  1. Hello I am new to TT so hopefully im posting in the right spot. I have starter problems on my yz250fx. last couple months I had notice that the electric starter has taken more cranks then normal to get started, I thought the valves could be out of spec and that is the problem, yesterday I put a new piston in the bike and checked the valves everything was good, and I took the bike out to break it in the electric start struggled to start the bike all day but manage to do so after holding it down for a bit, now today I could get it to fire at all using the electric start. Note. The bike fires first or second kick with the kickstart and runs great, wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what they did to fix it. Thanks for reading ,John
  2. When I turn my key to on nothing happens, no lights, no speedometer, and wont start. I tested the battery today, tested full. I'm not too electrically inclined so I dont know where to check. The bike will bumpstart, but dash just flickers on and off.
  3. Hi, my 400ex when i go to start it the starter just kind of spins and doesnt engage. I mean ever once in a while it will kinda catch but it isnt working right and i dont know how to fix it
  4. Greetings, I have broken 3 of these shafts on my 2003 YZ450F. I am wondering if there is a combination of parts i can buy to convert it into a newer shaft or if a newer shaft will fit? I know I know, i shouldn't start the bike with the throttle open, but its force of habit as being an old school two stroke guy. I purchased a complete assembly off a 2006 and it will not fit in my case, it is 20mm thick not 16mm thick like the 2003 shaft. Also if anyone is selling some parts, i am interested. Any help is much appreciated.
  5. I replaced a broken starter , it cracked the housing below the gear head where it inserts into the motor, after replaced one was in it started right up but on the 8th time of starting this atv up, it beoke again , any ideas of why
  6. So I just got a 1996 yamah 250 and I need a new starter for it. But I can’t find one any help? It’s a 9 tooth starte but I can’t find any with the same back end. I found one for a 2005-2012. Would it work?
  7. I've got a 2005 450X that I have been having some starter issues with. The problem started with the e start going out, so I replaced the starter motor and got a brand new oem yuasa battery (yes I got the correct kind)... it helped but the starter would hesitate and then crank over up to speed after it overcame the hesitation. After researching this I decided to replace the starter clutch. After putting it all together with a brand new starter clutch assembly, the kickstarter is turning the starter motor. I assume it is not because of the clutch because I just replaced it. Let me know if you have had this issue or know what it might be. Thanks.

  9. Hello everyone glad to join the community after lurking for about a year... Now to the issue ! I have done a bottom end rebuild on my x and the bike now has 6 hours running amazing starting only by kick. Before my rebuild my starter was in working condition.. Since it was my first rebuild I accidentally disassembled my starter and put the brushes back in and to my surprise didn’t work.. yada yada fast forward I have just installed a new starter and before I put it in I connected the wire and set it on my peg and pressed the button and the starter turned and also sparked scaring the sh*t out of me LOL. So I’ve come here for guidance. And I have a few questions. Did I burn out my starter by doing that? A few symptoms: with starter fully installed I held my hand on it and press the button and it feels like it turns the smallest amount. Also after holding the start for a few seconds my starter gets really hot followed by my battery heating up as well. I also swapped batteries with no difference. Any ideas? Bad RR? Bad stator? New relay? I’m going nuts without the e start. Please send help Thanks Also pic included of my sweet sumo
  10. I have a 2014 KTM xc-f 450. I replaced my starter motor last Friday morning because the bearings in were shot. That day we rode all day. I noticed my bike heating excessively. I turned it off, tried to start it again, but it wouldnt start. I waited for 2nminutes then started no probelm. This happened a few more times that day, the next morning i woke up and atarted it no problem. I rode and noticed it heated up again so i stopped. Same thing, it wouldnt start till it cooled down. I shoukd have gone back. It happened again. This time it cranked and cranked but didnt start. Then suddenly it wouldnt. It wouldnt start. I tried restarting my battery(i have a restart battery) but nothing. I ended up pushing it 1.5 miles through sand and came home. I noticed all my coolant was gone and was full of oil. Now i have tried starting, but all i get is a solenoid click. Im goong to west virginia from FL on wednesday for my highschool grad trip. I would really appreciate your help thanks. Maybe the stator, idk. Btw im not very motor saavy.
