  1. Hi all! I've got an issue, one of many when it comes to bikes. I searched throughout all the pages I could find pertaining to my situation and couldn't find very much useful information. So the issue is, the bike has no electric start.... until it's hot enough to melt steel that is. It will bump start first time every time. But I can sit and crank the starter over for ever and it'll never start until the charger is bumped up past 200 amps. Not good. The story so far, Got the bike for 1k cash. Guy said it has no spark and no second gear. This particular guy also only ever rode newer crotch rockets. Brought it home pulled the choke, attached battery charger and she fired right up. Ran like absolute crap, but oh well I figure it's an older bike with only 10k miles so it probably needs a good carb cleaning. Took the carb apart and didn't know I messed something up until way later(didn't tighten down main jet). Oh well she runs well enough if I can get her started. Moved from California to Oklahoma. Eventually found the money to fix 2nd gear, and as I am a certified Honda small engine technician apprentice I figured it would be no big deal. Completely tore down engine to it's roots replaced 2nd, and 5th gear(because 5th gear connects to 2nd on the countershaft) dogs were worn pretty badly on both. The engine looked quite good compared to most others I've seen. Put the engine back together as per the service manual. Did all the right steps including loosening the banjo bolts to test for proper oil pressure. I even tore apart the electric starter to clean the contacts and the brushes and replace the dielectric grease. Adjusted the valves as per the service manual, replaced all gaskets, o-rings, seals, and oil filter. Finally after about a month of waiting on parts and reassembly I get to start her, only she doesn't. Electric start is still giving me the same issues I've always had. So I replaced the Ignition coil, CDI box, and put a new battery in, plus the starter motor rebuild. Nothing. Still cranks forever. I said what the heck and tried to push it slightly down hill and bump start it, and voila... fired right up! Once she gets hot enough and the stator charges the battery enough it'll electric start... sometimes. So I looked towards ignition, used a tool called ignition mate. Pretty awesome tool if you can afford it. Well while cranking the ignition mate reads the spark plug is getting 1-4kw of "spark" every cycle, well it only fires after getting up past 5kw sometimes 6-8kw. And sometimes the ignition would be intermittent as in it wouldn't give any spark at all. I cycle the ignition and it seems to soft reset the bike as it will usually give it back spark. I tested this with the new and old CDI box, the old one would never spark. Ever. So I threw it in the trash. A month later I stil l can't figure it out. Is there something I'm missing? TL;DR Bike won't start using electric start only bump start before and after engine rebuild Electric start works after pushing the starter past about 200 cold cranking amps or when hot.
  2. Hello all, I have a 2006 TTR-125. The previous owner did not have a battery installed, so I bought one and installed it. (I bought a good one, Energizer, and the voltage and everything met factory specs) The bike started right up with the button and everything. The battery powered the bike for about two days of riding, with a light hooked up too. Now the battery is dead. I turn my bike off every time I am not riding it. Now, after riding it for about 6 hours fairly hard, the battery still has no charge. (It has enough charge to power the light, maybe for now, but not to turn the bike over) Why is the motor not charging the battery? What are some of the most common things I should check first? I should note that I know a decent amount about how to maintain, work on, and fix bikes, but when it comes to electrical stuff I have no clue. So it could be a very easy fix, like a wire not hooked up, or something to do with the ground wire. I am really lost when it comes to this stuff. Thanks in advance for all your help!
  3. So my TTR 125 has electric start and the stator has seen better days, no start and it didn’t electric start for awhile before. So I got to buy a new one, the ones for this model and the electric start ones are few and high priced imo. Here’s the parts number and exploded diagram for it. https://www.cheapcycleparts.com/oemparts/a/yam/50045bbaf8700209bc7941d8/generator The TTR 90 with electric start appears to be the same part, and the model numbers are one digit off, the third one. And appear the same, I can get a used one for a low price on eBay. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F174124574180 Has anyone dealt with anything like this? Thanks in advance.
  4. When I turn my key to on nothing happens, no lights, no speedometer, and wont start. I tested the battery today, tested full. I'm not too electrically inclined so I dont know where to check. The bike will bumpstart, but dash just flickers on and off.

