    Cafe Racer project
  5. Hello all, I am planning on purchasing one of my grandpas old bikes from my grandma. the bike in question is a 1982 Honda ft500 with 1291 original miles (my grandpa bought it new) it is missing the carb and a few of the side shields and the air filter box cover. It also may be locked up or just in gear as the rear wheel doesn’t turn but I haven’t tried to shift it at all. No one in the family knows the last time it was ridden and the carb has been off the engine for at least 5 years, leaving the cylinder open. But the bike has been in indoor storage For at least the last 10 years and it does look pretty damn clean. I would like to give my grandma a fair price for it I was thinking somewhere in the 300-500 range as it sits as I see good running ones sell for a little more then 1000. Do you guys think that is a fair deal? Also I would like a kick start on the bike as after some research I hear the electric start gives problems and I was wondering can I just swap a 79-81 Honda xr500 motor into the ft500 frame? Or should I just use the right side crankcase cover and the kickstart parts from a 79-81 xr and leave the ft engine in the ft? Also has anyone personally added a kickstart to their ft? Thank you for your help

Stiffer springs & shocks, richer jets,1 tooth larger engine sprocket, low bars. Slow but great handling fun ride.

I like my Ascot but I have no delusions. I know what it is, a cheap, fun, light weight ride that is at home on back country roads. Don't expect to keep up with the sport bike crowd because it won't. It swings into corner effortlessly and powers out of corners with authority. It is right at home on my dirt road and that's part of it charm. It's a good fun little bike.

Nice bike, I had to up the gearing a bit to get it to be a real highway bike. Lots of fun to ride, very light, nice sound, easy to work on. Fairly rare nowadays....

This is my first motorcycle (Rita) and I really had no clue what I was getting myself into (something great). Aside from the fluids being black and needing replacing, I have changed the air filter, oil filter, and grips. The chain needs to be replaced soon, as do the tires but for now I'm riding with the rubber side down. She leaks a little oil.. I'm no mechanic but it doesn't seem very serious. I rode it from east Hollywood to my parent's in San Luis Obispo and back and it didn't let me down. Now that I'm sure I'm keeping the bike, I'm giving it the love it deserves. One more old bike on the road. When I turned up with it at my folks house, the first thing my mom said was, "Grand dad rode an Indian..." - she took it better than expected
