  1. What tools are needed to change out my leaky fork seals?I have been reading that bushings wear out also, what bushings should I order? Thanks for all the help.
  2. I've not long picked up a 88 cr500 it's my first 500 and I'm wondering what the common faults are/ things too look out for thanks
  3. Wondering if anyone here has had any luck finding/sourcing background decals that look ok on maier side panels... specifically on 85/86 cr maier pieces... heres a pic of one of quite a few available but they say fit stock plastics... not sure how much trimming will be needed if I get these....
  4. Hi all, Where can one source an OEM or aftermarket flange?
  5. 😀! Just wondering which side of the frame the cable runs on 1988 cr500 and should it go in between the 2 head stay plates. Thanks all.
  6. Currently building a hill bike and i found a climbing arm for an '88, i assume the distance from cap to cap is the same but how about the linkage and rear wheel, if the axle will work i can also still use my current wheel. Any insight would be appreciated 👍
  7. Something might be up with my rear shock, especially since it seems to be rebounding extremely harshly and i cant seem to tell if there is a rebound adjust on it. I have toyed with the idea of interchanging it. While im at it, anyone ever tried a rear disc conversion on an early cr500? I am considering it but unsure if i would be ruining a classic for a small performance upgrade, or would it possibly make my bike more desirable?
  8. Today I picked up a Cr500 swapped banshee pretty cheap, the owner had it for a week and blew it up in the first week then sold it to me. I’m new to a beast like this and needed help figuring out everything and finding parts, it’s air cooled which I believe is only the 84s, so I’m attempting to try to find a new top end kit and maybe a bottom end if possible, also if anyone has any tips or pointers to look for that would be amazing https://photos.app.goo.gl/x1DC9ZnQQaew2zXU9 im searching for bottom end components or a full new bottom end or information on if anymore years can work with the 84 top end as I cannot find any rebuild kits for this year so if anyone has any info on that it would be super helpful
  9. Setting my CR500 up for desert riding/higher speed, and Im shopping for sprockets at the moment, any preferences for gearing? Im thinking of running 14/42, which should be somewhat close to 100 mph which sounds a little ridiculous to me...My motor is set up for hill climb which is also not ideal and why I am gearing it way higher. Cylinder head lowered .030, boyesen reeds, gnarly pipe and the MSV manifold to give yalls an idea of what kind of power im working with, aka basically its "stock" but just set up to be torquer.
  10. Hi guys Anyone have any pictures of the cr500 crankcase where the cylinder jug connects Thanks sean
  11. So ive gone through a lot of my 500's cooling system, like radiators, the whole pump housing, hoses and i am trying to flush all the blue antifreeze out of my bike. Problem is there is still junk in the system somewhere, my water keeps coming out a cloudly blue even though ive put at least a gallon of straight water through it... This is leading me to believe there may be calcium deposits in my water jacket, which bits of antifreeze are sticking to. What is a good way to properly wash away this garbage? I want to avoid caustics if possible but i understand that could be the only way.
  12. did a full restoration on my 500 it has a street title and crf forks+shock let me know what you guys think
  13. I finally got to take out the CR500 and open it up, and it seemed to run very good, even thought it was running a little rich. However i did notice it signed off a little early which ive been told is normal on this high compression motor. I've been wondering how i can add some more power up top+over rev, perhaps maybe using a newer cylinder head or different pipe? Or should i just sell my '85 and buy a newer one. I definitely like the crazy off idle hit and mid range power but would i be giving it up to create a meaner top end?
  14. A few years ago I purchased this 500 from dad. He made it Michigan street legal so, it is plated and titled. I just completed tearing down and replacing a bunch of parts on my 2001 XR650R and now I am ready to do the same thing to the 500. I am wondering what the newest year plastics I could put on it. I would love to match the colors of the 650. I plan on getting the natural IMS oversized tank, white polisport headlight and EE bark busters. I would really like to buy OEM plastics if they are available. Thanks
  15. So an 84 has come up for sale nere me. I don,t know much about them,I have an 88cr500 here. What should I know about this air cooled machine? And what is parts availibilty For the bike. Thanks for all the support.
  16. 3 years ago I woke up and got pissed that there wasn’t enough 2 stroke cc’s in my life. 491 Honda cc’s and $4000 later I thought my life made sense. Boy was I wrong. the bike would barely start. My friends that were riding behind me said the suspension was F*d up. The rear tire bounced around to the point that it was uncontrollable. I took the suspension to SRS (Ohio) and they completely resprung, rebuilt and revalved it. The rear shock was overfilled with nitrogen. Everything was totally screwed. Later, the spark was weak. I installed 2 new Ricky Stator coils in series(according to MSV) and the spark was greatly improved. after failing to get the bike to start I realized the best course of action was a compression test. 95 pounds later I realized I had to do go the ‘American’ route, which is spend a bunch of money and figure the rest out later. here is what the motor looked like before.
  17. I have an 85 cr500 i am having trouble selling, i am wondering how much i can get for an engine alone, and for those wondering why i would go as far to sell the engine out of a running, good bike, i am sort of tired of this bike since things just wont stop breaking on it. The right thing to do is to finish restoring it but i dont have the energy or money for that, i just want to ride.
  18. I am restomodding my 1986 Honda CR500. The existing Ohlins HO4490 rear shock is severely damaged and cannot be reused without a full rebuild and replacement of multiple main parts. My Question: Are there any new aftermarket shocks that will fit? Or, what other bikes have the same/similar shocks? Otherwise, does anybody have a main tube laying around for an Ohlins shock of this size?
  19. 😀Will the oring chains work on this bike ? or should i stick with the good old 520 chain? I,m concerned that the extra girth of an oring will cause faster wearing of all the plastic guides and sliders. Thanks all.
  20. Hey all, Just redid the top end on my 500, now a new problem! I also repainted the frame so maybe keep that in mind. After a gentle break-in and repeated torque of all the bolts I went for a spin. Bike is smooth no excess vibration for the bottom up to midrange RPM. WOT and high RPM I get a miss. Re-jetted the main both up and down with no change. I reduced the gap on the plug from .025 to .018 and this improved but didn't eliminate the miss. So I'm thinking got to be ignition! I rechecked all the connections and improved the ground for the coil. Test ride Monday afternoon. Any thoughts? Thanks
