This is actually a 1997, but I didn't see that option from the drop down menu. I found myself wanting a bike to do some longer distance riding, that would be less comfortable on a plated dirt bike. I used to own an XR650l, and wanted something similar, with a little more road focus. I've always wanted a DR650, so that was the obvious choice. I was looking for a 96+ due to the numerous improvements over the previous model years. Found this 97' locally in great shape and ended up buying it. It has just over 8k miles and looks like it has never been off road, even the graphics are in great condition. I have added a skid plate and bar risers, but other than than, dont plat on doing any mods. The bike has street oriented tires on it and will be my primary road focused bike.

I have so much more fun on the DR than my previous rides. It's a piece of cake to ride, nimble in traffic and while not the quickest off the line I can thrash it and not lose my licence. Plus I can go anywhere on it - what's not to like? Tonnes of grins :D

Original owner installed TM40, 40F0, and Cogent DDC and shock rebuild. Oh, and a Sargent seat. I could live on this thing. Can we go ride now?

I love it. Stock form it is pretty strong, haven't had it long but I know I'll enjoy it for years to come.

It's as dependable as an anvil and about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on.

Just got it and having some carb issues at 1/4 throttle. Took it to dealer and the cleaned out the carb but the issue remains. I Will be trying air fuel screw adjustment as pointed out in this forum. Waiting till Easter for the first off road and true test ride. So far seems to have good power after lean start off bog condition. I think I will love the bike once the carb is fixed.***Update*** You guys rock! I turned air/fuel screw out from 1 1/4 to 2 turns as suggested and now the bike moved up to a 4 from the 2 I had earlier. The only reason it is not a 5 star is it is too heavy. It is now a blast to ride!!! Thanks again, Sal

  20. Hi all, I'm going on this forum just in case there's a guru out there... 🙏 I have a 1992 Yam tenere xtz 660 3yf in the garage breaking and a Suzuki DR 650SE 1995 in Africa with a knackered spray or starter clutch bearing. I had replaced the bearing on the Yam before a long trip and it looks identical to the one for the Suzuki.....But is it??? Did the Japanese manufacturers use the same bearings? I'm over there next week and with the silly money that UK stock is, if I can transplant it will be a WIN! Who knows? For sure????
  21. So, my 2012 DR650 has been ridden daily, well maintained, and upgraded (fork emulators, aftermarket shocks, jet kit, new intake, new seat, protaper CR high bars, led lights, choke reroute, etc.) Usually runs like a top, starts first time every time with the choke out. This morning I go out to start her up, she cranks, but doesn't start. Kept trying with various choke positions, and adding a bit of throttle, it backfired twice, stopped after the second one. (sounded like a big bore gunshot). Started tearing her down, checking all the obvious places. Good battery at 12.6V, fuel going to carb, fuel coming out of carb, removed plugs, had some fouling, and wouldn't spark when grounded to frame, so I picked up new ones. Put in fresh plugs (NGK CR9E, couldn't find CR10E). Still no spark, started testing continuity from the plugs back; 10.5k ohms on the plug caps, 4.07k ohms on each end of the plug wires, wiring to from ignition coil to CDI wasn't an issue. Start doing some more research, test the harness coming from stator, that looked good. Tried the pickup/pulsar coil and got the result pictured. Does anyone know what the resistance should be? Looked everywhere but cant find a straight answer. Am I doing something wrong? Is this normal? Do I need a new pickup coil or stator/pickup coil combo? Could it be something else entirely? I can rebuild a BST 40 blindfolded, but suck at electrics ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Just got this running got a Clarke gas tank with Raptor petcock. Did the 520 conversion from ProCycle along with many other items as it was not running when I got it. Put in the Mikuni kit (came with float) replaced all fo the jets (has a Jet Kit) in it. Replaced the ground cable had corrosion under the sheathing put the counter shaft retaining seal in place. Need to put new tires on it next.
  23. Hey Everyone, New member here with a unique issue...Changed the oil on my 2004 DR650, realized there was a little too much, tried to use a spray bottle nozzle with a long straw to pump out a little of the oil, and a small piece of plastic on the end of the spray nozzle straw fell off into the engine through the oil cap. Question: Is this critical enough that I need to remove the clutch case cover, and everything that entails (new gasket, dealing with stripped bolts, potentially hurting the pinnion release shaft and having to replace it, etc.....or can I just leave it be and most likely it will be ground up over time and come out with the oil when I next change it, likely in the next 100 miles if I do nothing. I am very new to personal bike maintenance (clearly with this little stunt), but would really appreciate some advice on this. The peace of mind of getting it out would be great, but its proving to be quite the pain and build up of time, parts, shipping, etc all just to get this little piece out. Thanks for you advice and tips and good safe riding everyone!
