  1. My brother in laws bike after sitting in storage suddenly wouldn’t start for him. He could get it started but it would die then not start again. Eventually just couldn’t get it started. He’s done some stuff to it like rebuild carb and check some stuff. He was feeling defeated so I said I’d take a look at it. Here’s what I found. 1-tried kicking it over, seemed easy, could push kickstart lever thru with my hand easily, but decompression lever pulled in still made it even easier to move by hand 2-took sight plugs out to double check decompression lever to make sure it wasn’t hung up, oil came out crankcase sight plug and I believe this chunk of metal came out with it. (See attached pic) 3-checked valve clearances. Outside intake is right on the tight side of spec .102mm(friction fit I’d say) spec is .10mm. Outside exhaust is .254mm spec is .22mm. 4-now without oil and or a spark plug in it it feels like TDC has more compression than before?? That blew my mind. I’m wondering maybe whatever this chunk is was holding a valve open? I don’t know. I’m going to set the valve clearances in the middle of spec and double check the carb settings and make sure it’s clean. Any ideas on what the metal chunk may be from(it’s a half moon with roughly 10mm hole in it and flat on one side)?
  2. So... Rode three motos today (practice). Bike ran perfect the entire time. Zero signs of any issue. Went to ride a fourth moto and bike won't fire. Engine turns over like normal but does not even try to start. 2018 fc250. Stock engine and electronics. No blink codes. Fuel and air filter is fine. Tried a different ECU. No change. Nothing frayed or unplugged. Fuel pump sounds as if it's priming as normal. I recently had the sub frame off to remove the shock but no wiring was detached and everything seems fine. Any thoughts on tests to run?
  3. So I bought a used 2006 rmz 450 a while back. Started up great when i got it, always starts easy when its cold. The only issues I've had is after riding for a while, and the bike is hot, its a beast to start. I was out riding a few months ago, killed it and couldnt get it to start at all after. Not even with a bump starting it. I took the carb off cleaned it out put it back together and it still wont start. Im.getting spark fuel and air but it still won't pop off. Im lost..
  4. Last night I purchased a 1987 Honda XL250R for my son. It appeared to be in decent shape for the year. When I got there to look at the bike he already had it running, he showed me that it ran, went thru the different functions ETC. We shut the bike off for a few minutes, discussed just a bunch of different type of things, and I re-started the bike before I loaded it up and left. It was about an hour ride home, and the bike cooled off in that time and now I can not get it to fire at all...… will not even attempt to fire over...… just kick and kick and nothing: when I pulled the spark plug it was dry, a little black, but not all that terrible. I have: * changed the spark plug * left the plug on top of the engine kicked it over and do see a strong spark * used the choke to try starting it * sprayed either in the cylinder * let it sit for a hour and came back to it ( assuming it was flooded) * Let it sit over night and tried to start it (assuming its flooded) * Calle the previous owner about a starting procedure, and he insists he just got on it and kicked it a few time and it started. Nothing will get it to even cough much less attempt to start. ANY HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!! I live in the Western New York area..... specifically Eden NY about 20 minutes south of Buffalo Here is a link to the post I started in the General Portion of the forum
  5. Hello all, I recently bought a 2004 rm85, the guy had it built for his son who rode it around a camp ground mostly and couldnt really open it up, he usually ran 40:1 in it, however we put 32:1 in it after the first tank, the bike is low hours on a factory top end. However, today I was riding and went to shift from 1st to 2nd and it felt like it hit a false neutral, so I downshifted then tried again it did it again, so I tried again, this time it went from 1st to 5th with no issues, however once I went around a turn the bike bogged then shut off in the span of around 2 seconds, the clutch feels frozen and when in gear the rear wheel wont move even an inch anybody know what the issue could be? Thank you in advance for reading
  6. I bought a used 2004 DRZ-400S on Craigslist a couple days ago, it has a Procircut T4 exhaust, an off/reserve/on fuel switch, and now I am having issues; Motorcycle ran and started up fine when I got it, except it would lose power if you pulled on the gas too quickly. I figured this would probably be a carburetor issue going off the advice of fourms, but now I am running into a nightmare. I will walk you through on how I opened up this can of worms. I pulled the carburetor out, having had no experience in cleaning carburetors except watching a couple of YouTube videos. Unfortunately one of the YouTube videos instructed me to fully disassemble the entire carburetor, and without knowing I unscrewed the fuel mixture screw and do not know the setting it was supposed to be at. I screwed it back in roughly 8-12 turns. Once the carb was reassembled, I put it back on the engine and reconnected the fuel line. I turned on the fuel and let it sit for a while, and when I came back to the bike gasoline was all over the place and dripping out of the airbox (which I now believe is because I was stupid and plugged the vent hole on the carb, but I'm not sure). I unplugged the vent hole and the leak seemed to stop, and so I turned off the fuel and went to sleep. This morning I tried to start her up, and it is not even attempting to start, just the cranking of the starter, no combustion or pops. I tried it with the battery charged, kickstand up, the clutch in, choke at half, choke at full, double checked that the fuel was in the "on" position...Nothing.