  11. New guy here, I have a 28,000km 2005 DRZ400SM with the 3x3 mod and Athena Big Bore kit that ran for a couple months and started every time. While riding the engine stopped and wouldn't start again. Mechanic took it apart and found the stator was burned to hell because flywheel bolts were loose (loctite could have prevented this from previous owner or factory). So we replaced the stator but still wouldn't start. While trying to fix the no-start issue we cleaned the valves, replaced piston, replaced regulator, cleaned the carb, installed JD Jet Kit and still no start. The battery is running at 13v and lights, horn and blinkers all work and its trying to crank but will not start... So I took it into another mechanic and they said the starter is running in reverse. I asked them if the polarity was backwards and they still don't know why it's doing that. This is preventing a spark from the plug (which was working fine before the stator issue). Any ideas from the forums would be super helpful... I've put 1k+ into parts and service so far and I'm kind of done... Thanks guys,
  12. Ok, guys, I have tried everything to figure out why my 2012 ktm 250 sx-f won't start with the E-Start. Most of the time the bike kicks on the first or second kick but the bike will never fire up with the E-Start. The electric motor still kicks over and sounds pretty strong but the bike will not fire. I know E-Start and the mechanical components are moving the position because I can feel the air move out of the exhausted pipe. Now I have replaced a lot of parts and done a lot of tests. Somethings I have no idea why I did them, but I will list off the things: Replaced the fuel pump. Replaced the solenoid (Resistance was 4 K-ohms above spec). I actually was having some idle issues and this may have solved them. I just replaced this 9/23/19 and it appeared the bike was idling much better. Replaced spark plug a few times. Cleaned the fuel injector and changed fuel screen multiple times. The battery appears to be strong. Typically over 12.5 volts. I took out the torque limiter and it was not damaged. Stator resistance was in spec. Checked the valves and they were in spec. Lowered the TPS setting because it was high for my Colorado altitude. I have not done a starter electrical test because I can't find any specs in the repair manual. Some threads say there is a specific resistance but they all seem to vary. Long story short, I have tried a lot and can’t seem to solve this problem. I’m about ready to buy a new starter motor but after all the money I have spent I just don’t know if that’s worth it. I also just bought this bike about 8 months ago and really have not ridden it very hard. Any advice is much appreciated!
  13. Hey there. As the title suggests my 2013 drz400sm is having intermittent starting problems. When I go to start it sometimes the push start will give no response whatsoever for 1-30 pushes and then suddenly will crank as normal. Other times it will crank first push. This problem developed over a few days and is now at the point I am not confident it will start if I take it anywhere. Have not tried it but fairly sure a bump start would work fine. When it isn't working the dash doesn't even dim and the headlight doesn't flash as normal. I am a novice mechanic but have done a fair amount of maintenance and would rather work through the problem myself if possible. My speculation is a problem with the wiring from the button to the starter or the starter itself but I'm at somewhat of a loss how to approach a fix here. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Preferably in simple terms for the sake of my inexperience.
  14. I have a tx300 that I use yr round and as a snowbike in winter. You can’t bump start a snowbike easily at all. I removed my kick starter for summer to save 1.5 lbs and am thinking about putting it back on for winter. The odd time my starter will spin and not engage. Are there any maintenance you can do on them to lube them so they last longer. I know you had to do this w the older starters but I’m told these ones are a pita to remove, so servicing these ones will be a pita. Thanks for the help
  15. Hi Everyone, I know some of us have badass wives and bike size doesn't matter that much. My wife is working on it. Long story short, KTM 250 xc-f vs Honda 250f (the trail bike not the mx). This would be her first bike. I put her on a quad for 1 day and she wanted to try a dirtbike. Used my buddies crf 110 pit bike for a day and she wanted something larger/ faster after an hour. She is 28 and 5'7" 150lbs. She is a pretty good mountain biker. She is able to ride blues and easier blacks at bike parks and walk the big drops. Both wheels on the ground at all times however. I am all out of bikes to barrow and its time for her own rig. KTM 250 xc-f vs CRF250F. I know the bikes are way different. I could be naive, but my 2019 350 excf does not hit that hard, so I thought MAYBE I could buy once cry once with a KTM xc-f. Dont want to get her a street legal bike. On both bikes Id run: 1-Seat Concepts low seat 2-Rekluse clutch 3-1inch lowering kit from KTM factory for KTM KTM is lighter and better suspended . CRF250F is cheaper and designed to be easy to handle I'm sure. We would mostly ride double track jeep roads. Unless she suprises me and wants to try some mellow single track. Thoughts ? P.S She has not tried my 350. I have the stock clutch and I don't want her to be overwhelmed by stalling and hate riding dirt bikes.
