Hey guys, I was starting in on the 1985 XR200R bottom case today. The splines on the shifter look pretty worn but the shifter I took off was nice and tight. If I get a new shifter, which I plan on doing, do you think I will have any problems? Also, what size shifter is that? 10mm or 13mm? Here is a picture of the shaft. If its toast, any suggestions for a replacement? I know how hard finding parts for that RFVC engine is. I guess I'm wondering if anyone knows of another bikes shaft that will fit. I pretty much have everything for the bike and engine now so I don't want this to stop the build cold. Heck at worst I think I could pack it (the shifter) with JB Weld to fill in the splines. The new shifter would be aluminum and the shaft is steel, so the JB Weld would only stick to one or the other. I should still be able to get it off I'm thinking.

I have a carburetor that I bought off of ebay that looks to be a 1999. I will be trying to register the bike in California, so it probably should have a California carburetor. The California carb is indicated by the model number on the carb. This carb has PD cast in the body, and the number stamped below it is 97ACPK. Can someone with a legit California bike tell be if that is what their number is like? I think the other 49 states may be different with respect to the A and/or C. I suspect that AC may mean California, and A means the other states. It's also possible that California has a B instead of the A. It looks like these labels apply to 1998 through 2002 models. Also, If someone has a manual for these years, that information may be in the manual. Thank you, Toby

I've tried for days to get this bike to achieve a stable idle. Even after a 5 minute warm-up it will only idle with the choke on. With choke off, it will die right away unless I keep tweaking the throttle. The closest I've gotten requires the idle screw to be turned almost all of the way in. I have tried various Pilot screw combinations from 2 turns out to about 3.5 turns out. In general I think it is running way to rich. I put an exhaust gas analyzer on it and the air to fuel ratio is around 11. When running around the neighborhood, I get significant back fires when I go off-throttle which would indicate an over rich situation. I got this bike from a remote family member and maybe they only rode it at low altitude. I'm just outside of Denver Colorado at about 5500 ft. I've avoided removing the carburetor to check the number on the main jet (stock is 138). Perhaps I need to go to a 132 or so. Is there any other suggestions or diagnostics I can do to troubleshoot? Was thinking of removing the air cleaner temporarily to see what a slightly leaner mixture would do. I did have the carburetor off the bike at one point when I was painting the frame and stuff. It looked remarkably clean. And I tried checking the timing but just got a face full of oil spray. Could never see the timing mark. I'm pretty frustrated. BTW it is a 1983 model with the Keihin PD28A carb.

Hello Folks I am looking for some help with some carb issues I am having with my basket case 2002 XR200R. This past summer I purchased the bike cheap. It had transmission issues and had been sitting outside for 4 or 5 years. As it turned out it had a broken countershaft. So after finding a countershaft on Ebay I began putting it all back together with a good carb cleaning as per Chucks guidelines (thx Chuck) . Upon completion I was able to get it fired up and running pretty well. It was a little difficult to start but once started it idled and ran beautifully . I probably put on 60 miles over a couple of rides with no issues. Yesterday I was out at the cabin to close up for the winter . I put stabilizer in the bike and was going to take it for a ride to get the stabilizer through the fuel system. I could not for the life of me get the bike to fire up. I checked for spark and fuel in the bowl and both were good. The plug was pretty black like it had been a little rich but the spark seemed good.It was cool out (5 degrees C) and I tried all choke setting to no avail. After about 40 kicks I tried a shot of carb cleaner through the spark plug hole. It fired up on the second kick and idled beautifully. Here is was really has me baffled as I was warming it up I was playing with the choke and it had no effect on how the bike idled. It idled perfectly at all choke settings from full on to full off. I took it for a short ride and when I returned I shut it off and then restarted it. It took a couple kicks but started ok (not great). I repeated this a couple times with the same result. To Summarize 1 Poor starting near impossible when cold out. 2 Idles perfectly and runs well once started. 3 Choke has NO effect at idle. 4 Spark seems good but shows to be a little rich. 5 Carb settings at or near factory specs. Any insight is much appreciated . ext-7

Hi all I have recently started a rebuild on a 1983 Honda XR200R. It is my first rebuild so I am learning as I go. My question is about the clutch cover/right crankcase cover. Please see the photo. Right next to the kickstart there is damage and I am not sure of the purpose of the damaged area nor what it is supposed to look like. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hey guys, I just picked up a 1997 XR200 for $200 (Canadian $). it needs some work and I am new to the bike. I ordered a service manual. I was told it needs a kick start idle gear, some work on the wiring harness, front and rear brakes are not working and it needs some clamps to get the exhaust back on. the stator cover and clutch cover were JB welded in places so will likely replace those. Carb was done over, top end was done over. Rubber is good front and back, shocks are good. frame was just painted and the plastics are good. Do you guys think this was a good deal and am i in for a lot of work? I plan on taking my time with it and getting it ready for next summer. Just looking for some input as this is my first dirt bike, I've always drove quads. I have a spare engine out of a 2002 xr200 to use for parts thats already all broken down. Any suggestions though would be great! Thank you!
