  1. So a topic that comes up often (in person usually, and lately due to November elections, lol) is the highly debated, "what bike, if you could have any, would be "THEE BIKE" you would choose to ride off into the sunset, after a (insert huge apocalyptic event/cause)? Lets separate them by your top choice based on 4 stroke or 2 stroke, since many people have an idea of at least 1 option from each type. Give the basic descriptions of why. My choice right now would be: 4 stroke: Either the XR400 or XR650*L*, (with updated suspension). Since its air cooled, less to go wrong (over heat), a motor that even though its 4 stroke is DIRT RELIABLE and low maintenance plus passenger ability. Has lighting thats simple and a kick start. 2 stroke: I'd love to use my 06 YZ250, but the lighting (lack there of) would have to be sorted first! Otherwise, a motor that will outlast the SUN, super light weight, kick start (batteries dont last) and great suspension from the factory.
  2. I swear I just said no. But this 2001 300 exc followed me home. As I get older (approaching mid 50's) my beloved Xr400 seems to be getting heavier. The only plausible solution was to buy the Xr400 of 2 strokes! I've been thru the faq but still have lots to learn about the new bike. If anyone would like to point me to some good threads or other online resources like the shop manual that would be great. If you have had a similar experience I would like to hear about it.
  3. Hello TT, I've been looking into buying a new bike for trail riding for some time now, and I've narrowed it down to the three bikes in the title. Anyways, I just need to ask some questions and get some opinions on which bike would be best (if there is a "right" answer). So first off, I'm 6'2" and 140 lb. I get that I'm very light for my height; I've already been told countless times. Here are some of the dilemmas I've been running into. I want a bike that is reliable and low maintnence which seems to put the YZ out of the picture just from what I've heard people say, but what is maintence really like on that bike? Personally, I like doing engine work, but I don't exactly have alot of money to spend keeping a bike maintained. Like I said, I'm only going to be riding trails, so it won't be ridden as hard as if it were being raced. I've already researched making a trail bike out of the YZ, so I have a pretty good understanding of using a FWW and redoing the suspension. As for the XR400, I've heard nothing but good things about it in regards to power and reliability. One thing that does concern me is the weight. I'm pretty strong for my weight and the trails I'm going to be riding are not at all like woods trails. There are no tight places where I'd need to wrestle the bike around, which makes me wonder if weight should really be as big of a concern. As for the KDX, it seems like a happy medium. It's a two-stroke (which I like the idea of) with all the qualities of a four-stroke that I like. It also seems to put out good power, but how does this power compare to that of the XR? I've heard that these KDXs are very low maintnence as well. I'm obviously not strictly going for huge amounts of power, but I want enough for it to be a decent thrill, have fast acceleration, and have good torque for some hill climbs. Like I said, any opinions and answers to my questions are welcome. Thanks -mkiuk
  4. Hey y'all, so I got an xr 400 96 with an Xrs only mikuni pumper carb. I live at an elevation of 167ft (51m) . Which type of jetting would y'all prefer for my elevation? also has a wiseco 416 big bore kit.
  5. Hey y'all , so yesterday when I went to warm up my bike I noticed that the Vapor trail tech speedo was finky every time that the wire that was connected from the horn/signals/lights to the other wires moved a bit. So I checked the the butt connectors and one of them looked burnt. So I replaced it. After that everything was good untill I hit the horn then the whole electrical system went out expect for the kill switch because bike still runs and dies when I hit the kill switch. I went to go look at the fuse 15A but couldn't tell if it was blown or not so I took it out and cleaned it. It looked fine so I went to go plug it back in but it sparked and blew immediately when it goes in. Could this be a short? Did I make any mistakes?
  6. Hello all. This is my first post. Been using this site for answers since i was a kid. Want to relive my teens. Going to prob pick up a 01 xr400 needs top end. For $1800 Want to go with 416 wisco. Am curious what may be a good start for jetting stock carb. Riding around sea level. Any answers would be much appreciated
  7. New guy to dirt riding and here. I purchased a 2001 Honda XR400 That had a Baja designs kit and is street legal. Perfect for getting me to trails 9 miles away. However, I don't understand a few things: 1 the headlight is dim, like really dim when accelerating, actually brighter when clutch is pulled in. Why? 2 the turn signals never get bright enough to be effective. They have about 7 little LEDs in a line and only 3 or so ever light up 🤔 3 there is a switch on the side of the front fairing that I would think turns the whole light kit off, wires coming to it from main system as far as I can tell without removing the whole thing, but it does nothing... 🤷‍♂️ 4 the headlight has 3 settings, H = high beams, P=parking or low beams and then the last setting is a filled in circle. When I switch back to that full circle - it cuts the engine.... Is that supposed to happen? I would think it would just turn off the head light, like for long trail rides when not needed. I'm assuming something is not wired up correctly and I'm not much of a wrench. I'm willing to learn, but videos out there seem lacking. Can anyone help with diagnostics? I have pics and link to a video.
