin, TX. Excellent throttle response, sounded great, only slight slight backfire on decel. The carb was absolutely dialed in for the bike and local conditions for the past 6 or so months until having this current issue. I then changed the throttle tube and grips before riding again, as well as stupidly put gas in it from a tank that may have been sitting for a couple weeks. Went to ride, started up first kick, sounded great. Rode the track for a bit, 3-4 laps, and then right in the middle of a table-top it sputtered and stalled...almost went over the handle bars 😬 Get it back to the pits, turn it off, come back to it a couple of minutes later and she starts back up first kick. However, now if I give it anything past idle it backfires like crazy, has no power behind it and just won't run right except for perfect start and idle. Get it back home and tear it apart, found the accelerator pump lever had snapped off, so I figured this was my culprit. Swapped it out and its a tiny bit better, but still essentially the same issues with starting perfectly and idling, but total backfire craziness if any throttle is applied. So then I began going through all the parts I thought could have an affect: -Drained potentially bad gas, put fresh in; No change -Checked timing; At spec -Checked valve clearances; Within spec -Checked Accelerator Pump to ensure strong stream, did O-ring mod with #78 O-ring; At spec -Checked spark plug; Not fowled, but swapped with new iridium anyways -Tested spark; Looks solid, good sized blue/purple arcs -Grounded out Neutral Switch to see if any difference with timing/rev limit; Nothing -Unplugged TPS to see if any difference; Nothing -Checked carb boot attached to cylinder head; No holes or major cracks, just very small surface crack, 1-2 of them. -Swapped CDI with known working 2009 YZ250F; No change -Checked hot start, which was upgraded to Tokyo Mods aluminum body, seemed everything should be okay, but put new O-Ring on to ensure air tight; No change At this point I'm really scratching my head...I took the carb off again and am going to go through it just to be sure everything is absolutely pristine on the inside, but suspect it is as I use an inline fuel filter and meticulously clean the bike after each run. The carb was also completely taken apart about 6 months ago and re-jetted, which is why its been so solid ever since. Zero starting/running issues. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! I have 2 2009 YZ250F's that both run perfectly, so I feel like I can swap parts from them to try and rule stuff out if needed too. Thanks ya'll!
  19. I have a 2002 yz85 with a dep expansion chamber and dep end can, pretty sure my bike is running on standard jets but the bike seems really boggy at the low end and spits out so much oil from the exhaust does anyone know what jets to run for the dep pipes?
  20. Having issues with bog on my crf150rb when jumping only. By the time I hit the ground there is no power. It would probably die if the forward momentum didn’t help restart the engine. I bought the bike second hand and had to fix many parts on the carb. When on the ground in flat areas it runs really well. Wondering if anyone else here has had this issue. Maybe I’m missing a part on the carb, or it needs a rebuild. Perhaps better settings? Maybe fuel flow issues. Also the vacuum tubes that come out of the head of the engine have been damaged by the exhaust, could this be the culprit? I’m not sure what they do? Any pointers would be helpful. Thanks Paul Crf150rb
  21. I have an 2006 yz125 that is fairly low hour. It ran fine when I bought it then one day started to bog. I have tried everything I can think of, new carburetor, new spark plug, switches cdi, switched coil, switched stator, changed reeds, made sure nothing was plugging exhaust, rebuilt top end. If there is anything else I could try can someone let me know, help would be greatly appreciated. The link is to a video of the bogging. https://youtu.be/C-bssmWh2ag
  22. Chasing down this bog on this crf. New vaccum plate seal, all new jets including leak jet. Put a billet hot start nut and an easy adjust air fuel screw. They all should be stock sized jets but I cant confirm off top of my head. AP diaphram looked okay, no visible rips, just some wear around edges. So I will make it squirt, trying to adjust timing, and it will push some fuel up to the adjuster when i release it. Fuel is leaking up where the throttle cables attach at the AP adjuster rod. Bike runs good idles alright just has a slight hang. Straight bog when you jab the throttle when riding it. Roll onto it and she will pull. So if fuel is leaking there is the diaphram leaking?? Should I get a larger leak from whatever the stock is? P/O replaced every jet with a kit so I'm assuming they are all factory sized. The AP o rings are definitely worn out as well as the diaphram. It is squirting pretty good, but I cant seem to get the timing good enough... the factory zero marks are gone along with the TPS marks, but I have set the tps to about 700... I've never messed with AP but this is the source of the problem. Getting sick of tearing this thing down again and again. Thanks guys!
  23. Alright, so I got this Xr250r. When I first got it, it ran good for one day then all of a sudden started bogging at 50-80% throttle. Ive tried everything so far over these last couple months, and it turns out going down 2 sizes in the main jet got rid of that problem, and now it only bogs at 10-40% throttle. Should I try changing the slow jet? And if I do, should I go up or down for the slow jet? Also, the guy who had the bike before removed the whole baffle, and cut down the spark arrestor.
  24. Probably a dumb question but i need to know, my yz125 starts up and runs great but whenever i take it around the block, about halfway around when i slow down it boggs when i have the clutch in and try taking off after doing a rolling stop (i am not in too high of a gear i know how to ride). I bought jets for it for my elevation and how the climate is where i live. I just wanna be able to ride and not worry about if i’m gonna make it home or not. Any help is appreciated
  25. Hey everyone. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with this problem. My bike (2000 XR250R) starts first kick, idles great, but as soon as you hit half throttle (any gear) it bogs and has no power. This only happens at half throttle. 1/4 throttle and full throttle works great. Any idea what the problem is?
