  1. Howdy, TT CRF gurus! I'm soliciting your advice on immediate maintenance actions I should consider for my new toy. Background: After hitting the half-century mark this summer, my mid-life crisis drove me to explore trying motocross again after being out of it for 25 years. (I sold the CR500 and played around on XRs for a few years thereafter.) It didn't help that I visited a nearby track last weekend and found out they have a 50+ class that runs with the 40+ class. Those guys sure looked like they were having a good time and I ended up talking to couple of them after the last moto and they got me excited. Past week I've been searching TT on bike recommendations which led me to search for a 05-08 CRF450r. I scoured through craigslist in multiple cities and found a low-hour 2008 that appears to still have the original tires, chain, and sprockets at a dealership. The frame and side covers had minimum boot wear, and the only issue was a scrunched exhaust from being looped out (should be an easy fix). I rode it up and down the street a few times and the motor and throttle response felt solid. Only thing I noticed was the idle seemed a tad high. Owners and Maintenance manuals are on order, picked up a couple of quarts of the recommended engine and tranny oils along with a new filter. My plan to put around the farm then next few weeks getting a feel for it and set the suspension up for my 170 lbs butt. Then I'll visit the track in a couple of weeks for a practice session and maybe a day or two later sign up for the last race of the season. This winter I'll conduct a more intensive inspection and ponder mods and accessories suitable for old man racing next year. I've been searching the TT forums for the past few hours and have some good ideas, but figured I'd start a thread to make sure I don't overlook something. thanks for any advice you can provide.

It has nerf bars, ITP Holeshot HD tires, stage 2 hot cams, dyno jet kit, high compression piston, Dasa racing exhaust, blingstar cross front bumper, protaper handlebar, and full skid plate. I use it for trail riding. It is no joke at all. It's not a drag bike but it pops wheelies if you give it more than ¾ throttle. I have beat raptor's, yfz450r's, an rm250, a trx700xx, a trx300ex, and a small side by side. The only competition it has are bikes modded equally to it. No I will not drag race your "Drag Banshee", thats idiotic. I dont usually race people, unless they ask me first. It has a top speed of 90mph and gets there quick. It looks fairly stock, but preformance wise, is very much aftermarket. This bike has never failed me. It doesn't have any problems, and never had.

Awesome quad, fast, great suspension. I just can't bring myself to sell this thing even though I haven't started it in a few years.

Starter clutch sucks on this bike.

found this NOT-running 05 trx450r for sale on Craigslist went and took a look at it and got the price from $1,500 to $800 in the matter of 20 minutes. Made excellent compression and was told it needed a valve-adjustment, carb cleaning, and spark plug. I never even pulled it apart due to having no work space or tools... so I traded it for a mint 05 crf450r which was for sale for $2,200 firm. Guy got the quad running great about a week later

Decent quad, would never own one again though. great reliability, and very smooth powerband with a long gear ratio, although this is one of the worst years to own this quad.

  15. Hey guys. Parked the 450r and bought a ktm 2 stroke Noticed the other day that the bolt for the rear shocks upper mount rattled out It's a m10 and its 52mm long. I called 5 dealerships and NONE of them have this very common, $3 bolt I need one bad. By tomorrow I am wondering what bolt on the 450 I can steal/borrow for a day. Kind of having a brain fart As to if I have a long m10 bolt anywhere on the bike? There's short ones for the sub frame. Maybe I can steal it from the Hondas rear shock? I know the Honda bolts aren't quite as good quality as the ktms bolts. But it's better than nothing 😛

  21. I just started working on a trx450r I believe it is a 2005. It has the older carb as well. It sat for a while so I went in a rebuilt the carb and went to check the valves. The exhaust valves were alright but the intake had no clearance and had a 120 shim in it so there is no adjustment. So then I threw it together and went to take it around the block. Runs great when cold but as it gets hot it has a bog like reaction if I go past 1/4 throttle no matter what. But it runs great when cold. I’ve been told this is valve float and is actually common on these. Just want to make sure before I go out and spend 500 to get new valves and seats. Either way though I’ll have to get a head job done :(
