  1. Hell all. New member here. Figured after a few years of navigating the TT forums i would make an account, for input on my current situation. I just got a 98 XR600R from my father who last rode it maybe 6 years ago. About 3 years ago i was told i could have the bike if i got it running. I took the bike and cleaned the carb, tried kicking it over and nothing. After a good carb cleaning, got it to run but not very well. Found an issue with the auto decompression system. I removed the asm from the cam and had the hole filled. After that it ran better but still not good. I then took it to the shop i work at and tore it down to the piston. Not realizing before, choke plate broke off and found itseay inside the cylinder and did some head damage. After finding this i boxed it up and havent touched it until recently. Got the bike out, inspected everything and found only damage to the head, light marking. Cleaned it up and slapped everything back together and cannot get the bike to run at all, and when it does, its gutless. Checked timing several times, cam is good. Its off a half tooth either direction. I do have the cam in the right orientation, not 180 out. When it does run its noisy, like super loose valves. Couldnt ever figure out the cause. I decided to out money into this bike and got the following, new cam chain, new coil and plug, new hot cam stage one, new hot shot cdi box, new ricky stator 200w stator, kibble white titanium spring kit, 100mm 10.5 to 1 JE piston and XRs only new carb kit, the non pumper. I decided to overhaul the bike to get it running, then as winter comes tear it all apart and clean up the frame and other parts. Im looking for any input for people who built there bikes with performance parts as these and there experiences in doing so. And just looking for general guidance along the way, helping restore and build a classic. Pictures if interest.

  3. I am in the process of restoring my trusty 2007 450 EXC and just thought I'd document some of the things I did. If anyone has any questions, let me know. A little back story first. This bike has been absolutely great for years first of all but around 4 years ago even though I had a dirt tricks belleville washer and red loctite, the front sprocket bolt fell out on a two day Nevada ride. Made it back ok but the countershaft splines were starting to wear. Fast forward to 2019 and the CS gave out on me on a big hill climb in the middle of Nevada. Towed out 5 miles and luckily all was OK. I have since bought a 2019 500 EXC but decided to restore it. With all the Covid stuff happening it has given me time to really clean and polish this whole bike. Here is a photo about a month before the breakdown. Start of the teardown. Don't zoom in to those countershaft splines, it's not pretty. On a side note I had just done a top end 80 hours prior and had roughly 500 hours on it before that. Engine sent to Travis at Thumper Racing in NV for bottom end work and a good lookover. Frame about to be sent out for powder coat. KTM Orange. I wasn't going to even do this but man, might as well since it was apart. $125 locally in my small mountain town. Its funny how this all started when I was only going to really clean the airbox out really well when it was still in the sub-frame, nope. Before.... After... with Purple Power degreaser. You don't realize how dirty and corroded things get. Before.... After... I initially just wanted to clean things up. Scotch brite to header pipe, clean up radiators, decrease and once over everything. Then I learned a few cleaning tips from a guy named Cameron Niemela on YouTube. Then I went out and bought some mag wheel cleaner, a buffing wheel and some Scotch Brite wheels from his Pryme MX site. This is where I think I started beginning to lose it. I had to clean or polish everything. I'm gonna post this before I lose what I have written already. I'll just add stuff as I go on this restore. Stay tuned.
  4. Hey guys I race micro sprint cars and run a 2001 cr250 motor, I have it stroked to 270cc and run a bore diameter of about 68mm. Runs on methanol and its built with lightweight everything and feel I've hit the top as far mods for this thing go but I want to squeeze every inch of power I can out of it. Any suggestions?
  5. Does anyone have any experience putting 6th gear out of an excf450 in an sxf 450 motor. Mine is us spec 5 speed already. Thinking new barrel, shifter fork and gear wheels should do it
  6. I have a 07 kx250 2stroke. I acquired it in pretty bad shape.i can not find a replacment swingarm so I am going to try and fit a swing arm from a later model kawasaki 4 stroke. I also believe If i can make this fit it will help with the horrible frame geometry. If i get a new swingarm the linkage should drop the rear end 1.5 inch and give me 1° of rake angle for the front. Helping diminish the pogostick rear end and hopfully geta front end that can stick to the dirt. Can anyone give me some measurements for where your kawasaki swingarm meets the frame and engine. Also the measurement for the linkage connection. I havent bought the swingarm yet so any 1 that wants to take some measurements can you please give the year and the bike you are measuring... preferably 07-12 kx250f

  8. Hello, I recently got a 1978 yz250 from a swap meet in San Diego. The bike was $500 and is almost complete. I plan on going through the entire bike and mechanically restoring it but I want to make it my every day rider because I've fallen in love with vintage bikes. I usually ride a 2000 yz250 but it's just not cool to me. My question is, what all can I do to this bike to pull more power out of it while remaining reliable, and what chassis upgrades/mods can I do to make it perform better where I ride? (a motocross style track built in some trails by my house) I know it's never gonna outperform my newer bike but I just want to see how far I can take it while still keeping it vintage. I'm only 17 so go easy on me 😂 I'm new to this game. I know that I can port the cylinder and do head work as well as a pipe but what about boring the cylinder? Are there aftermarket reeds? What are some suspension swaps I can do? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I'll upload some pics as soon as I get the bike up here to Washington. Thanks!
  9. I got a bike and have been loving every minute of it. I have learned alot in the past few weeks but I am sorely lacking internal engine knowledge, gearing, and electrical. Does anyone know where and what engine I can buy (preferably) unassembled? I need to see the inner workings, really get an intimate knowledge of it so I can properly diagnose and maintain my bike and future bikes. Must have gears so I can learn the whole transmission thing lol. I dont care much to mess with 2 strokes atm so I'm thinking a 4 stroke engine is what I should get? And idk anything about electricity on a bike/engine but if that can be a part of it I'd also want that. Please assist me, I am new to this mechanic and biking world but it's got me hooked and I need to dive in and get a better understanding. Fyi...the cheaper the better lol
  10. Hello, it's finally come time for me to build my YZ400E. I have a 250 of the same year that's going to be turned into my everyday bike so I've decided to build this bike into a modern 450 killer. I know it's never going to be as fast around a track, the suspention, frame, and brakes will never let me do that. But if I line up against one of my friends on a brand new 450 on a streight gravel road I want to destroy them. I'm gonna keep the bike looking old and beat up but I'm gonna fully rebuild the engine and chassis. My question for you guys is how do I make rediculous power out of this thing? How do I get a high top speed and quick acceleration? I have about 1k to spend on this thing so give me your suggestions. Thanks.
  11. I have an 04 cr85 frame. I am either in search of a motor(which seems to be impossible to find these days) or suggestions to what other motor I could fit in it without fabricating the frame if possible. Also, I have a complete rm 80 motor that needs rebuilt. Should I rebuild it and fabricate it onto the frame? Thanks!