  7. This is a big news for the motorcycle industry, Alta Motors, and of course dirt bikes! Just like Mercedes recognized Tesla as the car battery technology leader by buying a stake in the company and its batteries, Harley Davidson just bought a stake in Alta Motors. https://www.investors.com/news/harley-davidson-takes-alta-motors-stake-plans-electric-motorcycle NEWS It's Electric: Harley-Davidson Takes Alta Motors Stake, Plans Electric Motorcycle ELAINE LOW 11:20 AM ET Harley-Davidson (HOG) is investing in lightweight electric vehicle maker Alta Motors, announcing Thursday that it plans to work with the company to create new products and develop electric motorcycle technology. The news comes not long after Harley-Davidson said it sees motorcycle shipments declining in 2018. Shares of the iconic motorcycle brand edged up 0.1% in the stock market today. Prior to the team-up, the legacy bike maker was already working on such technology. It intends to debut its first motorcycle EV, part of "Project LiveWire," next year. "Earlier this year, as part of our 10-year strategy, we reiterated our commitment to build the next generation of Harley-Davidson riders, in part, by aggressively investing in electric vehicle (EV) technology," Harley-Davidson CEO Matt Levatich said in a press release. He said that Alta's objectives "align closely" with Harley's. Track Top Stocks And Market Trends With Free IBD Newsletters The foray into the electric vehicle market could open the door to new riders not typically lured in by Harley-Davidson's roaring motorcycles. The company hopes to "attract new audiences who are inspired by motorcycles and drawn to the 'twist-and-go' ease and exhilaration of an electric motorcycle with no gears or clutch." Alta's 259-pound Redshift MXR, for example, has 50 horsepower and "requires no air filters, oil changes, or top end rebuilds," according to the company. Shares of Indian motorcycle parent Polaris (PII), which sells electric bicycles, fell 0.5%. Polaris predicts a sharp slowdown in sales growth for the year.
  8. Hi, I am having issues with my display panel not displaying. I looped a couple weeks ago and since then it won't display. My fuel pump makes noise as usual when I turn the key in, but my ignition doesn't start anymore. I removed my tail light because it got destroyed, at the moment there is no tail light. I heard I should check the fuses if they still work, but I doubt it since it didn't get hit at all and I didn't mess with wires yet. When I got my bike back up after falling, I started the bike, everything worked. I shut it down, looked at the damage and then the display shut off. My front turn signals do work, headlight won't turn on because I cannot turn the bike on. I would like any hints on where and what to look for because I have no clue other than fuses and common ground. By the way, I am not to familiar with electrical terms so please forgive me for any lack of knowledge. Thank you.
  9. I have a 1990 yz 250 that just stopped running. Can bump start and get a few revs, then dies. Cleaned carb, checked gas and spark. Can’t tell if perhaps spark is weak? Would like to check electrics but not clear on procedure or resistance readings for the model bike. Can anyone help me out? Thanks.
  10. Hi there, A few rides ago my 2019 430 RR Race Edition began to run strange after riding for 1 hour plus and then restarting. It would stutter cracking the throttle just above idle. And run like it was cold. It cracked and popped like it was lean. After running +10 min it would be fine again, but if I killed the engine it would begin again. Also during this time, the bike would die when idling at warmup, usually I would just restart it 2-3 times and no issues once it was warm. Seemed to take forever to run right. The problem has gotten worse, and now the bike wont run for more than a few minutes. Sometimes i can rev the hell out of it and it will run, but it wont idle for long. This problem did kinda coincide with me switching from my desert tank to the stock tank. Not certain how to check the fuel filter, pump, TPS, injector, etc. But am looking for advice!!! Thanks in advance. Have all electrical test gear needed.
  11. I recently purchased a 2000 Drz400 (kickstart only) and have been converting it to make it street legal. I am running the tusk enduro lighting kit off the battery it comes with, as well as the trailtech vapor on the battery it comes with. I am wondering if I wire a 60w lightbar for the high beam, will that be drawing too much power? It wont be running all the time, but also wont go unused. Also, the bike bogs when given WOT at idle. I am almost positive it is running way too rich, because the bike wont start with the choke out, and when the throttle is bliped wide open a little gas will drop out of the overflow hose. The fuel mixture screw doesnt seem to help. I am not a mechanic, so if anyone has any answers to these questions, could you put them in dummy form. Thank y'all.