(I do smell gas fumes coming from the exhaust). I spent all day taking the carb back out, checking the float, cleaning the jets, making sure everything that I took apart is correct, and this time I only put the fuel adjustment screw in 3.5 turns (per a post on this fourm). This time it makes a familiar turning over sound for the first cycle (very brief sound as if it running), however after that it goes back to the same old plain crank, nothing. I saw another youtube video where the bike had the same dead sound as mine (the link will be at the bottom of this post) and replacing the spark plug fixed their issue apparently. I spent another hour going out to autozone to get a new spark plug and the tool extensions needed (this DRZ seems to be a %*@&# to take apart!). I pulled the plug out and its fine, plenty good spark(Spark plug reading looks roughly good-slightly lean reading from a spark plug chart). Just to be safe I put the new plug in (NGK CR8E), and crank the bike again- it makes the initial idle sound again but only for the first cycle like last time, after that its completely dead and wont make any sounds besides the starter turning unless its been sitting for a while. I have no idea what to do at this point. Could that initial combustion mean that its constantly flooded or that I need to keep adjusting the fuel screw(if this is likely the problem please include steps to adjust fuel mixture, but if the spark plug is working it should just be running poorly instead of not at all, right)? I have heard that this could also signify loss of compression, but surely not after all it ran fine just two days ago. I really want this bike to be running soon because it was fun while I was on it, I just needed to refine it a bit. Thank you for any help that you have to offer. Heres the video of what my bike sounds like when I'm talking about it being "dead":
  7. Hi, I have a 2010 crf 450r and last year had a hole in the case so I sent it in due to not having the proper tools. I got the motor back and all hooked up. It started right up prolly on the 10th kick or so and all was well. Then it died and has done this several times but now I can’t get it to start at all and if I get lucky and it does start it runs for a matter of seconds with very low idle. It’s got a new coil, plug fuel pump and screen. Any help is appreciated

  9. Hey there, New to the group and to riding! I posted this on another group, but didn't get much help. So, I'm going for the 2nd HAIL MARY to see if you all can help me this narrow this down because this bike still isn't running!!! Forgive the length of the post, but I wanted to try and make sure I laid everything out as to the current situation! What it's doing now: It will turn over 3-4 cranks sometimes when I give it gas but it won't keep running, only a couple seconds. If I don't give it gas, it will just sputter every 3-4 cranks. I get tons of kick back every 3-4 kicks. Whats been done: Written on the picture along with pics of the Cams and Piston at TDC. I bought both the GYTR Tuner and set the bike to factory settings (Which I'm pretty sure thats what it was on). FI diagnostic tool to test everything its capable of (everything fell within spec) tested the spark and it wasn't sparking every crank, but did the diagnostic and had a steady spark so that ruled out the stator and the magneto. - Should it spark with every kick? If so, what would prevent it from doing that? Could it still be the stator, magneto, or coils (I don't even know if it has coils)? Tested the entire electrical circuit and everything fell within spec. It has compression (130 was the reading), Didn't conduct a leak down test (just got thr kit in the mail yesterday) brand new air filter, New iridium spark plug (CR7EIX) I know OEM is CR8 but the guy who built and sold me the bike told me he ran the cr7. fuel is 116 Octane / 93 mixed, used a fuel cleaner, New fuel injector, New fuel pump, adjusted the intake/exhaust cam shaft and ensured the valves were within specs (either OEM or Hot Cams) and they fell within those numbers (Cams and Piston at TDC) bottomed out the idle/primer (did that many, many times) knob and kicked it, kicked it, and kicked it plenty of times after that every couple of clicks until it bottomed out in the other direction So between myself and this guy my buddy introduced me too, who has never worked on a bike like this (but has been working on dirtbikes and motorcycles for 50 years). who was very impressed with how these bikes are built. This is what we have narrowed it down too. What we have narrowed it down to: ECU (ordered) Throttle Position Sensor (Installed Today) Fuel pressure sensor (Installed today) Regulator/rectifier (entire circuit cannot be completely tested because of the way it's built, but what we could test was within spec) Air Intake pressure sensor (installed today) If anyone has any other ideas PLEASE send it this way! Thank you in advance
  10. When I turn my key to on nothing happens, no lights, no speedometer, and wont start. I tested the battery today, tested full. I'm not too electrically inclined so I dont know where to check. The bike will bumpstart, but dash just flickers on and off.