  8. Does anyone know if the twin headlights or the metal baja tanks from the Japanese street legal models like the MD22 and MD30 (XLR250’s, I think) will fit on an American model XR400R? If not, are there any known ways of fitting them. Both the lights and tanks are available from Japanese auctions and i think they’d look nice on a my 400R 👍
  9. Hello everyone. I recently just purchased a 2001 xr 400 and did my first oil change and the basic maintenance so far but it just start making this weird rattling sound like a peice of metal is bouncing around. The sound starts when the bikes cold or warm and I havent heard it become louder while riding harder. I've come to think it's either the cam chain tensioner or something in the bottom end. Any suggestions would be great appreciated. https://youtu.be/KFzBG8hrwbA
  10. Hi guys, I bought a pumper carb from XR’s Only a while back and never got it to run better than my stock Keihin carb. Always popping on deceleration... changed pilots and main jets. Settled at a 20P with 1.5 turns out on the mixture screw to run and idle best but the thing still pops with deceleration. Put stock carb back on and no popping on deceleration and seems to run better, but no AP to address the bog off idle ( hence I was hoping the TM 40 would fix that and be the best of all worlds). So when checking the float level per manual in the TM 40, I am confused and feel dumb. Where is the level on the float checked from? What side? Pivot or end? Manual shows the float and carb body to be parallel. Any adjustment makes it not parallel. When I checked, it seems the setting was 17mm (within spec) from the end of the float. I tried to adjust to 19mm but the measurement is different depending where you take the measurements as the float is not parallel. So I don’t know if I’m doing it right or messing it up.
  11. I have a 96 xr400, that is as far as I know stock. I just bought a white brothers e series exhaust and am trying to,find out if I need to reset the carb. Some threads say yes some say no. I am in louisville ky. and like to ride woods trail, no track riding. Can anyone tell me if I need to mess with the jets or leave them alone!!? Any help appreciated.
  12. Hi, so i have just bought an 03 XR400 and I have just been getting it looking nice tidy and running well, I decided to have a check at the valve clearances. They were all a tad off so i adjusted back to spec, this was when i found that the right exhaust has litterally NO play. And when I mean no play i mean the adjustment pin was taken all the way out and it still had NO PLAY 🤨. It might be worth mentioning that this valve is the one that the decompression lever is hooked up to, but does that mean there should be no movement? I talked to a mate and he said that its fine but i just dont know. The specs for the exhaust valves are 0.12mm. The adjustment pin is now back in roughly the position i remember it lol, and when the engine starts it has a ticking noise. is someone able to help me out here? Is there something im missing? Has this happened to anyone else? What must i be doing wrong? Cheers.
  13. Hey guys, I’ve been looking at getting an XR250R or XR400 but not finding anything local, so my question is am I mad for thinking about buying an XR600R that is local to where I live, I want to ride both on and off road in equal measure so from what I have read it kinda makes sense but it’s a 1994 model with 13000 miles on it. It’s a little un cared for but the current owner has replaced the wheel and steering head bearings and says he has replaced the oil every 2000km. Is this worth a gamble for £2000? Are there still parts available for these bikes if the worst happens?. Should I just stick to my original plan and just wait for a 250/400?

  15. New to site! Have read alot as of late! Thanks for all the good info thus far. Recently a friend of mine gave me his xr4. It was in horrible shape. Been sitting for 10yrs. I have bought new everything, rebuilt forks shock, rotors, sprockets, etc....everything, trust me. I have taken the carb apart, soaked, sprayed, blown it out twice now. It has 160 and 60 jets, needle clip is in 3rd groove. And yes, pilot and main are spotless clean. I have done all Gordon mods. I have bought a carb rebuild kit, installed, diaphragm is in good shape. The bike starts and idles fine. When I give it any throttle it wants to die. It pops on the way up. It will however run well on choke prior to achiving opperating temp. I have mixture screw set at 2 1/2 out. Nothing changes when I turn mixture screw in and out. I am in Texas at 500ft. My question is can a carb be so dirty that I cannot clean the internal passages enough to make work? The carb when i opened it up in the begining was the wost i have ever seen one varnished over. Should I just buy the Minkuni pumper and call it a day. This will be my "buddy" bike so I'm not worried about any added performance from the Minkuni. I do however want it to be a first start kicker. And no, I don't want to have to spend $400 on the pumper, but I will. If the pumper carb is the best alternative, where can I get one other than xrs only? Ive read some bad things about customer service and people not receiving ordered parts! They seemed less that inthused to talk to me. Takes 3 weeks to get one to me. Please advise!
