So far it has been a great first bike for my son. He was able to get the hang of it quickly and very soon will be ready for the next step up. I will post more on it as we continue to improve upon it as well as add photos.

  11. Just did a top end rebuild on my 02' Yamaha PW80 today (which has a two stroke air cooled engine) and the simplicity just amazed me. Four, and I repeat, FOUR 10mm nuts to unscrew, and bam! The cylinder head and cylinder slide right off and the piston is exposed. Took me a total of 25 minutes to do the whole job. Got it all back together and it ran awesome. So, it got me thinking, how many of you would enjoy a lineup of air cooled two stroke bikes in modern, lightweight frames with great suspension? They would be the perfect bike for casual riders, for riders on a budget, or for people that just like to have fun on bikes and not worry about boiling over, valve adjustments, etc. etc. Honda made CR's that were air cooled, I believe they were 125, 250, and 480, and I'm sure they weren't slow by any means. It would be cool to see somebody shove a CR480 motor in one of Honda's updated chassis. What do you guys think?
  12. Hi guys, My son hit a tree and broke the shifter lever off on his 2002 pw80. I pulled the right side cover, removed clutch pack, pulled out shift shaft and replaced. Put all back together and bike runs in neutral, but once u pop it into 1st, it lunges forward and dies. If I give it a little rolling start (while running in neutral) I can shift into first and start riding. I can then go through all 3 gears. No problem. But once u come to a stop (in 1st gear) it stops hard and dies. DID I MISS SOMETHING? I'm nearly Positive I put it back together properly. Not that complicated. Seems to me that "something" isn't disengaging properly. That being said, it sounds a little funny when in 3rd I should be able to put it in 1st and have it still run and ready for throttle. and thoughts, tips Advice appreciated. Thanks!!

Great purchase! Bought it from a family that owns a motorcycle shop. Had the carb cleaned before purchase. Was hoping to spend 600-750 on a PW80 and spent 850 on this one but I really like the owners and their business. Will be buying more bikes from them in the future!

Good 2nd bike for my oldest son, 10 Yrs old, 4'0", 60 lbs. Easy to maintain and work on. I'd recommend for the young rider whom is short.

Amazing bike! Still have it and it is 8 years old! Rides like a 4 Stroke even though its a 2 stroke. You can feel the powerband a little. Pretty fast if you take the restrictions off. literally not a single problem with it still. Runs great and starts right up. Will never sell this awesome bike.

    PW80 Barn Find

My son and I are newbies to bikes, so we are probably going to ask some silly questions, so apologies in advance. Our kind neighbor has just given my son a 1999 PW80 that has been left outside next to a shed for quite a while. Our plan is to get going, then tackle the cosmetics. Our first concern is the engine may be seized. The bike does not have a carby fitted so I guess that could have caused some exposure to the element. We live in Sydney Australia, so our climate is very dry, the bike has a little bit of surface rust in parts, but nothing much. Anyway we took the spark plug out and sprayed in some WD-40 lubricant, let it sit for a while and put the bike in third and tried to wheel it forward, the wheel remained locked, we tried all gears, in neutral it rolls freely. We then tried to push down the kick start, no luck. What do you recon? Should we start pulling it apart? And the carby, do we try buy an original, or are the after market ones okay? Thanks very much.
