Hi all, I've been lurking on here for about a year now and figured it was time to start posting. I'm unexcited with the lukewarm options on the market, so I'm beginning a quest for the perfect dual sport bike. This will be a quest for all of us, documenting all parts, prices, and techniques. The goal is simple: create the dual sport bike the people have been demanding for the last decade through reasonable modifications. Here are the goals: Required goal (stretch goal) Cost < $10,000 including bike and all mods Wet weight < 300 lb (< 280 lb) including all fluids and full gas tank Range: 200+ mi, can include external tank(s) Oil Change Interval > 2,000 mi Valve Check Interval > 5,000 mi Electric Start (w/ backup kick) Power: 30+ hp (35+ hp) @ 5,000 ft elev Transmission: Wide ratio 6-speed Top Speed: 90+ mph (100+ mph) Fuel Economny: 60+ MPG (50+ MPG) Suspension: 8+ inch travel F/R Ground Clearance: 8+ inch (10+ inch) Wheels: 19" F / 18" R Tires: 50/50 or 60/40 Dual-sport Brakes: Dual disc Gauges: Tach + Speedo Lights: Dark forest compatible Luggage: Soft-pack capable Survival + repair kit (Removable windshield) Appearance: Damn good All of the technical notes, prices, links, etc are on this Google Drive. This idea started with a Reddit post that can be found here. After months of consideration, today I picked up a 2015 WR250R with about 200mi on the odometer. I think it's the best starting platform at the moment due to its light weight, wide ratio 6-speed, and fuel injection (turbo more feasible). The short-term plan is: Shave some weight off with upgraded battery, light housing, etc Replace the front wheel with a 19" rim Put on some 50/50 tires (I'm thinking Mitas E-07s) Lower seat height through front wheel, suspension, and lowering link Change current gearing from 13/49 to maybe 13/45? Long-term: Add a turbocharger to get us well over that 35+ hp 😉 Strip the bike down to the frame for a total overhaul in appearance; I'm thinking retro scrambler vibes without losing functionality Would love any input, questions, comments, blatant disrespect, suggestions...all the usual. I'll keep posting here as progress is made!