  11. I have a 2005 Honda crf100f that will not start. It is very hard to kick & when it does kick the area around the front sprocket & flywheel start smoking. Any ideas on what the problem is & what could fix it?
  12. I have a 2003 cr 85 it will not start. I’ve just replaced both crank seals. Air filter. Cleaned carb. Replaced plug. Repacked silencer. Rebuilt top end. And still will not start unless bump started. Once warm it will stall when your off the throttle. Could my stator be bad to the point it doesn’t give enough spark to get it running? Or is this a fuel issue? Thanks in advance
  13. I have been having one hell of a time chasing down my starting problem. When it starts and runs it does good, but after running for awhile, like during races it won’t fire back up for awhile, either having to choke it or hold the throttle till it fires up. I have replaced the stock battery to a firepower lithium battery, new spark plug, new fuel tank (shouldn’t change anything), new starter clutch, clean air filter as always, oil level is good, coolant is good, valves adjusted 20hrs ago, all connections are good, boots & seals are good, I only have 60 hrs on it currentlyI have searched around and have found nothing on it. I am going to change the coil next hoping it might do something, otherwise it will go back to the shop. hoping someone on here may have some advice in running this down. I’m stumped.
  14. Just wondering if anyone can help me.figure out these electrical issues I'm having with my 2016 KTM 350sxf. The bike was working fine until I washed it twice in between rides and ever since then it won't start. Every time I go to start the bike I would hear a click (probably from the relay). But i checked the battery first to be sure and its fine, I have my own charger + I took the battery to get tested, and the shop said the same thing. So on to the next step; replace the relay. $90 dollars later, a new relay + fully charged battery... and still nothing but this time there wasn't even a click or any sound at all... can someone please help me?!
  15. I have a 2012 yfz 450 and when I go to start it the solenoid just clicks after I've just charged the battery. So 5 minutes later I tried putting it back on the charger and it started right up while on the charger, then I took it off the charger and it cranked slow once then went back to clicking. It's a brand new battery and I tested it with a multimeter and it reads 12 volts so I don't know what's going on. PLEASE HELP!
  16. Alright so I just rebuilt my 2012 kx250f complete rebuild. I put the motor back in the bike get everything hooked up and ready to go it takes a few kicks at first (obviously) but after it starts it sat and idled just fine for a while then it stalled out. Tried to start it again wouldn't start I took the spark plug out of it it looked good I was dark and wet. I cleaned it then put the spark plug back in it it took a few kicks but started right back up again then after a while it stalled out again and now I can't get it to start again!? Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you guys and girls for reading and hopefully for the help!!!
  17. Hi I just bought a 96 rm250 and it takes forever to get to start I have to kick it like 20 times . runs fine idles fine but has a weird screw end plug br7es never seen one on a dirt bike usual round top style any help would be appreciated
  18. I have a kx 250 1989 I've tried and done evrything to it to get it to start I'm at a loss nothing has worked it has spark a clean carb fresh fuel good compression still nothing any feed back would help thank you
  19. Hello thumpertalk please help! I have a 2016 fc450 with about 80 hours that wont start now, just turns over with the button after a little fall where the bike was dropped.. I was riding some tight trails and managed to drop the bike on the right side, i managed to make the throttle stick and not return back, also pulled 1 of the 2 wires out of my mapping switch.. I picked the bike up and still rode home, a week later i started it and went for a ride up the driveway and back.. the bike died.. it then started 1 more time but when i gave it some throttle it bogged out and died. I noticed the 2nd wire from the mapping switch has now been pulled out and is loose, could this be the reason the bike wont start?? Please help guys im not sure what to do now and i am scared i have done some major engine damage
  20. 1999 yz125 brand new top and bottom end gets fuel and spark has great compression just can’t seem to get it to start kicks over and try’s to but won’t run. Thinking it wasn’t getting enough fuel I bought a carb kit offline and still doing the same thing not a wiring or Cdi issue I’ve already done the ohm tests according to the manual and it all checks out. Getting into the summer my friends are starting to ride and I just want to get out there. Please help!!
  21. My 2018 YZ250X cold start choke on, one or two kicks starts always..today 10 kicks won't start, turn off choke tiny bit of throttle...negative...smell gas...pull plug, very wet, put in new plug 10 kicks nothing, pull plug kick over several times with plug out, replace plug, won't start but did sound on one kick like it almost wanted to...kept kicking choke on and off no throttle....nothing....decide to pop start...IT STARTS!! But feels funny and almost trying to die....give it throttle and it takes right off ...bang through the gears in power band come to a stop...dies, won't start...(Side note not sure if relevant), had it idling at one point barely then it wouldn't idle, turn idle screw a little to idle it up idles fine. After a few more rides had to turn screw again to get it to idle. EDIT:UPDATE: I always get a little spooge after riding coming from the PV hose...this is more than usual especially since it only ran for about a minute, the spooge has a gray tint....uh oh???
  22. I have a 07 ttr230 that is really hard to start. Once i get the bike started it will start back up easy if i need it to. It takes roughly 10-15 minutes worth of trying to get it to finally start. Air seems good and spark plug has spark, so where to now? Also it has a issue where whether you have the engine hot or cold, if you close the choke (push it in), the bike will die. I tried searching the forums but i couldnt a similar problem quite like mine. Any help is appreciated, Please and Thank you!
  23. Hi guys i need some helps ? I'm like a 5th owner of this bike, bought it on 2016, KTM Exc '97 250. The major problems at the bike is it is using a different magnetic coil with modified based (welded weirdly), if im not mistaken that part is Suzuki RGV250' s coil. Always fouling plugs, with tiny fire sparkle (or no at all) ,complete wiring not working, in fact i wasted 1 & 1/2 years left the bike at local workshop and they cant do nothing except keep repeating "we are trying to scouts those parts" . What should i do? I'm within budget so a cheap solution might ease me. I miss so much for riding my motorcycle ? P/s: forgive me for bad English, hope you'll understand. Brappp, MALAYSIA.
  24. Hey guys, Ive got a recently aquired 98yz125 that was fouling plugs during idle but seemed to be running too lean at more than 1/2 throttle. I pulled the carb apart to make sure jets were clean, they looked clear so I blew through them with an air compressor, put everything back together and the bike will no longer start. The only thing that changed to my knowledge is I backed the idle screw way out before starting it to set the air screw properly. The bike has a clean air filter, a top end with only a couple of hours on it and fresh gas. I assumed it was flooded, drained the bowl and turned the bike upside down with no spark plug to clear everything out. The air screw is 2 and a 1/4 turns out. Im reusing plugs that were previously fouled but are now dry and seem to be sparking okay. I tried to bump start and it seemed to start super weak for a second before dying. I had the throttle cable out of the slide and everything seems to be back together fine after a double check but I noticed there is no free play in the throttle cable even with the adjuster nuts all the way in. Not sure if that is indicative of the throttle being stuck open somehow. Every plug I pull out is wet. Sorry for the info overload but Im pretty puzzled at this point! ?
